Jeez. The one-two days I'm not active and we get 15 pages of discussion.

So while we were thinking KNY topped OP, WSJ's staff were going "Mada Mada" and pulled a twist that would make M. Night Shyamalan proud?

Imma just wait for actual charts to come out.

There's no incentive for Shuiesha to stretch to truth especially since these numbers are coming officially from them and Oricon is just another source and doesn't actually cover everything and has been wrong from time to time. All this is going to lead is people pushing to whichever source that aligns with them and hoping not to hinge too much on guessimates all the time.

Shueisha could be trustworthy if they aren't contradicting themselves with their past statement.
After all, corporate are just humans who scheme and have no obligation to be honest all the time.

I recalled a recent article in which One Piece editor 'begged' people who fallen out of One Piece to read Wano arc and talked about how great this new arc is which I disagree, but whatever. If KnY actually beated OP in sale, it would clash head on with that narrative of the editor.
There is undeniable trend slowly dwindling of One Piece sales year by year (despite still being the first for more than a decade). So maybe, maybe Shueisha want One Piece keep being on top with that announcement.
But all of those above is just my own baseless theory.
Anyway, I don't like the idea of One Piece keep dominating the manga world. To me, it symbolises the stagnant of Jump and the whole industry in general. I would never introduce something as gigantic as One Piece to a newcomer.
You just took the words right out of my mouth. For me, OP is the symbol of an era that lived on for too long. If Jump really is being disingenuous with OP's sales, then that just shows how terrified they are of losing OP, even though it's their job to bring up the new generation to prepare for OP's end. Instead of worrying about OP's end, they should be more worried about finding a new mangaka that can uphold the magazine in the future. Given the recent flops and the few successes in-between, it's clear they haven't been seriously developing and curating new talent, and is just throwing whatever.

There's nothing contradictory in this article also Oricon has a history of making mistakes and their data landscape is actually much more limited in comparison since the don't include digital and only use select bookchains to get their data.

They're contradicting their own statements of Kimetsu's circulation. Considering how it's been frequently sold out, I can't imagine it had 20mil copies in circulation a couple days after the cut-off but only sold about half of that.

Imagine an interview with Kimetsu announcing it's the best-selling manga of the year.

And Nakano just looking at the camera like a guy trying to date two girls at the same time in a sitcom.

Guess it also comes down to what they think is more desirable for long term.

1. OP being on top for over a decade with 3+ million initial print is a marketing push and is a way to get some people who fell off OP to go "Damn, it's still so high? Maybe I'll get back into it again". Meaning, some extra attention for their prime series that MIGHT boost its sales a bit.

2. KnY topping OP will give it probably unprecedented attention for being the first series in over 15 ish years to outsell OP in a year. But given how KnY is "supposedly" in its final arc, would this attention just be a waste when Shueisha and Jump consider the long term picture?

It really depends on which narrative they want to go with. They can twist facts as much as they want to fit either of the above since they can say its the numbers they have "internally" and no one can technically counter them.

Maybe that article was a response to that tweet where a jap posted the numbers from Oricon and said op was dethroned. That tweet got over 100k likes. Who knows, it's kinda convenient to release that report when it's only days left for Oricon to post their charts.

Had Shuesha published this article after Oricon numbers, would it still get the same reception and criticism?

The article literally says that the 10 million print came from the month of September. 20 million includes everything and was only revealed last week. This actually happened with series like BC which went up in circulation by a million a volume later after it was initially revealed that it was 8 million in print. Remember circulation numbers is not the same as sales figures.

Whichever is the most sold series means it has more exposition. It's not the same for advertisers to choose between a series that has had the first spot for years or a series that just surpassed that one in order to make a collaboration. And of course, it's not the same income depending on which series they choose.

If we were to list the amount of reasons Shueisha would find more profitable to keep having OP as the most sold series every year, we could probably keep discussing until New Year's. But numbers will come earlier, so I'll just wait.

Quite sure people have said Oricon are only estimates and have been off when compared to publisher numbers for manga, anime, LN, etc

That is to say, the same conversations would still happen.

Shueisha is definitely contradicting themselves. They announced a week ago it has 20 million copies in circulation so there's no way they overprinted because it was often out of stocks in shops.

There is only one suitable answer: Nakano has mastered the art of equivalent exchange, transformed all those unsold S8 volumes into freshly printed KnY volumes, or even better, printed at least 6m KnY copies out of thin air, right before the circulation announcement.

im confused about your point. isnt 20 mln lifetime, and the number shuiesha said just the number sold in in 1 yr, What number are you using to subtract out how much KnY sold for this year?

as been stated multiple times in this thread 20 million is franchise sales so it would include LNs and I think the spin-offs

That is a huge issue with OP and also the reason for its slow decline.
People wont start reading a 900 chapter manga from scratch, its very hard to get into OP nowadays due to sheer size so naturally the only way to go is down.
Hence why I do believe in the claims that OP will end in around 5 years, Jump just needs to find a replacement at this stage.

Are you sure about that? Early volumes of one piece still rank decently on AMZN jp (kindle).
