I see no problem with changing the gender. Sometimes when reading a series I wonder what would change if one or two characters were female or male, most of the time, not much would change, other times some things would look differently than before. Like take Deku for example, who has a real lot of fanart where he is shown as female, if he was a girl from chapter 1 what would change? The personality would still be the same ofc, but for example Bakugos bullying on Deku could be seen under a different light, heck he might even get made fun about him being into Deku because he is so hard to "her" or people would stand up more against Bakugo saying that he goes too far against a girl for there is in general a difference seen between how a boy can treat another boy compared to a girl.

Who hired that imbecile? Does he even realize what Shun's character represents?

Shun is a bad character to change, his androgyny is kind of the point of his character... I'm not really all that against this in theory for other characters though. Especially for a series like Saint Seiya where the gender balance is entirely nonexistent and inherently dated.

I'm more and more inclined to believe that this series is not for long time fans. I'm not against equality, but when you change a major character gender only because of fear of backlash i don't think that's good. You could use the other females characters in a more important way, especialy atena.
In the end shun is the most kind and human of the bronze saints, when he is a men that communicates a personality that stand out in comparison of the others.
Will he retain this kind of importance with the gender change? What do you guys think?
Dialogues and characters traits will have to be changed, and interactions too. If is well made than the decision cannot be said to be wrong, But will it be well made enough to put in to risk losing some of the old fanbase?

Yeah it's a little weird given Shun being a strong but gentle man. Changing the gender of his character almost seems more offensive and appealing to traditional gender roles. It's a very lazy choice.

I agree, it's kind of lazy changing him, If they want to change one of the bronze saints then hyoga is a better choice.

Genuinely doubt it. The stupid writer is changing everything like how the new Shun is supposed to be protected by Ikki and how she learns to fight from him.

Honestly they should've just given more spotlight to the already great women in Saint Seiya as others have said. It would keep things the same and give more development to the minor females.

What sucks about Horikoshi is he initially wrote these strong and interesting female characters only to completely forget they existed after the sports festival.

Yeah, a real waste of good character potential. It says something when the crazy villain girl turns out to be far more interesting than half of the previous female cast.

I think he means Deku, Shoto and Kacchan, and not literally the in-universe Big Three.
Well, they are the next big three for sure. That's a given since all of them wanna be Number 1 Hero in the future.

Yeah, what MHA does or doesn't do with it's female characters is irrelevant here. They are changing Shun-s gender for .... what exactly? I thought "toxic masculinity" or whatever is called is bad and men shouldn't be violet and other crap like that, yet they are making the most gentle of the Saints a women.... But it's Netflix, so I don't know why I'm surprised.

Saint Seiya is on my list to read after the Viz change, this should be interesting xD. Just did a quick tally i have over ~10 Jump series and at least 1000+ chapters to read.

I don't see what the big deal is, it's an adaptation, not the original manga. They already have the Saints fighting tanks and helicopters, so I don't see how making Shun a woman is that big a deal. It doesn't change anything about the original manga, that story is still the same.

It's not about how the story is changed, I think most people expected that with Netflix.

The problem is the statement that changing his gender makes. If they wanted a strong female frontliner, they could've given more development for an existing female character. Instead they chose to make the most effeminate guy in the group, who stood out because of his calm and caring demeanor amongst the other hot blooded individuals, and turned him into a girl. Many took this change as reinforcing the gender stereotype that men can't be caring or compassionate, and honestly it's not a stretch.

Also, I just checked the writer's tweets, and he said something along the lines of wanting to respect the large and passionate female fanbase with the gender change, but I guess he doesn't realize that most of the women are probably into the guys.

Maybe he's just out of touch.
