The fact that Denji is leading the poll is both funny and kinda sad. Like I love Denji, but seriously?
He has the most down to earth, relatable motivations of any MC in Jump currently.

He doesn't care about being a Pirate King, or a Magic Emperor, or saving the universe, etc. He cares about the small joys in life. He cares about what a heterosexual teenager his age would care about, girls.

Plus, the latest chapter definitely cemented his heroic side, as well as his newfound battle savvy.

Feels very much like TPN is still riding partly on the hype from the first arc. I felt the same, it carried me for a while, but around the time of the Goldy Pond Arc, I just didn't feel like reading the series anymore and have put it on hold ever since.
I agree with you. For me, Neverland has a amazing first arc and a amazing final arc (at least until now) and some not-so-amazing moments in-between. I enjoy Goldy Pond, for example, but the weekly pacing wad terrible. You need to read it in one-go, it's impossible to read it as a weekly series.

Deku has obviously got a lot of common battle shonen protagonist archetypes going on ; he's aggressively empathetic, self-sacrificing to a fault, and every character he interacts with finds themselves drawn to him. Nearly all the protags of the "big" shonen mangas have these traits. Luffy, Naruto, Gon.

The big thing that makes Deku feel different? He's smart.

90% of shonen protagonists, particularly the most popular ones, are impulsive dumbasses. Incredibly likeable impulsive dumbasses, but Luffy/Naruto/Gon are all kind of stupid and act on instinct. They're cunning, sure, and can figure out clever ways to win a fight, but they are absolutely not the puzzle solvers of the group. Deku, on the other hand, is incredibly analytical and tackles every challenge with strategy and observation. In fact, one of his weaknesses is that he'll often overthink a situation and be unable to react in time. It might feel like a small discrepancy, but it makes a lot of big battles and sequences play out very differently than they would in One Piece or Naruto.

His interactions with the rest of the cast also feel unique because his personality is such a contrast from those other characters. Instead of being loud, brash, and having an inflated sense of self-importance, Deku is pretty much the opposite. He's meek, overly polite, and has some big self-esteem issues that he wears on his sleeve (instead of big self esteem issues that he constantly represses, like everyone else). So there's a lot about Deku that's familiar, but the things about him that are new/uncommon to a protagonist in the genre make him feel really refreshing. I like him a lot.
Good grief, it's been so long since we've seen Deku fight for real that I forgot about what sets him apart from other Shonen protags.

Also, Deku's habit of overthinking things a fair bit might be something Endeavor help with. During the High-End fight, we saw Enji quickly analyzing and breaking down its abilities just like Deku would, but he's a fair bit more intuitive than Deku (although he also has the advantage of over 25 years of hero service). So that's definitely an area of improvement for him.

We are actually 12 pages ahead of the number we need. The 1000 pages are almost locked

So like every JoJo protags starting from part 2, the GOAT Taikobou, Gon is stupid in every other aspect except in battle. Greed Island, Heavenly Arc, Hunter Exam.

Deku just restart the trend from 20 years ago.

Code:
1000 ÷ 365 ≈ 2.74

(date below kinda depends on which time zone you are in, so.. +/-1)
10 Sep 2019 = 31+28+31+30+31+30+31+31+10 = 253

253 * 2.74 = 693

if 252 then 690

Still, that is a long time for something to feel fresh again. Nothing is truly original anymore.

Tanjirou is the best MC for me in a long time. A lot of people tell stories how 'Goku' or 'Naruto' were inspiring characters to them but i could never really relate to that. The only character maybe a bit inspiring for me, might be Luffy because of how free he chooses his life to live but other than that, i never really had a figure like that. Tanjirou is the first character which fulfills that role to me because of how much compassion he has and generally what a good human being he is. It makes me wish that someday hopefully i reach this kind of pureness and determination as him. He is a character that makes me want to try harder in my own life.
So yeah, definitely Tanjirou.

I'd say Deku's meek and shy personality is a much more distinguishable trait than his intelligence. There are plenty of smart MCs and even guys like Luffy and Asta are smarter than they seem in more ways than one. But you don't see many that are so subdued.

Deku's personality in a nutshell is that he's a nerd. I can't think of a lot of other main characters you can call that.

Eh, he's supposed to be smart, but he suffers a lot from "smart character, not-smart artist". Most of his "strategies" aren't really that good. Combine that with his underdog-Jump-protagonist status, and it feels like the few things he does do "smart" barely make a difference anyway.

For me personally, looking at the list, it's, like, wow, I'm usually more a fan of side characters anyway, but geez there aren't any that really make me go "wow, this guy makes the series". I guess I kinda default to Tanjiro? He's likeable and generally pretty effective.

I mean, Senku is actually smart, not just smart for an MC. I'd argue that Emma is also smarter than Deku.

I get the overall point, though.

Senku's intelligence is unrealistic. He is smarter than every single Nobel prize winner combined and his intelligence is something he supposedly earned himself just by studying. It's more akin to a superpower.

Sure, but this is a series where a good fighter can knock out a lion with a punch. I don't think it's meant to be super realistic.

You think being able to remember things is a superpower?

I'd say he's a whole lot more realistic than your average fiction scientist, considering most of them are creating time machines and stuff.

The two new mangas arent doing anything for me. Sorry. Better luck next round.

Will continue to bet on Tokyo Shinobi Squad. Thailand boy representation in manga is more needed, go. And Jin and Denki kaminari need to be in the same manga.

Kamio Yui is the new Medaka Box
At least Medaka had the sales going for it right from the beginning.

24 hours have passed, let's talk about the new chapters.

Both Double Taisei and Beast Children are overdoing it a bit on the symbolic & phylosophical stuff. DT almost reminded me of YGO.

Samourai 8 is still spewing exposition. Also that new guy's gimmick was only funny once before it got annoying.

TTS was good. It's nothing groundbreaking, but I do enjoy reading it every week. I'm wondering if that Area 51 joke was in the Japanese version or if they used some other mystery there that isn't known in the West.

Yui Kamio is... um... well, at least we got plot progress.

WNL: ... Are all Japanese people so superstituous or is this weird even for them?

Yozakura is interesting. And surprisingly realistic given the setting.

Mitama on the other hand is going to get very boring very fast if they keep this up.

Act-age was nice too, but a bit slow. It's good to see Death Island mentioned again.

Black Clover chose to keep this plot point for later and to expand their horizon. This isn't ending any time soon. (Also somebody please kill Gauche.)

Dr. Stone is suddenly speeding right into the climax of the arc! So many revelations & new mysteries, I love it.

Neverland is also moving further into the climax. Funny how both this and Dr. Stone have excellent chapters that don't (or barely) have the main character in them.

Haikyu's entire chapter consisted of one rally. It's very exiting, but at this rate they're gonna need another five volumes just to finish this match. And they still managed to work in a cliffhanger at the end.

Hero Academia is taking a breather, probably after finishing up an arc. I'm quite behind on the series (since I only read the printed English volumes), but this seems like a good place to pick up.

What I would vote if I lived in Japan:
1. Dr. Stone
2. Neverland
3. TSS

Senku and Emma are both super smart, but their debuts were both a good 2+ years after MHA started. It might be worth arguing that Deku helped WSJ realize that an intelligent and/or nerdy protagonist could be likeable to a wide audience, and that may have partially paved the way for characters like Senku and Emma to be protagonists instead of just side characters.
