Nevermind that it also went against the theme of the series in a blatant way.
Hahaha

I still can't get over how Naruto ending just proved the villains right

Neji: Your destiny is decided on birth, and hard work is not going to change that

Turns out Naruto had super parents, and was the reincarnation of some god

Pain: I will bring world peace by releasing the Juubi

The five villages live in peace because of what happened during the war

Madara: It's better to live in the matrix instead of accepting reality

What about accepting that Sasuke was a criminal?

I guess you don't have to accept reality if you can use your position of Kage to let someone walk free

If Oda was truly a great mangaka, then the first few arcs of OP would have been praised as much as the arcs starting from Alabasta.

He was still just inexperienced..why the hell would you come up with the name Kurahadol otherwise?

Some early work makes him not great? :|

what were the other series running in shounen at that time? That could play a role too

I think early One Piece has received a lot of praise when it was around. It has to have been a success in Japan, I mean it got animated pretty quickly.

Here in Germany, early One Piece was a huge success as well. And that early One Piece would just go up to the end of the Alabasta arc.

It is probably just the shadow of the 4kids version that is still hanging over that part of One Piece.

not an excuse, especially when Fishman Island has been criticized

Dunno, but a lot of diehard OP fans didn't like the first few arcs and even dropped the manga at one point.

Never heard of that to be honest. I think the arcs that get criticized more often are Skypea, Davy back fight, Thriller Bark, Fishman Island, Dressrosa and WCI, all for vastly different reasons.

In my experience, when I see people say they drop the series early on, it's usually because the art put them off. I've never seen them critique the actual story.

few staff here have said the story didn't pick up until Alabasta, which I disagreed with.

The art does hurt the series, but that's unfortunate because it suits OP perfectly.

I actually only know one real person that dropped One Piece despite a serious attempt at reading it and despite liking Manga in general, and he dropped it during Thriller Bark just like you said due to the art style not suiting his taste.

I think it is especially the whackyness that put some people off.

I don't think the art hurts the series at all, quite the opposite, it wouldn't be anywhere as successful with a more generic style.

Actually end of the day many Manga look exactly the same and their art is hardly memorable, despite good quality.

Having a mixed reception is better than having none, especially since it's in favor of One Piece anyways. I think most people love the art, and the Color Walks seem to sell well considering how many of them are there.

That's exactly what I just said... the art is perfect for what Oda was going with.

The M3 are the worst personality wise, designed characters.
Luffy is annoying. He preaches of friendship and Nakama yet doesn't think twice about putting them in danger to self-indulge in his adventure.

Zoro is just a stoic generic badass. Besides fighting , he's not need.

Sanji is the icing of the cake, a total cliché. He claims to be a gentelman and respecting women , but as soon as he gets a chance he will peek at Nami bathing.

All of your reasons can be thrown out by the fact that they are Pirates lol

Of course the series require some suspension of disbelief. At one moment everyone is talking about protecting their Nakama, next they are joking about how much of a suicide mission and certain death their adventure is.

ALso to be fair, none of them have left the crew, so they have no problem with Luffy putting them in danger. Zoro, Sanji, and Robin are almost always okay with it, and Luffy's lust for adventure works out for Zoro and Sanji too given their dreams/desires. Plus, they're willing to embrace death to achieve goals like saving Alabasta.

I think the first time there was a real 'Wtf are you getting us into' from the weakling trio was at Thriller Bark.

Sanji definitely is a perv though :D
