Why would you expect it to sell more digitally as well? Do we have anything showing that digital trend in the manga industry follows the physical trend? We don't. I'm not denying it doesn't follow it. But neither can anyone here give any figures that state it does follow it. My comment was based on the few digital sales list we have that show a different market trend. Of course, few lists don't give the whole picture but again, my whole point was my assumption based on 2-3 lists is definitely more credible than someone assuming something based on NO list which is what people seem to do here.

My whole opinion on this has always been to NOT include digital sales into discussion until we get solid information. People cannot let that go, so here we are.

Also, not that it matters for the manga industry since you cannot say it'll follow the same trend as other industries BUT digital trend and physical trends vary A LOT in the music industry. There are many artists who don't do well in the digital market but sell way more traditional physical copies of music and vice versa. You cannot put your foot down and say the same won't apply here.
I'm not expecting Jump titles to sell more digitally, I'm expecting Jump titles to sell digital copies proportionate to their physical sales, with some exceptions. However now I see your perspective; you're saying that maybe some individual series/publishers sell terribly digitally, some sell mostly digitally, and depending on certain factors we don't know where Jump lies on that spectrum. That makes sense.

"Spectrum" is the right word. Been scratching my head for the right word.

There could be tons of factors we don't know about. It's possible one demographic prefers digital medium over the other. It's possible genre of the manga has a huge effect on which medium is preferred. Or it's literally just a random thing that follows no trend. We have zero information.

Shueisha chief said 30% sales were digital. That statement in itself is against the market trend where "digital sales overtook physical". Additionally, how much of that 30% was from WSJ? What if 1% was WSJ or 28% from WSJ?
Lack of information does not mean we should just make up a number for the sake of including it. Blindly assuming data is why businesses fail.

Also, for a lot of people like us (me included) who pick on youtubers here for spreading false information with no proof, so many seem to contradict themselves by spreading false information about digital without any evidence.

JoJo question.

When Steel Ball Run started in WSJ was it placement low in the magazine before it moved to Ultra Jump?

I understand that when it started in WSJ it was some time after Stone Ocean, and was treated as a new series
TOC placements from the first true Ranking onwards (started in Issue 8 of 2004, CPs are not included)
Issue 15 (First ranking) 6th out of 12
Issue 16 9th out of 16
Issue 17 12th out of 16
Issues 18-29 HIATUS which means the regular ranking continues in...
Issue 36 12th out of 14
Issue 37/38 14th out of 18
Issue 39 11th out of 15
Issues 40-45 HIATUS
Issue 46 Color Page
Issue 47 Unranked
Issue 48 Moves to Ultra Jump

So yeah, not really great for all the hiatuses it made. Smart choice for Shueisha.

business fail for not adapting to changing market conditions by misunderstanding trends and ignoring data.

Your statements strongly suggest and highly imply that a company ought not make any investments in the digital marketplace. Another persons post above suggests only putting content on one digital market place and ignoring all others (the comparison to STEAM and NETFLIX doesnt make sense, IE, exodus of companies leaving STEAM, NETFLIX has exclusive show content not offered elsewhere but again numerous content providers leaving the service, yet manga as compared to both those services is ubiquitous, meaning its offered on numerous platforms, it is unclear and doubtful the digital manga market is for example 95% all on one service while the other digital sellers are irrelevant and bottom feeders. It is highly suspect if someone is pushing the view that shuiesha's own digital marketplaces is not a major place of Digital sales, when, according to Revenue based charts of Apps, the Shonen Jump+ app ranks in the top 100 of 2018 for revenue).

You plan for the worst case scenario and hope for the best outcome. If you started a manga distribution company with the data we have right now with us, you don't go in assuming 60% of your revenue is gonna be digital. You go in assuming your main source of revenue will remain paper while hoping your releases end up also garnering some digital sales. If you go in expecting 60% sales revenue from digital, you will burn out faster than you would think.

If I started a manga company today, I'd go majority or 100% digital since it has lower overhead cost and offers multiple monetization schemes. Many print magazines are shuttering and many manga are going all digital. Physical is dying all around us, dude.

Shueisha literally stated 70% of their revenue was physical. Its not dying or at least not remotely as quickly as you make it seem. The market is slowly transitioning. First off, you would need butt loads more data to make any sort of decision. Based on information we have today, and by we I mean us in this forum, solely going digital is more risky than spending all your dough on lottery. We have data available for physical sales. We have none for digital. What genre or demographic would you aim for? Which platform would you choose? What sort of marketing would you follow? How you even make a decision based on such lack of information is beyond me. Paper still exists and is still doing fine. Yeah, it's transitioning but it'll take another decade or more to fully convert to digital.

The music industry still hasn't completely gone digital. Just few years ago they added streaming and YouTube view counts as sales. There would be so many more ways of income from digital that still hasn't been figured out yet.

JoJo question.

I understand that when it started in WSJ it was some time after Stone Ocean, and was treated as a new series
It had low placement for a long time, even as early as part 5 from what Ive checked but apparently it was as early as part 3 as someone pointed out.

Since low placements have been a trend for a long time it shows that SBR's move to Ultra Jump wasn't because of low placements. Im glad it moved to Ultra Jump, Araki's art-style evolved once more and his writing in SBR is arguably the best the franchise has to offer. I adore SBR a lot, its definitely a fan fav and the best part for sure.
SBR had a strong start placing in the top 10 but from chapter 9 began to decline in the ranking (also adding that the manga entered into hiatus frequently) until in chapter 23 was moved to the Ultra Jump. A wise decision.
More like SBR ranked at the bottom of the top 10 or below that even for most of its ranking. It was absent a lot of times too.

TPN sales should be interesting to watch.
Also, I don't follow the manga but wasn't it announced the current arc was the last arc in the manga?

Oh yeah? I have no idea. I remember people mentioning over here how it's in its final arc but the arc might stretch for long.

A good time to remind users that there’s an ignore option when you select a user’s name that means you won’t see their posts full stop. It can be a good problem-solver for users who can’t see eye to eye.

This needs a Jump thing to be on topic so uhhhhhh hmm.... the wait for the new issue is a killer. Like it feels like forever. I need my fix of the new series!

Jump uses "final arc" in a very loose sense. Naruto's final arc lasted over 15 volumes.

I mean, same with Bleach. That last arc was 19 volumes. It usually means there would be many mini arcs within the final major arc.

Guess it would be better to refer to them as final sagas then

Nope, it got the cover for issue 3 in 2015 and the cover for issue 9 in 2016.
If they follow the trend of the past years it will also get the cover for issue 17, as it got the covers for that particular issue 3 years in a row.
