I knew Shimabu purposefully avoided character backgrounds and even developments in Toriko, the main cast hardly got anything but Midora got everything. Takeshi having 3 one shots was a bit of a surprise but they were different from the serialization. A lot of the interview just confirmed my assumptions about him & the series he created.

I need Build King serialized, I want see a architect battle shonen work, it has a lot of potential with his creative mind. I've always wanted Shimabu back way more than Kishi.

Well said Shimabu, this magazine definitely has a vitamin C deficiency. We need more comedy series!

I guess we can Semi confirm that Kishimoto’s next series will be a weekly series in Jump?

I mean, they keep saying that it's going to come out soon, but it never does. I think there was talk about it coming out this year, but there's only one or two serialization rounds left.

Still, I'm interested to see how the reception of his new series would be. Has something like this happened before? People have come back with new series after finishing huge hits in the past, but nothing that reached the sheer size of the Naruto franchise before, as far as I know. I wonder if at this point, having Kishimoto's name on the series would be enough by itself to keep the series alive for a few years, or if Naruto was a once in a lifetime hit, and it'll just flop.

Maybe next heroaca game will look and be much more polished and different beyond just the ability to play dress up with characters.

Pretty sure Watsuki came out with a flop right after Kenshin.

Needed more sex appeal like haikyuu.
Haikyuu doesn't even have that much sex appeal besides very few "ikemen" characters like Oikawa and maybe Ushijima. RxL had much more fujo appeal. They even had a trap character.

RxL failed because it simply couldn't tell a great story. It was honestly quite boring to read weekly. I found it was much better when binged but that's not how Jump works. In addition, it simply couldn't pull of the hype factor of Kuroko. The biggest sports series from Jump all had that hype and adrenaline factor throughout the matches. Slam Dunk almost doesn't let you stop reading until the match is done. Haikyuu and Sumou are similar in that aspect. RxL didn't have that. I think I took at least one break per chapter because it simply didn't keep me captivated enough to read the whole thing in one go. Sex appeal and whatnot, hardly do much to sell manga. SD, Haikyuu, Sumou and even Kuroko also had interesting characters. RxL barely had that. Everyone was simply bearable and okay. None of them were offensive or unpleasant but I can't really say they were interesting either.

What would you say about Prince of Tennis? I'd say it was the most similar title to RxL. And Prince of Tennis however became the great spokon of 00s (even becoming the 14th most sold Jump title)

Prince of Tennis only became crazy towards the mid-half and even then it wasn't too bad. Putting aside New PoT, the original had that hype factor. Ryoma might have been dull but he was surrounded by a lot of fun characters that you could empathize with. A lot of the greatest matches don't even have Ryoma as a player in them. Tezuka v Atobe is one of the peaks of the series and its quite realistic (aside from Tezuka Zone and Zero shiki to an extent) and you went from hating Atobe to really supporting him towards the end. Seigaku as a team never lost but that goes for all sports series. Sure Haikyuu has Karasuno lose the first time but do you really think they won't do well or win at the nationals? That's pretty much the promised path for sports series and that's okay. The journey is more important.

Prince of Tennis side characters are much better than the MC. Ryoma pretty much haven't lost a single tourney match if I remember it correctly since he is usually the "Ace"

The 1st match Ryoma vs Kaido are intense and keep the heart bumping. Kaido losing to Ryoma at the beginning doesn't make him a fodder, instead it drives him further to earn a starter spot. Tennis, unlike golf has potential for rally, where you don't know which side will get the point (similar to Haikyuu matches)

The series also great as establish "powercreep" at the very beginning. Tezuka and the Golden Pair are national level tennis players. Fuji is your eyes closed prodigy

Surprised that the interviews hadn't been shared yet, guess I was lucky that the Jump book was available when I went to the Exhibit last Friday. It's quite thick, and almost everything has an english translation together with the original jap, which is a pretty nice move. Feels like Jump is really acknowledging their foreign fanbase.

Anyway, my favourite part was the mangaka all writing/drawing something on the Shonen Jump logo:

Yes, it was so crowded it was almost impossible to get a clean shot from afar lol. If anyone's interested in a closer shot of a specific drawing, I have that for most of them.
