Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

As much as I hate anime butchering manga, isn't that the fault of the mangaka? All they have to do is insist that the studio respect the material or they can't animate it. Don't just give it to the first studio that asks. Didn't Mashima do the same with FT? Rave was cut short so he was bitter. That's why FT took so long to get one. And that despite its flaws, it remains true to the source material.
I think the publisher has the right to choose which studio to do animation, not mangaka.
This pretty much. The mangakas have very little or no control over the animated version of their works. Or I should say the ones who aren't noted successes don't. Their involvement starts with their name on the opening and ends there too. A few might interject and insist on certain voice actors, and some companies might ask them how certain scenes should be done, but these are exceptions more than the norm. When the anime --and subsequently the manga get really popular, then you might see involvement that actually matters. Otherwise? They're basically fans of the anime too.

Or you could go the Inoue Takehiko route and start your own anime studio for all your anime adaptations, then barely actually produce anything.

I guess that explains why Vagabond / Real don't have adaptation (I think it'd be difficult for an anime to do the manga justice though). I'd see Real as better done in drama I think.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

I can't wait to see the top 5 best selling manga for the first half of this year, i know One Piece is gonna be first in the end of the year but in the first half i doubt it that cause One Piece only has 1 volume while SnK has 2 volumes, Naruto and Kuroko will have 3 volumes so i think maybe OP is not gonna be first in the first half.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

02) 7,224,100,000 One Piece
03) 4,137,900,000 Kuroko no Basket

Sorry, I'm a little confused. Those at the top are in the billions? That can't be right. I'm sure I'm misinterpreting.

That's a ranking of sales revenue, not units. I would think those numbers are Japanese Yen. About 100 Yen = $1

Assuming this goes from Nov 12, 2012 to nov 2013 like the other lists, then with the release of Eva 3.0 and its great performance in theaters in jpn as well as its disc sales the movie (selling 398K bds, and 176K dvds, making it best selling anime dvd and bd in 2013) its high placement is much expected.

Comparing Gintama on the two charts is very interesting. It generated ¥1,186,000,000 on the manga only chart, but ¥3,252,000,000 on the total revenue chart. It's a good example of why tankobon sales do not represent an exact quantification of popularity.

I'm a bit surprised to see that the Index franchise is that popular, I wonder if sales for Railgun are included? Outside of that nothing too surprising, lots of good series in there.

The source says spin-offs are included. And yeah, RailDex is that popular. Index and Railgun are about equal, as far as popularity goes. Railgun should account for a high percentage of revenue in 2013, because of the success of Railgun S. Last year's Index movie did good box office, and was one of the highest selling home video releases of the year. Every year Index is consistently one of the best selling light novel series. The manga adaption even sells respectably. Taken as a whole, very few franchises are as popular. If a third season of the main story ever airs, Index probably would be listed even higher.

April 10th is an announcement for Index, and coincidentally, it marks the 10th anniversary for the novel. So there's a chance it's a third season announcement.

Seriously. It also supports that Gintama is a rare anomaly where the anime is actually more popular than the manga it adapts. If this isn't evidence that a new season is a 'when' more than an 'if' nothing will.
