Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Do you think they would ever let someone from the west make a manga in the magazine as long as they have perfect japanese or something?

If I was to pick a foreigner to make a manga in WSJ it would be SIU though.
They probably would, they said. If it is the case remains to be seen, I guess.

Do you have plans to publish foreign artists in Jump?

That possibility is definitely there. The quality of manga overseas has become so good. There are cases where the art is almost indistinguishable from what you'd see from a Japanese manga. We already have Korean artists who live in Japan drawing for Jump. We'd love to increase the foreign representation more and more. The only hurdle is language. Our inability to communicate well in other languages is frustrating for us, since we'd love to nurture foreign talent. Everyone in the world, please bring us your interesting manga!

Oh that is so freaking cool. Thank you so much my guy 🙏🏾
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

while it was just a contest they did allow anyone from around the world to submit a one-shot as long as it was in Japanese, English, Korean or Chinese back in 2015/2016 https://sojapan.jp/2015/12/manga-shonen-jump-is-now-accepting-international-manga-submissions/

I guess this was technically Jump+ rather than WSJ though.
Thanks again as well

Read this week chapters (still deciding the votes) but some points:

-Second chapter of Agravity Boys was nice, maybe better than the first? i don't know but i have a feeling that the manga will not be the failure many expects to be, unless the story goes down the drain very quickly.

-Third chapter of Zipman was nice but maybe thats the problem, i see plenty of people liking and etc but it feels so much "axe bait", like that manga that you enjoy but it's so obvious that will flop because it lacks a "wow" factor, but if thats something i enjoyed in this chapter 3 was the interactions between the two brothers, for me the best part and the final page was cool.

-Yozakura was like i supected, i enjoyed the chapter, sorry guys, the Popoppo guy and his parrot are just so funny, but i get the complains and the "it needs a serious arc", i'm curious to see what will happen next since it seems like the author is done with the Popoppo guy for now, probably he will focus in the family.

-Mitama Secureity was very good, it's interesting because despite being a gag i feel like the author just make the perfect set up for a more serious/action plot in the future with the "Body" introduction, and sometimes the manga feels more like a serious manga than a gag.

-This last 2 chapters of Stone's spinoff were more enjoyable than the original manga in my opinion but i think Boichi was a little over the top in the last one, we even had alien dragon lol

Wait why?
I rather not explain why. This topic was discussed in the 2019 thread and ended up being a shit show with some user raging & accusing me of being a racist over my preference/opinion. You're free to go to the ToC 2019 thread and see my response. It hasnt changed and probably will never.

Anyway we already discussed this topic about foreign artist in last year's thread so I dont see the need to bring it up again. It was discussed pretty extensively too

Oh I never noticed it in that thread. I probably missed that discussion. Do you remember what page your comment was in? This is interesting 🙂

Don't they have 2 openings after the cancellation of Beast Children and TSS?
Next issue after this one is a double, if anything happens will be in the preview for #8

Do you think they would ever let someone from the west make a manga in the magazine as long as they have perfect japanese or something?
I mean, they serialized Boichi and he doesn't really speak Japanese according to himself in a Dr Stone QA

Z=12: Japanese for foreign mangaka
How did Boichi learn to speak and write in Japanese? Muktar Yusuf
When I moved to Japan, I couldn’t speak any Japanese.

Konnichiwa(Good morning), Arigatou gozaimas(Thank you very much)… these were all I could speak in public.
But even then, I chose not to study Japanese and live in Japan without being able to speak it.
Of course when living in Japan, you definitely need to study and speak Japanese. I know that.
But I once asked a question to myself.

“Do Japanese readers want TO MEET a foreigner mangaka who can speak Japanese well, be funny and charming when speaking, or do they want TO READ a manga drawn by a foreigner mangaka who can’t speak Japanese but can draw fun and exciting manga well?”
I believe they’d choose the later one.

[...]

I first saw Japanese manga at the age of fifteen, and when I started to read Shonen Jump, I was already twenty one years old.
It was too late of a start when compared to Japan’s aspiring mangaka.
So if I decided to spend my precious time learning Japanese, there will be no way to make a better manga competing with those monstrously talented mangaka in Japan.
  • To study basic living Japanese, a year
  • To speak and communicate in Japanese with Japanese manga editors in the meeting, 3 years
  • To write my own story 100% in Japanese, 5 years
If I spent so much times studying Japanese, I’d have that much less time to study and draw my own manga.
With these calculations, I decided to become a foreign mangaka who can’t speak Japanese but a mangaka able to draw a manga that Japanese readers want to read.
This is why I chose not to study Japanese.

But actually I can speak a little Japanese nowadays!!!
I’m working with Japanese staff, so my Japanese speaking skill is slowly getting better.

Perhaps this is an off topic question, but with a new chapter and volume of Jojolion coming very soon, a question just dawned on me.
Why is it that Jojolion is still being published under the Jump Comics label, even though it's an Ultra Jump series? Isn't the Jump Comics label exclusive to titles published in WSJ? Bastard!! also still has the Jump Comics label, despite also being "published" in Ultra. Is there any reason for this?

All series published under the "Jump" banner have the "Jump comics" seal. That includes series from Weekly Shonen Jump, Jump+, Jump SQ, Young Jump, Ultra Jump and Grand Jump.

Young Jump actually has YJC seal not JC seal. Honestly it's probably Branding since they put One Punch Man in Young Jump magazine (I know it's actually publish for free on the web), and it has JC seal not YJC seal.

And Ultra Jump circulation is sub 36,000/month, making it no point making another brand.

most seinen stuff I've seen is listed under "Young Jump Comics" (Here's the label page on Bookwalker: https://bookwalker.jp/label/866/?order=release&qlab=866 and an example of the Kingdom cover where you can see YJC in the top of the spine

Actually, those different magazines have their own labels. Jump + has their own JUMP COMICS + label, Young Jump has their own Young Jump Comics label, Square has it's own Jump Comics SQ label, Ultra Jump's titles are usually published under Young Jump Comics, etc. I'm wondering why Jojolion still has the Jump Comics label even though it never touched WSJ.

I imagine since the series was in WSJ for its first 18 years.
