I think it hit 20k after 2 weeks and got reprints, for its genre and being basically a shojo series I thought those were above average numbers but I'm not an expert
reprints without numbers are always deceptive, I mean a reprint could just be like 2000 or 5000 copies...

I agree, but you have say the same for digital sales. You can't have it both ways lol

Eyepatch's video was good, one of the better youtubers. I can't remember who said but I like analytic videos over reviews, why should I watch someone elaborating on something I can form my own opinion on. I respect he corrected himself and did his due diligence with informed Jump followers while leaving up his old video to not shy away from his previous misinformation. He recited mostly alot of stuff people regurgitate here, MHA's ranks and western backlash, Act Age's rise, push campaign that everyone can see clear as day, editorial promotion, sales figures, etc.
I think Yonkou's response on twitter says it best
>Says the TOC isn't a ranking system and the order is decided by editors and not reader input
>Proceeds to make an arbitrary ranking himself
Also does not give a really cohesive explanation of each series on the line up or explain their rankings (like stating that MHA is more popular in the west or Japan and its rankings is due to the negative reception of Endeavor's treatment which is false, ignoring that Haikyuu is the second highest selling title on the lineup despite being ranked 8th, ignoring that despite Stone being 3rd its sales are actually lower than We Never Learn) also pretty much insinuating that Dr. Stone and TPN takes after Hunter X Hunter which is ridiculous in itself. As an opinion piece the video is fine but there's nothing informative to get from it which is the problem with a lot of his videos hence why so many people calls him out on it.

Only thing dude lost me on was praise of Dr. Stone and its villain. From my experience the appeal comes from the art and creation aspect, the characters aren't strong outside a few while the story does enough to maintain interest. Dr. Stone is a "what you see, what you get" series. The question about the world has been asked but there's been barely any mystery built upon that one question, instead it's more of a RPG where you create and enlist. Regarding the villain I think, without any doubt of my mind, he might be the worst villain to come out in years.
It says a lot that he got Tsukasa's motivation entirely wrong as well so he either danced around what is the worst written aspect of the manga or didn't even read it.

Since you seem to be an expert about this topic, does this mean we will never have "natural" successful manga in Jump anymore? I don't know if this topic is clear as day, since every manga post 2014 is pushed, but when it comes to successful manga from previous years some people say that those were pushed as well and others say they weren't pushed.

I asked about this before and I got various opinions about it. It's not really the clearest thing about the magazine.

What is considered to be a natural success to begin with?

The only title that got crucified for Jump pushing it was Toriko hence why its mostly seen as a joke (in terms of its mistaken mass appeal) nowadays because they went all out on a product they were never sure was going to be a huge hit to begin with. When you look into the top three manga of every decade on the TOC you'd see that they were always the top selling as well so why is it that all of a sudden when Nakana started that Dr. Stone and Neverland are pushed to the front when they former sales are no where near close to being good as the titles being pushed to the back? This was actually a very interesting subject Super Eyepeatch Wolf brought up in his video.

Wow, how things have changed. Back 3 or so years ago when I caught up on the scans for everything in Jump, like half the series weren't even close to being up to date. I remember Assassination Classroom and World Trigger being like half scanlated lol. Now it's literally just the newbies, and the ones that are looking like they'll stay are likely to have their scans up to date in due time. Though we don't have any obscure gag series currently, and those usually get ignored (We had Kochikame, Isobee and Saiki all at once not long ago).

"What is considered to be a natural success to begin with?"
That's a good question. Does such a thing even exist? Is everything just "pushed"? What can be considered as not being pushed? Who knows for sure, right? :derp We should ask all of the WSJ EiC's, they're the ones that will give us the best answers.

About the sales, the whole manga market has had a big decline in sales. New series are struggling more and more to take off and we can definitely see this with WSJ as well. It's not just Jump that is struggling to get new manga that sell over 100k. Most magazines seem to struggle to even find something that can sell about 5k consistently, most of them are doing even worse in that regard. I feel like we'll see a lot of magazines disappear in the upcoming years as they'll struggle more and more to stay afloat.

Now, the print manga market is definitely in decline. We can see the statistics. Magazine sales are also declining rapidly. But, we are seeing a rise in digital sales. The question is, just how impactful are the digital sales? If someone buys a digital volume for a manga instead of a print one, does it make the publisher less money or more money? We'll probably never find out. When digital sales inevitably get bigger than print sales will that actually end up being a negative thing for the industry?

How many of those digital sales are just extremely popular manga which are also very successful in their print sales department, series with big established fanbases( The Kingdom's and the One Piece's). How many of those digital sales actually go into the newest manga that we see? I'd really love to know this.

We can still fairly easily see if a new manga will be cancelled if it has pretty bad print sales estimations and for the majority of the times the manga with the weak print sales do get axed. Digital sales clearly aren't doing much for these manga.

Why are sales declining? Multiple factors. The population in Japan is declining. Physical media is losing relevance in general as the digital age grows stronger. Now there's so much entertainment you can get access to using something as small as a smartphone. Maybe a lot of people that used to care about manga are now trying to focus on their careers and on establishing their own families. There's definitely even more to it. Most kids nowadays are more than satisfied with Youtube and nothing else and I feel like it's definitely the same with Japan. Jump has even acknowledged Youtube as one of their enemies.

SEW brought up a lot of subjects, but he didn't properly expand on them, that's all I have to say about that.

I think thats my favorite term.

Someday, when it is defined, I wonder if we will have automatons with scripts that are able to generate, draw, and write mangas without human input.

Jump has had a history of running sexually charged and fan service heavy series. So I would assume there is technically nothing stopping authors from at least implying that their characters, (adult) protagonists in particular, have sexual experience right? Or as a magazine ostensibly aimed at young adults, despite the adult viewership, feels that a (adult) protagonist with that kind of experience is harder to relate to.

Different company but Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine aimed at the same demographic is currently running Domestic Girlfriend which is all about sexual relations of highschool students. Tsuredure Children just ended recently and at least the anime seemed to be hinting towards one of the couples having a sexual relationship. Suzuka also has one. Can't think of any in Jump. Maybe Gintama had one of those jokes where it cuts to two characters naked in bed?

There's a few series with implied sex scenes (Shaman King, Ichigo 100%) but it only ever seems to be just once and they never seem to be able to say it outright either. Gintama has sex gags on occasion but never any serious ones.

It's weird since much of Magazine's battle shounen feel a bit more kiddy to me in tone than jump ones but they're also more willing to show sex and such with romance series.

In one chapter a couple was about to have sex but the girl have the period and they end without doing it.
I don't remember other couple having sex explicit or implicit (except I think the delincuent/president)

in the anime there was a part where one couple was about to have sex but the guy's mom walked in and ruined the mood. That might have been an original thing or something though.

In Bakuman, Takagi and Miyoshi had hints towards it after they were married and later they talked about making a baby, Death Note had some hints for Light and Misa and one pretty strong implication for Light and Kiyomi.

And of course when it comes to explicit sex scenes in a shounen manga in Jump you can't get any less subtle than this.

It becomes more squick when you realize these characters are only 14.
