In my boredom again, I've created a list of important baseball manga in Shonen Jump. Not only the first spokon in the magazine, baseball was the main Jump pillar in 70s until Circuit no Okami, Doberman Deka and Ring ni Kakero happened.

I think it's funny how there haven't been any new successful ones for almost 20 years, looking at the start date for Mr. Fullswing.

PD: Circuit no Okami and Doberman Deka are the great forgotten ones in Jump merchandising. They were their two biggest success titles in middle 70s, just before Cobra and Kinnikuman.
You need to get bored more often.

On that note, I've just started putting together a Jump database of sorts over the past few days, because all this info is out there, just not in one place. Figured I'd post what I've done so far. If something like this already exists, let me know so I can stop lol. Or if there's a Jap equivalent someone knows of that I can directly translate from without having to gather multiple sources, that'd be neat. Otherwise I'm open to suggestions for other info to add, or formatting improvements. Also have all the debut covers for every series, but can't think of a way to include them neatly in a spreadsheet . Anyway, it's gonna take a while to work my way backwards, so I'm just doing whatever sections I feel like atm, meaning it's a bit out of wack currently.

Sidenote: Shudan and Cross Account started in a weird time where no one seemed to number their first ranks, so I had to work them out myself. I don't know if anything was absent those issues and not counted, so if their actual ranks are different to what I have, let me know please.

Also surprisingly series length (which I'm using to gauge success of lesser known series. 75+ I'll highlight in yellow) is the most annoying column because most sources (that I know of at least) don't give a chapter count. Normally I have to search up the final issue on comicvine and find out what chapter is listed:-_-.

That's a nice list. Thanks!

About the covers, if storage isn't a problem, you can add them (or a limited quality version of them) to a shared folder on google drive and put the links in the sheet.

It would be great if you could fill in the details for the older manga!

Interestengly, this baseball trend stopped in 1980. And we know Captain Tsubasa was born in 1981.

And Captain Tsubasa author wanted to do a baseball manga firstly.

^ Yeah, which I believed is a catalyst for it massive first print for volume 1. It's the only new series since Eyeshield21 that got first place, or #1 in the TOC placement :zomg.

List of series that got #1 for their fist ranking? I'm only aware of:-

Hinomaru Zumo
One Piece
Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi!
Fist Of The North Star
Eyeshield 21

I wonder what went so wrong with Hinomaru. True, it still survives, gets part 2 story in manga, gets anime, did 1st place in first ToC.

Yet its sales are simply terrible. RobotxLaserman in less than a year had sold more than Hinomaru in the 4 years it has been published.

PD: In Scruffy8642 list so far, only titles which started 2nd in ToC has been Assasination Classroom and BoBoBo. In 3rd place you can see some more.
PD2: Most of Jump survivors started in 4-6th place in ToC with some exceptions in both sides of spectrum (Kimetsu started 10th for example). So I'm hoping Noah's Notes starts in 4th-5th position in its first ranked ToC.

Wait, One Piece ranked first in its first ranking? I thought it had been third or fourth. It's the eighth week thing, right? I remember seeing the ToC here a few years ago. I think I"s was in the cover, Kenshin was 1 and Takeshi 2.

8 week ToC is an estimate, not a hard fact.

OP and Takeshi getting 1st place are confirmed facts from firsthand account.

Oh, ok. Since that parameter was apparently used for the other series, I thought they were doing the same with OP.

If I've seen well, Dragon Ball first ToC was 6th

Man, it's surprising how Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi! was a huge success almost like One Piece in end of 90s and beginning of 00s, and then after Shimabukuro was arrested in 2002, title fell in total irrelevance.

Toriko gave it the final nail getting all its popularity left

That's what Oda said in the fax xD

Same but once you read it you can really see why it was popular with kids. It could've definitely exploded in popularity even more if it just had an anime. They did an OVA but nothing else after that. It had way more potential than Toriko that couldn't reach 500k sales.

Surprised that from all the stuff in 00s, the only one with first place in first ranking ToC was Eyeshield 21
