So as we all know one of the recurring topics on Hunter x Hunter is the genders of some characters and the usual speculation using evidence like body proportions, pronouns and bios to prove once and for all if said character is male or female.
Examples we had like Kurapika who is pretty much confirmed as male (depending on which version you're basing at), Senritsu who confirmed verbally that she's female, and Kalluto who's bio in the 2004 data book said that he's a "kimono-wearing boy".
But we also had unconfirmed accounts like Pitou in which fans are split on wither it's male or female, so is Alluka and pretty much Ant Kite as well and the talk just never ends.
But then it hit me... does it really matter knowing what gender these ambiguously gendered characters are? How will it affect the plot anyhow? It's not a romantic love story and nothing has said anything on homosexuals or any of that. So why are we wasting our time figuring out beyond knowing how we refer to them?
Or how about a better question: Why does Togashi keep doing so?
The way I personally see it, this all feels like Togashi's way of saying "Don't look at gender, look at the characters themselves and what they do." Togashi is basically saying it doesn't matter if a character is man or a woman. If it's good when it's good and if it's bad when it's bad.
And it's also a way to run about the cliched "Hero Male with Useless female". Togashi gave us some good female characters who look weak but turn out to be quite powerful and in contrast made some lame @$$ed males despite their powerful hype and it's usually the opposite in a generic shonen series where they make females basically the cheerleaders or not as useful as male characters. And also gave us characters that are considered strong and powerful without really deciding what gender they are. Should we care if Pitou was male or female? It was wonderful character to the already wonderful library of characters here. Same with Alluka now. Boy? Girl? It doesn't matter. This thing can EFF you up if you're not careful with it.
While it is fun to speculate till we get solid confirmation, I don't think it should be our no. 1 priority. Unless you just want to make sure on what you project your sexual desires at but that's a Pandora Box I don't want to touch upon and neither should you.........
