I don't know about competence but if you look at the new series serialized after August 2017, around the time he took the EiC position, its not really an exciting list:

Lycopene- cancelled
Full Drive- cancelled
Golem Hearts- cancelled
Bozebeats- cancelled
Act-age
Jujutsu
Noah's notes
Ziga
Kisetsu
Invade You
Other series that ended after he entered:
Marie
Cross Account

Just from this list, I personally find almost nothing that holds my interest. Act-age seemed interesting but I'm not a huge fan of the premise. Jump Rising is personally a mess. Jujutsu was probably the only thing that seemed good to me and even then it needs quite some work. Ziga seems like it doesn't know what it wants to do. The latest 2 don't appeal to me at all.
don't forget about shuudan.... never forget

Jump’s lineup has a lot series that just have a certain “crowd” appeal, if that makes sense. KnY’s art is discouraging to me, while BC’s content discouraged me to look into it further. It feels like there’s not enough series that appeal to a bigger crowd and everything is more “for a certain audience”.

>year 2025
> One Piece nearing its end, everyones panicking because the only big hit in Jump is Kishimotos new series
> Sharkbait is still baiting people into his logic
> G_I_A is back still venerating veterans and trashing MHA whenever he has a chance
> I'm still waiting on Galaxy Gangs serialization.

lets try steering this ship to a different (not actually better) direction

I may not understand how all the debacle unfold in Japan.. but isn't it a bit too early, Jump?
Despite what I think of Watsuki, Kenshin is a huge series. It was one of the pillars of its golden age so it makes sense that they'll put it front and center, regardless of what kind of monster the mangaka is. They made a fuss about it but I guess people were able to separate the work from the mangaka.

Why did EA consider Star Wars Battlefront 2 sales a disappointment despite selling 8-9 million copies within the first month? If a smaller company had a game that sold 8-9 million in its lifetime, that game would be held at a very different perspective as well.
It's the same logic here.
not really? Theres others costs associated there with games (marketing and budget to make it) that required more to be sold for them which suggests they kind of blew their budget; quite sure the economics of manga selling is much different. The reach of games is also different, consider there are 70mln ps4s and 30 mln xbox ones, even selling 10% of this total (10mln) is challenging for any game to do. most seem to be success at just 1-3mln which is just 3%.

That seems to be the case. When half of your titles are niche hits there's next to no overlap hence the huge gap in sales between titles. Years ago zomething like Death Note was considered a niche hit because it generally did not appeal to Jumps target audience and wasn't trying to but it still garnered huge criticial and financial success because of it and now with the re-release of Slam Dunk showing just how longstanding a series can hold on to its audience it feels like the newer titles doesn't have that same level of appeal.

And it today's news a light novel writer's career is in shambles because he made a racist tweet 3 to 5 years ago. Oh Japan.

Thats why the whole Jump Super Push just seems like one unnecessarily risky thing to me. Yeah these series are cool and are doing decent, but in no way shape or form, outside of potentially The Promised Neverland, are they mega hits. So with all the promotion and anime's it seems like if these series dont blow up potentially like Jump wants they're kinda limiting themselves out of potential huge hits.

I'd argue half and half on that. There are definitely series that are niche like Kimetsu and the like but they're balanced out by Stone which I'd say is meant to appeal to the bigger crowd. Then you have series like Yuragi and Bokuben, and Robo to an extent, which are more "Otaku-centric" though with mainstream appeal. Then you've got your OP, Heroaca, BC, HxH, Haikyuu, and Neverland which are mainstream hits. I'd say Jump isn't as niche as it may seem.

I actually feel bad for him because of the bombardments of bad news, controversy breaks out, seiyuu resigned, anime cancelled, English publication halted,

Japan cares more about not showing their dark spot in history more than *properly* reprimanding acts of pedophilia

MS translates some niche series. I don't see why they couldn't translate Kimetsu and get it out to that audience but I don't know what that group is thinking. I'm sure personal preferences play a part though.
I thought that MS just translates series that brings the most traffic to their site.

It's all about business man. Kenshin is more of a profitable and famous property than generic Isekai harem #687539 and there would have been an uproar if they decided to pull everything from the franchise but with this work? I doubt anyone cares. I feel for the guy though to watch everything you've work hard for crumble before your eyes just because you didn't delete a three year old tweet.

The Jump Rising preview was very unappealing when it first dropped. Was even less hype for that than the Lycopene/GH/Full Drive round.
Gotta admit Shueisha did well in announcing Kimetsu, Neverland, and Kaguya anime at nearly the same time.

Considering how his LN shows his racism as well....yeah, no sympathy from me for that.
They're both horrible anyways.

From this list I can say that I like Act-age and Noah's Notes, but I don't care for them so much that I would be devastated if they were axed, I'd just feel sad for them. Shuudan was nice but it didn't feel like it belonged in WSJ.

And then I have to wonder, do Jump have some really great new artists and some great new ideas and concepts that are currently being developed? Or are we just going to get more eh series like these ones? I have seen some fantastic artists appear in all kinds of other magazines recently, so I wonder if new talents are just willing to take a risk somewhere else than in Jump. At least in another magazine, if you're a talented artist, then in the best case scenario your manga gains momentum and has a future, even if it never becomes as huge as something from WSJ.. In Jump there is the risk of investing a lot of time and effort into an idea that you consider to be your greatest since you are aiming for success in WSJ, while also being under pressure for a weekly schedule potentially for the first time and then you can have your soul crushed instantly if your manga doesn't gain any traction.

We got some Giga mangaka join WSJ, but I wonder if they're the best ones they could currently get their hands on?

Of course you have veterans, but there's no guarantee that their manga will do well and it's not like there is a great selection of veterans that are completely available for WSJ. Most veterans are busy with something else and most of them probably don't want to do weekly serializations in WSJ anymore. If they can make a manga anywhere else, you bet that's what they'll do, especially if they had very successful manga in the past.

A lot of people are saying that Kishimoto will return, when there is no guarantee that he will return to WSJ. We can't even be certain that he'll even come back to draw manga again even if he said he would return to draw something. Dealing with Naruto weekly couldn't have been easy on him for such a long time. Now that he's had the chance to spend some time relaxing with his family maybe he'll just stick to keeping things this way since he doesn't even need to draw another page of manga for the rest of his life. He could've returned to do Boruto monthly, but he even decided to skip on that.

Depends on their editor. For series from the big publishers they only translate what will give them the most traffic hence why no Sunday titles are on there.

Ippo always gets translated in chunks instead of weekly mainly because the editor likes it.
