One Piece set the record for first week sales since Oricon started charting books in January 2008.

Well OP hits the Top again and break through it to reach heaven and shake gods hand, just to kick his ass with its sales record here. nearly 2mil this week..holy ***
well. I didnt expect much less from OP but the gap between it and Naruto is ernormous this time.....well a Hooray for Hokenshitsu to get into top 30. ^^
Bakuman only around the 250.000 hmm....it would kinda interest me how Death Note did sell back then. Does anyone have the rankings from back there?...

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

OP breaks record after record. No surprise there. Tough the peek should be reached by now because the war is over with this volume and the cool down phase starts with the flash back and all. Well I could be wrong and the volume with the Strawhat reunion might break another record.

I have compared the first week sales from the other manga with the previous volume sales:
Naruto 51 : 618,737
Bleach 45 : 465,713
Reborn 29: 269,353

It looks ALL big Jump Series rose significant.
Naruto by 228,000 copies
Bleach by 83,000 copies
Reborn by 61,000 copies

So it was a really good marketing move to use the insane popularity of One Piece to not only boost the OTHER One Piece books but also boost every other popular shonen series they have.
OR
The volumes could just have hit the market like one day sooner than usuall.

I think the previous volumes for naruto bleach and others only acounted 3 days of sales in the first week. That's why the sales rose significantly.

But I could be wrong.

I might be the only one, but I'm glad to see Kuroko breaking 100,000 in it's first week, and also beating Beelzebub. Looking forward to next month to see what kind of boost Mago will get from the anime (if any).

After 4 volumes Hokenshitsu finally sells enough to chart. Not on the level of the other 09 series that are left over but I think that it finally has started charting will help it out a bit. Not bad timing considering its one year anniversary is a few weeks away.

Kuroko beat Beelzebub in the first week in June and in overall sales in April and June as well. So its not the first time and it has been an interesting trend to watch.

You're right. And for Naruto is the same.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

i'm sorry, don't know where to ask... from other forum, somebody is claiming this:
"For 2009 Naruto sold 250 000 per volume in France alone. That's 6 volumes a year so 1.5 million Naruto volumes for the entire year.
80 000 for One Piece. Around 390 000 a year.
Fairy Tail is second behind Naruto with about 420 000 a year followed by Soul Eater which is about the same as One Piece.
"
and his source is:http://www.actualitte.com/actualite/...aruto-acbd.htm
i don't know french and i'm curious because if this true, manga sales outside japan is pretty big and not as small as people say.. and looks like France's market is bigger than america. and sorry for bad english.

Yes, its rather true <I'm not French, but I see what's going on in Poland for example>, not to mention the American market methinks. Those are fairly well balanced numbers you got there and I wouldn't think its not true <still, considering pl market :p>
And yes, its true, outside of Japan One Piece isn't so "good" as for example Naruto. From my experience it seems OP is more for otaku fans rather than "just" a&m fans <its one of those things why I think Naruto is better than OP, but nevermind me>: Naruto just makes better appeal to those who are .. how to say it.. more "americanized", more "natural", more.. no, less into anime and mnaga, they are less otaku fans.
So yes, to me the sales seems true not only in numbers, but in titles as well <pl market seems the same, but OP isn't even published because the market for that title is SO small as of right now, but Bleach did started being published because the market was way bigger than that> Mathematics it seems. No, money it seems - publisher won't publish the manga which will be sold in small quantities even if its sth like OP <and no, OP does have die hard OP fans, but like I said: they are rather otaku fans and there is still to few to fuel the market <but I read that OP is in the plans>.. xd>

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

France's market is, without question, bigger than America's. They have at least a dozen different publishers, and every series you can think of is licensed in French.

French is my second language (yay Canada), but I prefer to support the English market since it's in such a dire situation at the moment.

EDIT: I dug up some American sales figures, and the top selling Naruto volume here was Volume 28, with 100k copies. The top selling volume of 2009 was Volume 43, which sold 61k.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

For the french market, I think one piece is the seconde bestseller in France behind naruto, I read it in leparisien (very well-known newspaper), and this is the link : http://www.leparisien.fr/loisirs-et-spectacles/les-mangas-font-un-carton-18-07-2009-583954.php

for junior's opinion, I think one piece is very popular for people with experience in manga, and naruto is popular for the beginners (kids), it's just what I remarked in english, french, and arab forums

Ever since speed released One Piece sales really picked up. It's not as popular as Naruto but is at least on the same level as Bleach, if not more popular. It seems the issue was U.S. readers didn't like being 30 volumes behind. The bookstore I work at gets more copies of new OP volumes then Bleach now. That never happened before.

That, and that Naruto reaches a wider audience. From kids to adults. And Kishi is a genius at storytelling compared to the other Big 3 members (albeit having plotholes from time to time). Sure, Oda may have beat Kishi in bringing up the war & peace theme during Franky arc. But, Kishi took that to a whole new level. In fact, Kishi planned it from the start. Which I doubt Oda did. Anyways, regarding the deep theme of war & peace in both mangas. Kishi beats Oda at that one. Why?? 'cause Kishi bluntly asked the readers "do you think peace is possible??" This is where Kishi has the older audience's attention. Remember, it was said in Bakuman, JUMP's reader average are 17 year olds. The only thing that Oda beats Kishi in is grabbing the attention of the preteen to teen group. Kishi has dominance over the older teen to adult group. (Note: this is just my assumption, though)

In other words, because Kishi uses the deep theme of war & peace as its' central focus as of now, Kishi has managed to grab Kids & Adults' attention alike. Kishi choice of deep themes proves to be a hit with international readers compared to Oda.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

Not really, there was a poll by oricon to determine the most popular manga age 10-50, One Piece is number one in all age group.

OP is very popular outside Jump's main demographic in Japan, the fact that many adults watched the Strong World movie is a proof of this. One Piece is many many more times more phenomenal than Naruto in Japan, it's basically a cultural phenomenon almost in the level of Dragon Ball

Shunkan Heroism was ok. Not very interesting, but still a little enjoyable. The art was pretty good and the story and the characters was ok.

Still waiting for the two other one-shots from the Golden Future Cup, and also the one thats gonne be in next weeks Jump. Does someone one if they are scanlated yet, or if someones going to do it?

Art wise, it's influenced by Eiichiro Oda (very obvious) and Kishimoto. :oh

I don't think you read the last part of my post carefully. I said it was Kishi's storytelling that won over the international fans. Oda beats Kishi in domestics but in international, Kishi takes the cake.
