this mostly happens if the file is damaged or your pc cant deal with 1080p(if you are watching hd movies)

the frame skipping is due to hd mkv container files, they will eat your entire cpu if your having trouble with that i suggest using a different media player such as media player classic. it handles these files with no problems and no video skipping

I use VLC player if i download any videos.
I dont do it that often but maybe a video per week when im too lazy to wait for sum1 to upload it.
Once i watched a new anime and i wanted to read the translation for the opening so i had to scroll it forward and back and then it kinda froze.
But mostly its okay.

Personally, I've never experienced any real problems with VLC but I'm only using it for movies which I download. If I enter a dvd I use DivX Plus.

I tried Vlc but it's horrid user interface (my opinion ^^) never appealed to me. I use other available ones which are more easier on the eyes. The plus of Vlc that I give credit for is that it can play most files without needing codec packs. (correct me if wrong)

My laptop is kinda slowish so using a video player that needs codecs is a pain and makes the video all slugish. I've been using VLC for years now and I've never had any problems with it, sometimes I mess up certain things but that's me. I'd personally recommend it, if not use Media Player Classic with the CCC codec pack.

iirc, vlc is also requiring less memory usage than WMP. VLC, playing a HD episode of HIMYM takes up ~60mb memory usage. That's pretty impressive for bringing superb quality. :-)
