Shoseki ranking day 1 (1-4-19):
David-kun = #66
Jimoto ga Japan = #110

It looks like while neither started out too high, David's first day was higher than Japan's, according to Shoseki's physical estimate. Side note: High Risk Mission Therapy volume 4 being #142 is criminally underrated. I'm thankful it premiered on Jump+ since that saved it from receiving an incredibly untimely ax.
Thanks for posting this! Seems like Jimoto is a certain out of bounds for Oricon and seems like it flopped to absolutely zero surprise. Ugh, I am pissed this got an anime. Ugh.

David-Kun seems like a 15-18k first week seeing the trend? Still will be very much out of bounds for Oricon sadly, not a great start for a WSJ manga. :(

Any other numbers?

Thanks for the info! That's not a very good debut for David-kun, but at least it's higher than Jimoto.
It seems the Amazon.jp ranking doesn't always reflect the total sales. I'll wait for shosekiranking and Oricon from now on.

I wouldn’t worry too much about volume sales for David and Japan, at least at first (especially with Japan). Gag manga are different beasts for magazines, usually selling less because comedy is the quickest to age, and to age poorly. Readers focus on the week to week stuff, so they’re often seen as magazine sellers than volume sellers. Look at Inumarudashi’s long run as a good recent example of a low seller that persisted forever.

That said, I do worry about David a little. Japan has its cultural sidebar each chapter as reader engagement, and the anime coming up to help it stick out, whereas David... doesn’t, and would only need a few weeks of weak jokes to fall out of favour

Just saw that David kun placed worse than for example Full Drive (58th place) on its 1st day which only earned around 4kish in sales 1st week for Volume 1. I am worried now, if that happens its done. They have Jimoto for last place gag manga for the next few years that is as buzzless as Lycopene, Isobe Isobee and Jaguar were in West. So a perfect replacement! Beyond sad, I even heard Jimoto is not a good manga at all. :(

There's not much to go on to see whether Jimoto ga Japan is a good series or not since only the first 3 chapters have been translated. Going by the raws, it actually looks kind of funny, (granted, I still don't really know much about what's going on) I think if it got a consistent translation it might have a similar level of popularity as David.

All this made me do a list of first day POC Shoseki rankings for each 2018 newbie manga. So David is in the middle, but below both flops ZIGA and Noah, eek.
- Jujutsu Kaisen 10
- Act-Age 30
- Noah's Notes 48
- ZIGA 53
- Shunshunki Renaissance David-Kun 66
- Alice to Taiyou 67
- Bozebeats 103
- Jimoto ga Japan 110
- Momiji no Kisetsu 136
- Tanaka Seiji 160
- Kimi wo Shinrayku Seyo! 184

I think both series will survive tbh, even if their sales are lower. Japan is pretty much confirmed with the anime but David to me seems safe.

Jimoto is safe until at least mid 2019, but I don't see how David has the abillity to survive this axe round or edge over things like Ne0 or Higuma even with Jimoto ready to take a permanent last place which was the point of WSJ launching double gag manga in 1 issue. Too bad we can't judge how they are doing on reader polls since WSJ decided to just flip them each issue.

Can say with some confidence from reading volume 1 just the other day that Japan is... funny, but mostly a cute sort of funny, seeing how it folds in its prefectural references. A chapter with Ōita prefecture as the focus was a good time, all hot springs and Titans and junk

Idk if i laughed out loud from the first 3 chapters, but i somewhat enjoyed Japan, where as I thought David was pretty terrible

Viz Jump is already out. Ne0;lation pages are in disorder though (only this manga has that problem)

fixed since 2/3 hours ago.

Chapter 4 was just as strong as the previous chapters. Setup was pretty amazing and this new miniarc is proving to be amazing.

Woah, this update is going to be a lot to stomach
I was having some issues on mobile where I couldn't find where to click to go to the next page. Not sure if that's because I was on an older mobile device or not.

Shoseki 1/5 (day 2):

David-kun = #119 :(
Jimoto ga Japan = #222
