This comment is ancient by the the pace this thread is moving but, Hiro Mashima once said that Gildarts was based off George Morikawa (the creator of Ippo). Since it obviously doesn't seem to be design wise, I think it's funny that it might speak to his personality. (Source for that statement)

Also why were people saying HQ and MHA aren't pillars? Both series literally sell more than anything in Shounen Mag or Sunday besides Silver Spoon... Their only real contenders atm are TG, Kingdom, OPM, AoT, HxH, Silver Spoon and Sangatsu - 4 of which are Shueisha properties, and 2/3 that aren't release one volume a year if they're lucky... Even if OP wasn't around atm, Shueisha would still be crushing the competition.

PD: Just noticed. Some characters of end of 80 and beginning of 90 are both in Volume 1 and 2 (Rokudenashi Blues, Dragon Quest Dai, Magical Taruruto-kun, etc). However, that's not the case for end of 90 and beginning of 00 characters (Yugi is only in Volume 2, while One Piece, Naruto, HxH and Prince of Tennis are only in Volume 3).
Exorcist manga are the best.
