I just hope that the CP of BNH return to "comic style" (I think the author missed the chance to create a cool design for the covers, like Kubo or Matsui did). :(

The series has cool designs for covers though? They all look nice

Yes, all of them looks nice. This "comic style" is just a label with "Jump Comics" written along with the name of the chapter and a bar code. Nothing really extraordinary, taking this out you have a nice CP anyway. :p

I just noticed something and I want to see what you guys think, there are 4 more issues after issue 15 (which will have OP as the cover) before the April anime season begins (Issues 16-19 which come out between 3/16 and 4/6) and there are 5 series which may deserve a cover in said period (Soma/Nisekoi/Gintama for the anime and WT/HQ for their aniversaries), do you think they'll give all of them a cover and extend the anime promotion until the second week of airing (issue 20, 4/13) or will one of these series not get a cover?

I think Soma and HQ will definitely get the cover, pretty much every Jump series gets the cover around the time their first anime season begins airing and HQ is just too big to not celebrate the anniversary grandly
As for Nisekoi and Gintama, Nisekoi would probably get one, Gintama maybe not, I doubt the Gintama anime needs any more promotion, I mean, it won't be getting many new viewers by now
WT is the biggest mystery here, I mean, it's been really low in the ToC again lately and even if the anime is ongoing it just never get the popularity burst many other series have, it wouldn't be weird if it didn't get an anniversary cover this year (then again, Beelzebub/Medaka pretty much only got the cover on their anniversaries and they were pretty similar to WT in terms of sales/ToC positions)

Of course its not extraordinary, but its a detail that differentiates the design. In fact it would be really cool if in each CP the author did a tribute to classic superhero comics covers. Just saying. :p

It's just the layout that looks like the covers of american comics. Silly thing, I know... but I like it. :mono

Hey guys. I came up with a quick question that I hope will lead to an interesting discussion. Is there any data concerning the survival/success rate of WSJ series that started off as one shots vs those that did not? For example, Death Note, Bleach, Naruto, Boku no Hero, One Piece, Nurarihyon, Beelzebub and numerous others started one shots and all reach success (although at different levels of course). On the other hand, Assassination Classroom, D.Gray-Man, YYH, Gintama, Saint Seiya, etc. did not start off as one shots to the best of my knowledge. The 4 new series all had one shots and while that's certainly no indicator of success, I'm curious if it significantly increases the chances that the work will survive in the magazine when compared to their counterparts.

I think that Haikyuu will get cover in issue 16 and World Trigger right after this, issue 17. After this, the anime promotions can take place. Promotion before the anime doesn't seem a rule. Nisekoi only got a cover when the anime was already in the half, issue 24. It is almost a standard for Nisekoi, it gets a cover around issue 24~28, it was this way in 2012 (#28), 2013 (#27) and 2014 (#24).
I think they will focus the promotion in Shokugeki no Soma, which is the unique actually new anime debuting. Even this cannot guarantee that it is going to get a cover before or in the first week of the anime.

If they really want to promote everything, they always can do what they did with Kuroko no Basket and Medaka Box, both got cover in the same magazine.

D.Gray-man definitely had a one-shot, or rather, it was heavily inspired by one of the one-shots Hoshino did. So I'd say D.Gray-man's ideas were tested out before becoming serialized.

In general, I don't think there's that much of a difference in which series survive longer. I can't remember its name, but there was a manga serialized a while back that had an award-winning oneshot. The manga itself crapped out after 14 chapters or so (I think it was about telling riddles? The MC was bald). Having a popular oneshot doesn't guarantee success, it just guarantees some people will be excited for its first chapter. The tough part is how to stay serialized, I think.

Kikai Banashi Hanasaka Ikkyu. Its oneshot won the five chapter Golden Future Cup after Metallica Mallurca, Beelzebub and Nurarihyon no Mago (I think that was 2009?). Then the duo behind it made another series without any preceding one shot. It was called Smoky B.B. That bombed as well.

I can't believe I still remember it right away. I think it was because I remember both the series being some of the blandest I've ever read, with the writer just repeating an episodic template from chapter 1 and expecting it to fly every chapter on with little to no inspiration of changing things around.

Ikkyu was great as a oneshot and even the series had nice ideas. The problem in my opinion is that the audience is not suited for such a style. They don't want to think. They want mindless action. Even Dn did bad in the Toc. And B.b. Smoky was just bad. Like, we need a new Sport series. Who is available?

I'd say the best of manga can make you think and still have action. AC for example has plenty of action, but there's quite some emphasis on the technical aspects behind the special moments. I've barely read OP and MHA, but I'm sure they had to have both action and either technical, emotional, or even both backgrounds, to draw such massive audiences. Kikai Banashi would be the manga having all the technical aspects down, but no action to support it. For it to market itself on lacking a basic aspect of shonen manga really didn't do it any favours in compelling anyone. And really, why should it?

If manga were cars marketed to take drivers (editors/readers) on a long, long journey from point A (exposition) to point B (fandom loyalty), and they only had a limited timeframe (<10 chapters) to do so, the best of them would have a solid engine and great steering control. Kikai Banashi advertises itself on having nice steering, but no engine. Sure, it doesn't run on power, but are drivers willing to waste time in it as it barely inches its way off the starting point? Smoky B.B. is more like a car that markets itself on having this great engine, but no steering wheel. Now there's drive, but no way to control direction to get the driver where they need to go. I guess the duo thought all they needed was drive the second time around, and the sports genre would be perfect for that, but then they tried to distance themselves from whatever good Kikai Banashi had, hence omitting any thought.

You know, in that respect, I'd say Kikai Banashi and Smoky B.B. are actually opposites of each other, the former being all brains and no brawn, and the latter being all brawns and no brain. But they both ultimately failed for about the same reason: the writer was unwilling or unable to progress from chapter 1, thus unable to compensate for either of the two missing factors.

The thing is, those mangas may be intelligent if you look into them, but you don't need to if you don't want to. Its like The Simpsons. Its a show which can be funny for kids and adults alike. if you think about it you get into its deeper core but the obvious shallow part is always there. Thats what Ikkyu lacked.

VIZ should have sent them as a present. They have constant contact regarding the editon of the mangas, approval of cover and color pages and so forth. So, it strengthens the friendship among publishers.
We had some experiences with this here in Brazil. Some Brazilian mangas appear in the Manga Museum and Kodansha has one of brazilian publisher's Sailor Moon poster in their wall. It is nice to see this exchange. :)

With hundreds of titles, plots and genres we will hardly find any correlation between one shots and success. If anything the editor might change the direction, which should put the ones with one shots in favour in this comparison. It will depend on the editor for chosing the right direction most likely.

VIZ should have sent them as a present. They have constant contact regarding the editon of the mangas, approval of cover and color pages and so forth. So, it strengthens the friendship among publishers.
Sasaki Hisashi being on top of all international publications might also help.
