Tame in what regard?
I edited it in later, but I mean in terms of content. There's not really any violence outside of the cartoonishly exagerated type, and there isn't any ecchi type stuff.

Undead seems to be the type of series that a brand new author tries out just to get his/her foot in within the mag. Tests some ideas out and gathers a small following by showing his/her potential. Then after acquiring the experience, they come back with the series he/she was really eager to write for the mag.

I really think Kimetsu was supposed to be this type of series from Goutoge. But she caught lighting in a bottle and the sudden explosion in popularity became unprecedented for her that she had to continue it and for the better.

Was that even a requirement to vote?

Anyways the fact that the first place is a relatively minor character and over-the-top bishonen parody like Cavendish instead of any of the other One Piece characters with legit armies of fangirls like Ace and Law says it all about how seriously we should take this poll.
I would assume so...

The MangaPlus interview with KnY's editor showed a lack of confidence at some points of the creative process, but as a whole that is really not the impression it gave, afterall Gotoge had already made multiple different one shots before the serialization. Also the editor referred to the author as a "he", while other interviews with similarly secretive authors as their subjects used "they". Make of that what you will...

That's just translation. Gotoge, per the anime director, doesn't want to actually disclose their gender.

I assumed so. It's just weird how it was the only one that didnt try to keep that ambiguous.

The translations on M+ for the interviews are very poor quality so I'm not surprised. Compare them to the interviews Viz has conducted with Tabata and Inagaki and the difference in quality is obvious.

Which reminds me a lot of people didnt tru out samurai 8bcsudr they didnt like Naruto
I don't think people not liking Naruto would impede on S8. Mostly because anyone who hated the series to that point is most likely in a very vocal minority.

The problem is just that S8 itself failed to garner interest.

Naw it gives off the "starter mangaka" vibe to me as well. Still does. I think if it were her personal life's work she would have planned a far larger scale with more themes and multiple factions, or at least create characters that are completely iconic, do her own thing completely.
I don't see her as someone whose end goal is to create a great shonen which is what she's done, I see her as someone who wants to create a great story. Can't explain why. Feel free to treat this as headcanon

Samurai 8 is still hanging in there at the very bottom... Where was it at this point for volumes 1 and 2?

Nice to see that Haikyuu backlog, watching the new season has me wanting to start reading the manga, maybe when this cour is over.

This could either mean BC has longer legs or JJK is being affected by stock issues since it is already getting reprints. BC still will sell less within a month though (and within the fiscal year).

Also you should really pick HQ back up, this last arc looks very promising.

In fact, S8 3 already dropped out of the top 500 once on the 17th but managed to go back on the 18th and 19th. Still, it's very likely we won't be seeing it in the top 500 anymore soon.

That doesn't sound quite right.

The "sudden burst in popularity" came at a really late point in the manga and it doesn't even seem to have altered her plans in the slightest (at the time there were still a bunch of things she could have done to setup the story in a way that it would've been possible to extend it, but Gotouge still chose to head towards what looks like an inevitably quick conclusion).

Other than that Kimetsu was a niche series that slowly and steadily gathered a fanbase as it went on. By the time it became even moderately successful it was already around the train arc (which is good) and the RLD arc (which is great).

I wouldn't say KnY wasn't the kind of story she wanted to write, I would say it simply came at a lucky time where the author was actually allowed to grow along the way. Even though I do agree Gotouge probably didn't expect to be.

Christ, and Vol 1 and 2 were able to last almost the entirety of October. So much for squid chewing.

Reading the last couple of posts, a thought had occured to me that I wanted to run by everyone.

KnY is definitely a great series, with good characters/fights, etc. However, would you say any of the characters in it are iconic?

20 years after the series is over, do you think people will still be talking about it or the characters? Does the series leave a lasting impression?

Nezuko and Inosuke, at least? Inosuke has even been adopted as a symbol of Chilean political protest, weird as it is to say.

Still, I don't think having "iconic" characters is really necessary. As long as Kimetsu remains a work of fiction that changed people, that's all it needs to be.

I think a few characters like Tanjirou, Inousuke and Nezuko will probably be remembered in the future. It helps that KNY's designs are simple yet very recognizable and the characters have traits that make them loved by the public. As for the series, it will be probably be remembered too, both the anime and manga are absolutely huge, we haven't seen an impact like KNY's since SNK.

I wasn't asking whether it was necessary or not, though. That's a different debate entirely.
