so that means that kuroko outsells bleach and toriko and would be the real third place for the big 3? xD

that would be a great stroke of luck for the mangaka after surviving only through favoritism and barely staying above the bottom 5. I guess even the anime production company didn't guess to get such a "power horse".

No, it's one volume.

But it certainly is interesting.

We went through this before, but it's exploding because of the anime, though in the long term stuff like Toriko and the like have sold much more. Kuroko sold about 200K while still on the Oricon before the anime started. If it maintains doing well even after the anime ends (or at least until another one begins) and sells well in the long-running totals then it could be a hugely popular series. I'm not sure that'll happen though. It's certainly going to be doing much better than it was.

i understand why people start buying them after discovering a new anime. what i don't understand is why people stop buying volumes after the anime ended? i mean why should i stop if i liked it enough to start reading the series? i would continue as long as it is fun. has it a mainstream effect that they only buy it because it's cool currently?

Hunter x hunter sells 1 million per volume...

Sorta, yeah. I mean, if you check the Oricon yearly-sales things from year to year, when something gets "really big" for one reason or another it goes way up to the top because people buy the whole series because it's the new popular thing. Then it levels off later once that boom fades. Or sometimes it gets little boosts and slowly builds up. Only in very rarecases like with One Piece, it explodes and never goes down. Uh, I think there were a few posts about it a while back where someone explained it better...

http://mangahelpers.com/forum/showt...mic-Rankings?p=2910287&viewfull=1#post2910287

That post of Kaiten's and some of the posts around there discussed the whole "temporary boosts" thing. But there are some series where they sell less after the initial boost. It then depends on how well they maintain from volume to volume AFTER that. I think Kuroko's anime is ending soon, but they announced there was going to be an OVA or something. And given how well it's done, it's guaranteed to get another anime season. Let's hope it keeps doing well, since it's a good series. Part of why it may not is because it generally doesn't do well in the TOCs. It's possible Kuroko's subject matter may be something just more suited to anime than manga, because of the dynamic nature of basketball.
It's unlikely it would go down DRAMTICALLY though. Even Bleach still sells well.

if there is a volumes to sell. most of the time there isn't one. so 3x400k ones would beat it in the long term, but i won't say anything final, because the big3 thing wasn't meant to be taken that serious. It was more like a hilarious comment about kuroko dragging into it instead of bleach defending it's place, which no one would ever has guessed half a year ago.

There never was a "big 3" in Japan. It was a meme generated online referring exclusively to manga Edited Mangas, making no real reference to popularity in Japan. The term has long since been abandoned, both in reference to international and Japanese fandom. We online are exposed to so many more manga these days, that banalities such as the "the big 3" are found less and less necessary. With so much more information available regarding manga popularity in Japan, few feel the need to invoke a term as limited, and general, as "the big 3" when the subject comes up. We have the information to speak with more nuance. As TXC pointed out, the term never really meant much when describing sales in Japan. Hunter x Hunter has always been more popular in Japan, from the beginning Bleach never really had a place in "big 3". You are welcome to cling to cliches, if you so choose.

What would lead you to believe that the end of an anime adaption inevitably leads to a decline in sales? Bleach? Could it be possible that in the case of Bleach, the decline in volume sales and TOC rank actually corresponds to fan frustration with the direction of the story? I have seen no correlation between manga sales declining when the anime ends. Nodame Cantobile and Nana remained two of the most popular manga in Japan long after their respective anime ended. Full Metal Alchemist remained just as popular during the long break between the first anime and second. Countless similar examples can be found.

3 x 400,000 does not equal 2 x 1,000,000

Well to be fair most series sell less when the respective anime ends. The gap depends and probably is related to the fact if the series is still ongoing and if the delivered quality is/remains high. Of course it's possible to sell the same or even more after the anime ended but that's limited to a few special series like FMA. To be honest I think it's likely that Kuroko will sell less after the anime ends because it's an entertaining read but nowhere near the level of FMA. You never know for sure though, the anime did a superb job of promoting the series.

Tl;dr incoming.

Fist of all, there is "Big 3". Or rather there was, I'll touch on that further on. "Big 3" is referring to 3 most dominant mangas specifically in Jump. Volumes sales, popularity in Japan as a whole etc. has nothing to do with it what so ever. In fact volume sales is a completely different subject on it's own.
Popularity in Jump is obviously constant high ratings in TOC, high scores in different polls, fan letters etc., just constant high interest shown by readers. All of that leads to higher publicity of said manga in Jump, more space for ads, for anime stuff, merchandise and all that. In other words manga gets big, dominating the information space of Jump. Big 3. Bleach was an absolute Big 3, no doubt about it, only an idiot would question that. For the most part of it's run after it hit big, it never left top 5, toppling OP and nardo as #1 on weekly basis all the way up to Arrancar's arc end. Publicity was through the roof, mercs, anime stuff, all on the scale only those 3 mangas ever archived. HxH, or any other manga then running, never even came close.

Now, what happened after Arrancar arc ended is that the majority of Bleach readers just left. And the reason is very simple - the story was over. Unlike OP and nardo, where the protagonist has a goal he can try to archive for eternity, stretching manga for as long as the authors wants and containing reader's "interest" with that final goal, Bleach had a self-contained story that was completely resolved. Now story just started from ground zero and people don't want that from 400+ chapters manga, good chunk just quit.

Kubo should have connected and foreshadowed this new arc waaaaays during the Arrancar arc and transitioned smoothly. Then he would have maintained popularity. Instead he's now pretty much forced to start from scratch with attention to his work. Whether he succeeds eventually is hard to tell, I sure hope so, but Bleach is of course no Big 3 anymore.
And that brings me to why there is no more Big 3 at all. Shueisha is desperately trying to replace Bleach with some other works, such as Toriko, Kuroko and some more recent crap they launched. All with no palpable result. Those mangas may be successful in their own right, but they are no titans to Jump like OP, nardo and Bleach were. There is at best only visible Big 2 now, and they sure milking the hell from those 2.

adding the hiatus between the last ongoing serialization and the most recent one doesn't lead me to think that he is able to create 2 volumes every year. besides the 3 of kurobo was a wild guess. its probably 4 a year, isn't it?

Why don't we just drop this whole "Big 3" convo shit? It's boring. We do this seemingly every week and everybody seems to still believe the same thing they did before it started. Surely we can talk about popularity in a different way...

I fear Big 3 will stay forever. And after that there will be the Big 3 next generation I don't think it can change now.
People likes tops, in particular when it is a top 3.
But honestly I don't see the problem in using one term or another. And since the rank and sells don't vary much from one week to the others, it's quite normal that the same discussions happen again and again.
