Death Note might've only lasted 2 years but it;s popularity was unrivaled in those 2 years.

Also, why are people forgetting Bakuman? Bakuman was such a drastic shift from Death Note and still did incredibly well. As long as S8 has a decent story, it can do fine.
From what I've heard, Platinum End is just a horrible shit show, hence it debuting with great numbers and then falling miserably makes sense. Just like Boruto.
I mean, sure, that's true, but Samurai 8's reception hasn't been the greatest, and we're not even out of Volume 1.

How has Samurai 8 been received in Japan anyway? Is it more positive or negative, or is it kind of mixed like it is in the west?

Going off my friend in the JP community, it's basically the same as the Western reception. Some ardent defenders obsessed with Kishi exist, but most find it difficult to read due to the very cluttered art and unclear story and setting.

Well, I was referring to overall sales. But I did find it odd that Platinum End was mentioned, even though the more applicable example was Bakuman.

doesnt make sense to make comparisons to bakuman, a low stakes edutainment series for all ages with kids who cant so much as look each other without turning red faced and stuttering messes, to Platinum End with its insanely high stakes and Suicidal folk, folks dying of cancer bearing it all on the line, and some pretty lewd stuff going on, along with death, death, and guess what, more death.

I agree, no point in comparing good writing with bad writing

Don't really know what people are expecting out of Sam8. Kishi knows he has time, and he's said he's going to make use of it. His series won't make or break based on the first volume, or even two. In a year's time, I doubt anyone's even going to remember these chapters, because it'll either follow the Platinum End route and get way worse, or the Bakuman route and get way better. They're literally just a means to an end.

Wrong series (it says Business Jump). Doesn't look like it's in MAL. No Side started the same year as Jojo did.

Ah, yeah. Didn't know "no side" was a rugby term.

Found a third one that came out in 1989 (in Shonen Sunday Zokan).

Why shouldn't we expect more? The series isn't some episodic serial where readers can jump in at any time, if the content in Volume 1/2 don't appeal, then readers aren't likely to continue. All a start along the lines of Samurai 8's does in the current Jump climate is ensure that the series will have a complete lack of growth.

My uncle at Shuiesha says the reception has been fine. People are just overreacting because of the extremely high expectations.

If I recall, someone once mentioned that Sket Dance used to be dead last in the rankings or ToC. How did it get out of its bad situation?

It got better, I think it was the sick girl arc

Because SKET Dance was counted as a gag manga, and Jump tends to lop gag series in the back for whatever reason, regardless of their reception.

Sket Dance in the ToC was being ranked just like other series, sometimes it ranked really high unlike actual gag manga

Example:
Volume 47 (14-11-2011)
1. Naruto
2. One Piece
3. Sket Dance
4. Bleach
5. Gintama
6. Kuroko no Basuke
7. Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
8. Medaka Box
9. Inumarudashi
10. HunterxHunter
11. Magico
12. Kochikame
13. ST&RS
14. Beelzebub
15. Kagami no Kuni no Harisugawa
16. Nurarihyon no Mago
17. Enigma (END)

You realize that issue was a good four years into the series run, right?

Also, where's Bakuman, Jaguar and Nisekoi? That TOC looks strangely incomplete.

Also, hn, interesting how the number of manga in Jump has inflated gradually over time.
Then go back and look for older charts, it will still rank like any non gag manga

Not that my opinion matters, but here are my arbitrary thoughts on Weekly Shonen Jump series:
One Piece: Can't say I'm enjoying this current arc so far, but I did like the latest chapter to an extent. I hope Oda picks up the pace!
Hunter x Hunter: Pls come back. I seriously miss you!
My Hero Academia: I feel like I'm forcing myself to read, but maybe I'll like this current arc more when the anime adapts it.
Black Clover: Although very generic, I'm glad I stuck with it because the current arc has been fun for me.
Kimetsu no Yaiba: I think the worldbuilding is just really awkward to me, but I genuinely love the characters and a lot of the action. I hope it isn't actually in the final arc because it's so great and could go on for much longer, but it is what it is.
The Promised Neverland: I think this series peaked with its first arc, but I still like it somewhat.
Dr. Stone: Bad first arc, but it really came around once Chrome and his village got introduced, and it's just been consistently entertaining for me. Nothing special though.
Act-Age: It can be slow at times, but I haven't stopped loving this series since it started serialization.
Jujutsu Kaisen: I think it's ooookay. I like that it can be violent.
Chainsaw Man: I think this series is utterly insane, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the vibe it gives off, and I'm on the edge of my seat right now.
The Last Saiyuki: I just find this series very boring. Almost fell asleep drooling. I did like the first chapter, but it's lost me since then. I don't know if it can win me over, but I hope it finds its footing because it does seem interesting.
Yui Kamio Lets Loose: I actually don't dislike this series. I don't exactly like it either, but I'm surprisingly following it along quite easily.
Samurai 8: I'm having a lot of trouble following along. I don't know what it is, but it kinda hurts my eyes to read it. I don't know if it's the art or whatever. Maybe it's the fact that I'm reading off of the Viz app on my phone, but I find myself sort've skimming through everything regarding this series. I know it's only been three chapters so far, but I have the impression I'm probably better off just waiting for an anime adaptation in two years (or less. I'm sure you guys have a better idea).
Double Taisei: That plot twist in chapter two did surprise me, but I don't know how long a manga like this can last. Personally, I can't get into the art style.
Beast Chiildren: An okay opening chapter. Hope it gets better.

If I didn't mention any other ongoing WSJ series, it's because I don't read it.

I'm interested in what you think about old legendary Jump titles, similar way RingoRoadOnceMore has done of current series.

I would ask your opinion for this series:
-Kinnikuman
-Captain Tsubasa
-Fist of the North Star
-Dragon Ball
-City Hunter
-Saint Seiya
-Yu Yu Hakusho
-Slam Dunk
-Kenshin (please, comment is as a series. Let's try to forget the ''Watsuki is a pedo'' here)
-Yu-Gi-Oh!
-Prince of Tennis (the forgotten Jump spokon despite having sold more than Kuroko no Basket or Haikyuu)
-Hitman Reborn
-Toriko
-Kuroko no Basket

Extra titles: Otoko Ippiki, Mazinger Z (it debuted on Jump), Kochikame, Ring ni Kakero, Cobra, Sakigake Otokojuku, Rokudenashi Blues, Video Girl Ai, Dragon Quest Dai no Daiboken, NuBe, Sexy Commando Masaru-san, Hoshin Engi, I''s, Hikaru no Go, Eyeshield21

I ignored JoJo since is a strange case of an old title which gets tons of talk currently.
