He only said he thinks it might last longer than that. So, it's not to say he will make the series go on for more than that. It's just a rough estimate Kishi planned. He could end it within that time frame or a little over it. Only time will tell. At this point, the chances are 50-50, but I'm leaning towards the former. 1.5 years is more than enough for him to end the series, unless there's a little bit more stuff he wants to squeeze in.
in the interview, he says it's the pacing issue, and that the story hasn't been progressing as quickly as he intended.
The 1.5 years was mentioned in the form of "I said 1.5 years to my editor, but it looks like it's going to take longer than that." so it's pretty safe to assume that he thinks it's going to take longer than that. Also, he really seems to have no clue when the series might end because of the slow progression.
he also mentions that there will be lot of surprises, and a "character who normally wouldn't appear will come out" so who knows what's gonna happen. though I'm going to assume that this is going to be the last arc. just incredibly long.

(and I think we've talked enough about Naruto at this point)

Just to be sure, are the 1.5 year a duration from now or do they refer to the 1.5 of the previous one ?

Naruto has switched central themes more than once as it's serialization progressed. At first the story was a "quest story" about Naruto's growing up in a world of ninja, then it was "light versus dark" thing with him and Sasuke, then "defeating war"(:fail), and then it was back to a "light versus dark" but this time with Senju and the Uchiha. The result of all this has been a gordian knot of plot threads.
No, Naruto has largely been thematically consistent. Since the beginning Naruto has been about finding acceptance through understanding and compassion. This was presented as the central theme as early as the Zabuza arc. Presentation has largely been consistent: first Naruto is faced with a fellow outsider (Zabuza and Haku, Gara, Nagato, Sasuke, Tobi, Kabuto, Orochimaru). He shows them empathy, sympathizing with their plight. If an emotional breakthrough can be made, the fight ends with Naruto demonstrating the power of compassion. If a breakthrough is not possible, Naruto is always prepared to fight to defend his ninja way, defeating the forces of hatred in combat. With the strength of compassion and understanding, Naruto overcame the animosity of his fellow ninja's, becoming an outsider no longer, but an integral member of the community. Having overcome his outsider status in Part I, Naruto turned too a larger stage, hoping to bring compassion and understanding to the world at large. The War promised to fulfill his mission: all of the world's nations, once adversaries, have become allies against the forces of hatred. Tobi's defeat will be the ultimate symbol of the forces of compassion and understanding defeating hatred and vengeance.

Light vs. darkness is simply another way of saying compassion vs. hatred. At least in initial execution Kishi's intentions were far more nuanced than simply good vs. evil or light vs. darkness, at least trying aiming for something more human, tangible, and easier to relate too. While the execution has slipped over the years, compassion (will of fire) vs. anger (power of hate), has remained central to the plot.

A quest story is a genre, representing a series of plot conventions and a style of narrative progressions. Themes are the moral behind the story, the deeper message the author hopes to convey. One Piece is a classic example of a quest story: the hero leaves home on a long journey, hoping to find an object shrouded in mystery, possession of which would symbolically grant him the status of greatest hero of his age. One Piece is a perfect example of the hero's journey, similar to Jason and the Golden Fleece. Naruto could be construed as a quest of sorts, though in a less archetypical sense. Naruto is a quest of self discovery and acceptance, as the plucky outsider gains acceptance, respect, and ultimately the admiration of those who once rejected him. His goal of becoming Hokage could be seen as represented the ultimate acceptance, the outsider becoming political leader of the village. Actual attainment of the hokage's office is not necessary for completion of the quest. Defeating Tobi and becoming one of the greatest heroes of the ninja world would be more than enough to fulfill Naruto's quest. It would be enough to know that Naruto will be one of the next in line for Hokage, that when the time comes it is as good as his. Otherwise it is a simple matter of Tsunade dying a heroes death and the manga ending with Naruto being declared Hokage by acclaim. Calling Naruto a quest in the classic sense would be a massive stretch though, one could if they were inclined, and if so, it is as much a quest now as it was when the series began. AS with all quests, Naruto's journey must come to an end. By achieving the measure of acceptance defeating Tobi promises too bring, the central conflict of the series and main themes will be resolved. Any further exposition would be needless.

Naruto can wrap up any time precisely because all loose ends have been tied up. Most major plot line has been closed, those that are not will be closed with the defeat of the antagonists. It is important to remember that writers should never spell everything out for the audience. It is up to the reader to infer at least a part of the stories meaning. Nothing is worse than an over didactic writer, robbing the audience of the ability to think, interpret, and comprehend the implications of what has happened.

ANN says this:

Naruto manga creator Masashi Kishimoto revealed in an interview that he anticipates that the manga will continue more than one and a half years from now.
Which probably means it will end around spring 2014 at earliest.

They refer too whenever Kishi wants. All he was saying was that he under estimated how much longer Naruto will last. When last asked, he estimated 1.5 years. He now says it will take longer than that. He has not said how much longer.

Many of you think that Kishimoto wants to extend the series.

But reading the interview, I didn't understand that.
He says he is aiming towards the end, but always takes him more time than expected to reach a certain point of the story.

That's why he says that, although he estimates 1.5 years left, it may take more time.

Reading the interview I face-palmed when Kishimoto said he hasn't given that important role he promised to Kakashi fans in JUMP festa 2009 *3 years ago, so I guess is the 2009 edition..

I mean how slow is the pace if you have been doing 3 years worth of content and haven't even done what you intended to do in the first year worth of those 3 years!
Men.. I guess that 1.5 years is a very, very, veryyyy low estimate on part of Kishimoto..

There are only two main villains left yet he keeps reviving dead people to make more fights....that is extending a series regardless of what he says.

How did you mix those up? The Kakashi Gaiden is far older than his Kakashi/Sakura arc talk, for which I don't see a good point of time to implement into the story aside from putting it right after this war and before the Sasuke conclusion.

@Schabrak:
Mmmm.. IIRC what Kishimoto said was something more along the lines of Kakashi (and Sakura) having a more priminent role in the near future, not neccesarily an arc entirelly devoted to them..
Maybe a Kakashi vs his dad and Sakura vs... Dunno who would suffice for both characters to develop.

I know about the OP, but I meant the TOC for issue 35 specifically. Should've been more specific about that :X
Thanks though!

TOC for issue 35 is this week. It won't appear until tomorrow at the earliest and Friday at the very latest unless something happens.

Was it announced which issue will be the Obon one? 36-37 or 37-38?

No, Naruto has largely been thematically consistent.
I suppose you got it right concerning the hate versus compassion theme. But what about the theme of hardwork that over the time got buried under the theme of born talent and predetermined destiny? Naruto himself started his series as a hated monster orphan outcast longing for acceptance and working hard for it. And at some point in time he turned out to be a son of a hokage, heir to the village and a descendant of the line of most honorable tailed beast vessels. And acceptance? He achieved it long ago and off screen.

Not to mention the magical eyeballs.

Hard work is a theme of every manga in Jump. The magazine's stated theme is ambition, friendship, achievement. Hard work is implicit in that theme. Every Jump hero works vigorously to achieve a goal, even if some feign apathy.
