Hey guys,
Have you wondered what the name of the first chapter meant?

To you in 2000 years...

Some of you might have theories, and I would be curious to hear them.

---

Also, in that first chapter, the first time we see Eren, he's been crying for no apparent reason, and somehow this seem important...

I doubt Isayama would draw this for no reason...
I feel like this is a hint he put there, but that we might not have understood yet...

Any ideas?

To be honest I don't really buy the time travel theories. I think the crying is significant though. Overall the manga has at times given us random flashbacks and whatnot. What if what we are seeing now are basically memories? So the real eren was going through some hard shit and then he started seeing flasbacks of his past. The crying was simply because before his flashback started he was crying.

I would agree that the time-travel theory is a little bit too much.

From how i see it, the easiest explanation for that chapter's name would be the following:
It's a message to the future generations of humans in that world. If you think about it, in the current story, all books about the world outside the walls were banned, peope have no idea about anything except their three walls (or at least they think they know, since there's also a wall-cult which knows much more). No history books, no nothing.
So if you look at it from that point of view, interpreting the chapter's name as the beginning of a big important story which every human should know so that the same mistakes would not be made again and humanity wouldn't be at the brink of extinction again - it makes sence.

As for Eren crying, again, the simpliest explanation would be that Eren had a dream about the future, like clairvoyance, a premonition about something terrible that is about to happen.

I'm still thinking this relates Ragnarok.

The End of the World, the destruction of the Gods and Humanity only for the world and Gods to be reborn.

We already have Midgard, we have Half Titans, we have Odin,Bragi,Freyja,Ullr,Ymir, Wallists believing the Walls are from the Gods.

"To you in 2000 years..."

The most logical explanation: the world of Titans is set 2000 years in future.
Mankind probably created Titans as either:
-genetic experiment gone wrong.
-super-soldier program gone wrong.

From what we know Titans first started killing people who fled across the ocean and build the walls to protect themselves. From various names of characters I would assume that they are in central Europe/eastern Europe area and the land where Titans originated is probably the former USA.

But this is all speculation so far, we still have to learn what is Titan real objective and why Reiner and others started that onslaught 5 years ago when they could keep humans living inside in peace for the rest of eternity?

Eren cries a second time when he sleeps, and he has a flashback of his dad injecting him with a serum.

He seems to have a history of those.

But I don't think the world of AoT is set in our world. Like, I don't think it takes place 2000 years from now.

I bet it will make sense at the end of the story though, and it will be like dangling a carrot in front of a horse.

It is a riddle!

Maybe Isayama is foreshadiwing what will happen in real life? The world being set 2000 years in the future, and 'you' being the reader. Maybe the reason humans were once able to blow titan's heads off was because they had super-modern technology and not because they had more canons?

Guize, I think we are onto something...

Because of technology?
Take note that if we encounter an enemy like that and having trouble to defeat it the technology degradation is assured for generations that survive, especially after that long time.

Just to point out that official translation of the title of the first chapter by Kodansha is "To You, 2,000 Years From Now" in the table of contents, and "To You, 2,000 Years Later" in the page where the chapter title is placed.

Anyway, I actually think "time" will play a role. Not actual "time-travelling," but similar to, if anyone watched this, Avatar: The Last Airbender. We already have a hint that it happened to Ymir. Stuck in Titan form for 60 years but it seemed like she never aged until she got out from it. Similar with the Titan inside the wall. It's been there for god knows how long(Since the walls had already been there even before humans came, if we were to trust the covers).

Now, think of Annie's Crystallization. I'm actually thinking that Annie herself will probably not play a role much in the future chapters but rather, her crystallization would play the big one. What if the crystal works like a Titan form? It's a life preserver plus you never age inside it? Eren had once thought if Annie can do this stuff(e.g. Skin Hardening), then he should be able to do the same too(refer to Chapter 37 page 16). Do you think it's a foreshadowing?

