I wonder.
If KNY was a long running series, would WSJ have the guts to replace Luffy with Tanjiro? Especially since OP is the 2nd best selling series currently per volume (So weird to say this, LOL. For some reason I thought OP would remain the best selling manga every year till it ended. Such weird times.)
Anyway, my point was it's not like Kochikame which reduced in sales so much that it wasn't even a decent seller anymore. So, would WSJ still have the guts to replace Luffy with Tanjiro in the hypothetical scenario that KNY was a long running series?
I was actually expecting to see Tanjiro and Luffy as two extremely big position characters followed by everyone else for this current issue. Low key surprised WSJ didn't do that but I guess it's also expected given how it is ending.

I'm intrigued to see what the author comments would be like more than the tribute drawings.
It depends on how long it could hold that level of sales for. If it kept outselling OP in individual volumes for 2-3 years and proved its stability, that'd be where they make the change in "face of the magazine", probably. Although I do think they could've had Tanjiro and Luffy share the front for its last appearance.
True but it's also the slow progress backwards and the less than stellar average TOC placements. It's average TOC placements is the worst among all established series aside from Yuuna (I think), so far this year.
It was the worst out of the veterans (except Yuuna) until this week. AA's average score lowered enough for them to swap spots, though it's still very close to BC. BC's average placement has dropped considerably when compared to last year when it was #5 with an average score of 6.68 at the end of the year. It ranked in the mid-high share of the ToC for most of 2019, while it has ranked mostly in the mid-low share this year.
So, it really seems twitter Japan will explode with this chapter and the next one. I can definitely see some mangaka from other mag and this one drawing KnY's characters as a tribute.

They should have just put Tanjiro and Luffy in the same size but chickened out.. This to me seems like they wouldn't have ever placed Tanjiro bigger than Luffy in double issue covers for what's left of One Piece's serialization (around 4 more years based on interviews... but with how Oda has been getting more and more breaks maybe it's gonna last longer).
There are some covers from like the early 2000s where Luffy wasn't the bigger character in the covers, he was accompanied by other characters like Hikaru from hikaru no go, or Naruto and they had the same size, there were even some covers were Ryotsu from Kochikame was the bigger character (early 2000s IIRC or maybe even late 90s). So I guess they were going by seniority with Ryotsu.. And also Kochikame must have been the biggest seller at the time (not sales per volume, but total manga sales).
But after 2011 (The year One Piece broke it's now broken record) Luffy was always the biggest character. And from the looks of it Shueisha will just continue that tradition until OP ends.
I mean, a single Q Posket figurine of Nezuko for example is listed for 4,700 Yen on Amazon currently, a Tanjiro figurine is listed for a similar price.
5,200 Yen for a book with four figurines included actually sounds like a very good deal, considering figurine prices in general
(unless the figurines included are some super low quality versions, but I don't think that's it.)
I don't actually buy figurines, but there is one I would absolutely buy, with an obscene price tag to it if I recall: A Kyuubi/Kurama Figurine crafted by a well-known artisan whose works usually goes up thousands of dollars, I heard.
Count me to the group that's glad that UU up a bit and it is getting a CP. Abou time. Now AB needs a CP and all is good. GotW seems to be next on the axe block, only question is if it loses its head before or after the 19th chapter. Shame about AA being so low and surprisingly high position for WNL, people seem to like this arc more than I thought.
Given that the rumour of the Gotouge situation is spreading more and more, please everyone that uses/watch this thread, dont spread it further more because it came from a uncertain gossip magazine and could be only made to use the popularity of the series and the author to spark controversy or attention.
@Rain Spectre this goes specially for you, given that you are being used as a source for people in Twitter and this could be most likely fake, so its better to stop the misinformation right now, given that the series is ending and people are clinging to this rumour to give a reasoning on why it is ending.

Think back then One Piece was still fairly new (5-6 years), so it's legacy/importance to WSJ was up in the air. I remember seeing a joint cover where Ichigo and Naruto were sorta bigger than Luffy or given just better positions overall.
So yeah, definitely think it was a lot easier for them to interchange some positions back then with Luffy.
Ryotsu's placements since 00s has almost always been because of seniority I believe and because it was a top selling series of all time.
A wild Toriko makes an appearance in one of these covers :P

I'm fairly certain this is the same trend that Toriko started to follow after it's movie release (which I still think was the last effort from WSJ to push it). Beelzebub as well. But I'm too lazy to go back and verify.
Speaking of the rumor around Gotoge, about the supposed reasons why she finished the manga, it never ceases to amaze me how badly accustomed we are to a author taking the liberty to finish his work when he wants, how he wants, despite the fact that he's at its peak.
This is just a reflection of how badly accustomed we are to seeing so many manga continue simply because they are successful, because they do not know when to stop, and above all because they yield to pressure from their editors.
And now that we have for once an author who finishes his work when and how she wants, with the freedom that everyone should have, we are surprised, we feed rumors and we even condemn the end of this manga.
This is the "level" that I will never understand. Until further information, the author put an end to her work when she wanted. Everything else does not go beyond mere expeculation.
I think that more than a problem of manga, fans and authors, it is a problem of social behavior.
In general we do not know when to say enough is enough in various parameters of our life. So when someone does, we are surprised.
I’m sure we’ll get some kind of confirmation on whether or not they’ll be back in the final chapter’s author comments, or if not then, some type of comments in the final volume.
Maybe something along the lines of “thanks for reading and supporting. I’ll try not to be gone too long”.
