Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

If post-anime drops happen it's not unheard of for them to happen immediately after the anime ends, that's how it happened to Reborn. :p

Magi had tons of momentum though. It was outselling Conan regularly and its last volume sold almost 600k before dropping out of top 50. Hopefully the bubble hasn't burst quite yet.

But first week sales didn't drop. It didn't do anything remotely of the sort. First week sales are the same as always.

Volume 17: 227,244 copies
Volume 18: 311,414 Copies
Volume 19: 218,893 Copies
Volume 20: 269,671
Volume 21: 238,886 Copies.

Let me see if understand this correctly: Because the anime ended less than three weeks ago, volume 21 sales have declined despite being only 30,000 copies lower than the previous volume, and higher than volume 17 and 19. Volume sales are declining despite selling within it's normal range, and enough to reach it's normal total sales average of about 550 - 600,000 copies. Basically Magi is in decline despite being exactly the same as always, outselling several recent volumes, and being on track to reach the exact same sales total it always reaches. Is that about right?

Magi had tons of momentum though. It was outselling Conan regularly and its last volume sold almost 600k before dropping out of top 50. Hopefully the bubble hasn't burst quite yet.
Detective Conan Volume 79: 296,934
Volume 80: 291,054
Volume 81: 318,642
Volume 82: 237,459
Volume 83: 266,073

Over the same period, first week sales of Conan and Magi are very similar. Conan actually has a slight edge. Conan #83 selling only 27,187 copies more than Magi #21 in their first week is completely meaningless. Total sales per volume of Magi are typically a little higher than Conan, but never much.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Well, I was talking about long-term sales, rather than week 1 sales. Starting its first week lower than Conan means it will most likely leave the chart lower than Conan, unless Conan's chart run is especially front loaded this time around. Assuming that's how things play out, that represents a change of pace for the series. Also, there is no need to be snide.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Since we all know that AOT will be the series with most total sales in the first half of 2014 (And OP volume 74 the most sold individual volume), I was interested in asking the sales experts here which series do you think will be no 2? Will it be OP? But Oda released only one volume in this period because of his breaks so I'm not sure if OP will be no 2 or lower?

If week one sales are the same as always, what would lead you to the conclusion that long term sales would decline? First week sales for volume 17 were lower than volume 23. Volume 17 was still Magi's top seller in 2013. How could you judge long term sales for volume 23, anyway, with only one week available? First week sales for Conan are frequently higher than Magi's, as the links provided in my last post demonstrate. It doesn't really mean anything. It has already been demonstrated that first week sales for Magi #23 are within the same range as previous volumes. Conan is not necessary as a measuring stick. As the top selling volumes of 2013 demonstrates, per volume sales of both series are very close, nearly identical. Magi outsells Conan, but not by very much. Magi's bestselling volume only sold 9,183 copies more than Conan's bestselling volume. The difference in sales is marginal. Conan ranking two places ahead of Magi holds no meaning. With Magi selling to average, the difference between first and third out of fifty, and a mere 27,187 copies, is of no significance.

Since they typically count from mid nov to mid may, its probably tough to say unless the jump manga releasing next week or so are known?

Last year (first half) had
1One Piece
2Magi
3Kurobas
4Attack on Titan

One Piece could be argued to be number 2, as its sales of its volume released in Nov 2013, would have had its sales split by the date they would end counting, so it could probably still get 4mln or so sales and be number 2. Kurobas or Magi most likely will remain in the top four.

Conan 82 and Magi 20 both released on the same day, and Magi beat it. In the exact same scenario, Magi should have beaten it again unless either it is dropping in popularity or Conan is rising, or if there is some promotion going on I'm not aware of.

I don't like to use those yearly lists to compare volume sales, because the date of release is too big a variable. I prefer to use weekly Oricon figures for this purpose. That said it is interesting that Conan ends up so close to Magi in the long run, it must hold really well even after falling off the chart.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

In the daily rankings site, Magi second week is clearly beating conan so the situation will reverse this week.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

I think its better to be selling more in the long run then to try to claim which one is selling the more copies over some short period of time. At the end of the day no one really cares which one sold fastest, but which one sold the most. The fastest selling manga of four weeks isnt really meaningful data.

The yearly charts don't really show which sold most either though (well, okay, One Piece and Titan :p), because the data is so heavily skewed towards earlier releases. Looking at weekly sales isn't a perfect system but everything is on more-or-less equal footing with it.

I'm happy to hear that, I didn't know there were daily rankings, sounds interesting, do you have a link? :)

What do you mean, they are comparing volume sales of two manga that released on the same day to make the claim that one is selling less than its volumes usually do. How would using the sales of these two volumes end of the year not be useful?

Finally you're back :) but the way that you always post the rankings is better than this.

Anyway, Holic Rei sales still surprise me, and go Haikyuu!

Well, it going to take time to write it in my own way, and someone else going to just copy and paste that one.

That means I don't have to write it in my way; unless people are willing to way until I can write it in my way.

Less Mahouka and Haikyuu!! than last week, though at least No Game No Life new volume is showing good life.

I assume only a few days were counted, regardless, Seraph of the End continuing to go strong, and visibly, Haikyuu!! adding another 100K this week.