Say, there's really no future for humanity within the walls in their current situation, so what can they have do but send their hope to the future through a life preserver of some sort? In other words, Eren will be crystallized and stay in it for at least 2000 years.

So what do you guys think?

I think its far off. XDDD. But just giving out my thoughts.

Not really familiar with Norse Mytholgy, but we already had those? As far as I could remember, we only have Half Titans, Ymir and Utgard.

Maybe it has something to do with the comments in the last couple of pages so to speak.
http://www.mangareader.net/shingeki-no-kyojin/1/56

Perhaps the case the author is making is history repeating itself? Some authors tend to make such cases in their stories. The story has at points also made the claim that humanity is incapable of working together and continue the infighting. So basically when the story says "to you in 2000 years" its meant to follow up on the points made in the first chapter and later on. remember the mistakes of the past, do not get complacent and such.... Then again the first chapter is extremely suggestive. That eren remembers mikasa with shorter hair could be related to the fact that nowadays mikasa carries shorter hair than back then.

Well, not the main reason. Our planet has 7 billion people, and if this happened 2000 years from now, one would expect to find all kinds of remnants of our civilization within the walls (which I calculated to have an area at least twice as big as Germany). You would have tons of archaeological ruins everywhere. Look at the Roman ruins many from 1500-2300 years ago spread from England to Iraq. Their roads are still in use. The decay of our civilized world would be everywhere. Which it is not in the series. It is simply a lot easier to explain the setting of this series as not a future of our world, but it's own world similar to our 18th century (except the whole 3D Gear thing, though we should try that IRL, cause that'd be wicked, and maybe deadly).

Not saying to bash, but it is just too cumbersome and hard to find reasons for why the setting is as it is if it were 2000 from us now rather than just having it be it's own world.

Also, just a note. Technological degradation would only happen if all the countries with modern technology were destroyed. And since the Titans appeared 107 years before the story, that leaves 1893 years of no progress built on our own? That just wouldn't happen.

basically Occam's razor here. The easiest solution is most likely the true one.

Hahah, interesting.

What if the whole civilization gets frozen in time for the future. And the manga is for those living in the future to understand how they got there. Perhaps they would have memory loss? (We know you don't remember anything during your time as a titan, so who knows, maybe your memories get wiped out in that crystal). Maybe, in the end, Eren or some other titan decides to cover the whole population of the walls (and perhaps the communities beyond) because of the imminent dangers that will be solved as 2000 years pass? Perhaps titans have a certain lifespan from their point of creation... Who knows?

You have a very good point there.
It's a long shot but the reason why there are no remnants of this is probably:
-they selected an area with little major cities and ruined them ( I am talking about wall cult, there is something very suspicious about those guys ).
-titans leveled them up, one by one ( since as you said they appeared 1893 years they had lot of time to destroy every major city on Earth )
-Cities just fall to the test of time ( modern building are not as tough and standing as our ancient age houses are, look at Pripyat. It is abandoned from 1986 and half of city is already gone due to wildlife taking over, give it 200 or 300 more years and there will be no more city at all ).
And to be fair we didn't see anything outside the main walls so who know what is out there in the world ( after all Reiner mentioned some kind of Titan city, a place where they will return after all that is over ), maybe the world itself is full of ruined megacities. We will know more one day when manga get's to it, so far it's just speculations...

Not saying to bash, but it is just too cumbersome and hard to find reasons for why the setting is as it is if it were 2000 from us now rather than just having it be it's own world.
It's ok, I love good arguments myself when they are civil of course. I don't know why just 2000 years, that gives us nothing at all. I use it for the future because that is the only logical assumption I could get. For everything else it is pointless to number a year, especially for world other than our Terra.

