Well, Dai Amon did release one shot on Miracle Jump.
I know, I bought the magazine almost exclusively because of him :p
But still, it's nothing that can be serialized (well, it's hard to say, but I doubt it).

Sigh... He really shouldn't have turned down the offer to start a new series in SQ when SQ was starting :/

First of all, the week One Piece started was the second week of Takeshi-kun, Shimabukuro's first notable series.

Secondly, you also sort of need to remember the period which OP started in. For the most part people were spelling "doom" for Jump once DB ended and the mid-90s were somewhat of a weird transitional period for the magazine. There were a lot of variety, from the "hits" (Kenshin most notably) to the weirder "cult series" that made up that period (Pt. 5 JoJo, BOY, Nube, Makibaou, Houshin Engi, Wild Half) to those that were still sort of finding themselves (most notably YGO, which was still in or approaching the end of it's first year and was not in "obsessive card-game mode" yet...I''s is a maybe here but the mangaka was well known yet it was still newish) to...well, downright bombs or series that didn't quite bring out the fullest in the mangaka. (a few weeks later, Konomi's first series "COOL: Rental Bodyguard" started...which essentially bombed and was his first taste of the magazine pre-PoT) The only real consistent between the eras is KochiKame...but that's the old tortoise of the magazine so it essentially is exempt from this equation.

The fact that OP essentially captured lightning in a bottle and exploded onto the Japanese scene so early and so amazingly is somewhat of a fluke and doesn't happen that often. It's especially even harder now than it was then, with so many series lasting way longer due to both the magazine's obsession with consistency and mangaka obsessing in stretching out their stories to no end (and their readers letting them get away with it), whereas many 90s series would be impressive to get to 200/250.

What this has to do with Toriko...well, it pretty much impressed Japan from go, but there is still a bit of time to see whether or not it really is something that is what we think it is since it debuted in '08.
Woops, I forgot to post the big difference..
Apart from Dragon Ball, how many mangas had their own anime?
Sure, Ruroken had, Kochikame too, and other mangas had short animes like Nube, Boy and IIRC Midori no Makibao, and later on Yu-Gi-Oh! and Hoshin Engi would come too, and I am not sure about Captain Tsubasa, but even then Captain Tsubasa was last in the TOC even when it was a LOOOOOONNG manga with an anime.
Now, you have 3 very popular, long manga with anime adaptations (4 counting Gintama) that are almost always on top 5 positions, BLEACH has been falling, hopefully the editors at WSJ finally let it die (Sorry for the fans, but it can't get much boring that its now), I think ONE PIECE had it easy back then since there wasn't too much competition, now as I said TORIKO would be competing against 4 veterans with animes (ONE PIECE, NARUTO, BLEACH & Gintama... to a certain extent, because basing the TOC people who like Gintama would probably vote too for Sket Dance or other manga instead of TORIKO)
Now we have seen Shueisha pimping TORIKO like crazy with not much success, hopefully the anime boosts it sales.

Depending on how you judge a series, Jump has had some success the last few years. I'm curious why the big success stories of the last few years are coming from magazines like Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, Morning 2, and GFantasy while Jump hasn't had a blockbuster hit in since Bleach launched ten years ago.
well, its a bit unfair in the sense that most Jump series, including ones that hit bottom of the ToC sell more than most "hit" series in other magazines.....think we are expecting a bit too much on WSJ.

Funny thing though, i don't even remember the last time Bleach scored a 6.7...if ever.
I assure you that Toriko would not be scoring 6.7 in Bleach's current time slot. You know I actually like Toriko better than Bleach but I just find this entire group picture Big 3 issue hilarious.

It's obvious they're pimpin Toriko hard right now, it's years too early for people to be calling Toriko a part of the Big 3. It isn't even bigger than the competitors Fairy Tail (which is nowhere near as popular as the big 3) atm lol... I think Ao no Exorcist has a bigger chance of being that next big Shueisha hit than Toriko... especially after the noticeable increase for Vol 6 which happened just before the anime.

Agreed, I think people are blowing it way out of proportion.

Toriko could certainly get there some day, but it isn't gonna happen immediately.

Kaiten, come on... Bakuman sells well enough... Just because it's not getting pimped as much as Toriko by the editors, we shouldn't discount its success.
Your right about Bakuman, it sells well enough and in my opinion way better than Toriko. And how WSJ is pimping out Toriko it ain't even funny no more.

I think if Fairy Tail was in WSJ it would definitely do better than Toriko but that's just my opinion.

The color page for Godland Company (Iwashiro's new work) has released on Jump official website.

From Sasaki's twitter:
for what stands the 1700?

godland: looks like psyren in little bit cuter, only because of the creature/costum design. the main character (i suppose its the one with the blue shorts) looks totally typical shounen...

1700 Chapter of Kochikame that will appear in that issue. I thought it were "just" 1693 chapters at the moment but with so many chapters it's not easy. Congratulations for Kochikame, that's just awesome.

At first I didn't understand why Toriko, Gintama, Beelzebub, and Sket Dance were on the cover, but then I realized that they all have anime that recently started. xD

Congrats to KochiKame for a whopping 1700 chapters!

Godland looks interesting, I don't know how a mix up of kid characters and adults are going to work, though. o_O Also, Sasaki says that Jump NEXT is only availabe in Japan...does this mean I won't be able to order it through a Japanese bookseller in a foreign country?

Good to see some new Iwashiro Toshiaki work. Looks quite neat with the silly characters. You can clearly see his art but I do agree that the kid looks more shounen than the elmore kids all togther. Is this a one shot? Or a series?

Paser, the magazine for the issue after the Combined issue is almost always printed before Golden Week starts. Sasaki is simply giving us a sneak peak, as oppose to the magazine is on sale or anything.

Early sales, which is usually on Wednesdays, could be pushed up to Monday or even earlier, according to the 2ch spoiler poster T, but it's not going to be a week earlier.

We "might" see the ToC info on Monday, but that's about it.

June Release Schedule:
6/3 Naruto 56
6/3 Bleach 50
6/3 Bleach Official Fanbook 3 Unmasked
6/3 Bakuman 13
6/3 Oumagadoki Doubutsuen 4
6/3 Enigma 3
6/3 Dois Sol 1
6/3 Hetappi Manga Kenkyuujo R

Huh... Now that's fast... Databook 3 for Bleach

I really liked that cover for KochiKame...then again I think it also just gives off a bit of a "comedy vibe" with the characters celebrating Ryotsu. (then again Toriko is more or less action with slight comedy) As for what number it is, I guess KochiKame is so long at this point that it just gets it when it's near the number and they have time to give it the cover. As the old man of the magazine, it sort of has different rights compared to the rest of the series.

Godhand's cover looks nice. The character designs remind me more of Mieru Hito than Psyren, which is a good thing.

Godhand Company already looks really interesting. I hope it will be good, so that we will see a new serialization from Iwashiro Toshiaki. Psyren was quite interesting overall, and some of the arcs was amazing.

Thanks Finestela ;)
I knew that it will be Golden Week this week. But that twit made me confuse, so I asked. But in fact, it's true that editors have on first hand the printed magazine (like in Bakuman), so right now it's not weard at all. My mistake =)