Also, just a note. Technological degradation would only happen if all the countries with modern technology were destroyed. And since the Titans appeared 107 years before the story, that leaves 1893 years of no progress built on our own? That just wouldn't happen.
Titans appeared 107 years at the walls, who knows how long they terrorized humans before that ( we have 7 continents so they would need at least several centuries to cover everything up, maybe even more ). In addition to that technological degradation begins when people stop remembering how machines they build work and as a result lose all knowledge about it and eventually the machine itself. Good example for this is Metro 2033 and Warhammer 40.000. ( especially Metro 2033 where only two decades after nuclear holocaust people forgotten how to build the most essential things. It's like that chick from Metro 2034 said "Now we are the last to know how this train works, our grandchildren will probably think that gods made this." ).
Titans probably terrorized humans a LOT more than 107 years, and because mankind found nothing to stop them they just concentrated to survive losing many experts and as a result all advanced technology in a span of several centuries.

But this is also just a theory, I could be wrong for all I know. We shall see in the future releases :)
For now your 'other earth' theory sounds more logical than mine to be honest :D

One more question: is this reliable information?

Wikipedia said:
One hundred years prior to the beginning of the story, giant humanoid creatures called Titans have forced humanity to devolve to a medieval level of technology and to retreat into a system of concentric Walls known as Wall Maria, Wall Rosé and Wall Sina. Inside these walls, humanity lived in peace for one hundred years, but in the beginning of the story, a sudden attack by a gigantic sixty-meter Titan and a smaller Titan covered in armor plates causes the outermost wall to be breached, forcing mankind to abandon the land between Wall Maria and Wall Rosé, which leads to famine and turmoil.

@Brother Coa
Not sure if Wikipedia is right. I mean, pretty much anyone can edit Wikipedia. We don't really have an idea what kind of technology they used before. The manga just basically said that they had enough fire power to blow the titans' heads off. For all we know, the technology they used before were probably just stronger versions of their current weapons. They don't have pictures or descriptions that support futuristic technology either.

Though I may have missed it. XD

I was always under the impression it was canon there was a slight regression in tech, but the only kind of thing they imply in the manga is that they had some more effective weapons (cannons and such) in the past. Obviously those weren't good enough, for some reason or another...

Anyway my view on this topic essentially lies along Beatrice's line of thinking about Ragnarok. :p

Also, I don't have a problem with a time loop/repeat scenario. Seems as plausible as other scenarios to me, if not more so.

No info, about the world setting and the technology of the past, can be added by SnK Chapter 0 where Isayama revealed about the Cult that want to exterminate humanity and so on?

You can't really consider Chapter 0 as canon material. Pilot chapters are used to pitch to manga publishing companies to see if your work is worth investing in. Though it does provide insight on what the manga has in store for us in the future.

where can I read this chapter 0?

Also, ragnarok seems likely with all this nordic mythos added into the series.

Also to Brother Coa: I'm fairly certain that teh Titans only showed up 107 years ago and terrorized the old continent, and the walls are on the 'new continent" (hidden map information). One thing that I question is that how long can steel and metal hold up over time. Rock and cement hold up, but metal rusts, and we don't have the data of how big steel structures like modern Mega cities fair over 2000 years. But, the people before used cannons to try and defeat the Titans.

It could be an alternative history, but I don't think this whole subject will be explained in the manga unless someone asks Isayama himself.

What is difficult for me, is not the theories we come up with, but how those would be explained in a way that is consistent with the series thus far. Like, the story could very well be 2000 from our world today, but how would the story wrap that up in a harmonious cohesive thing? That is what worries me. i think we might not get a good or satisfying response on this to be honest.

Although, here is a thought. To examine the other Chapter Title names and see how they aid in the exposition of the content. Like the Titles: battle of Trost Part X, or whatever. I know in other series like One Piece, a chapter title may not have anything to do directly with what is happening. Examine to see how much worth we should hold on an opening chapter title name.

Well, in this series the titles I remember tend to describe or relate to their respective chapters. Chapter 48's was "somebody" (dareka), which directly highlights Bertolt's emotional plea. Maybe we should comb through and see if that's the case for all of them...
