Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Exactly, Viz didn't pick up Yuuna presumably because they didn't want to get their hands dirty (them doing that always rubbed me the wrong way), yet look what this series did right of the bat.
Or they just thought Yuuna wouldn't sell and then the license got snatched away. Or they just hesistated for too long and the license got snatched away. I doubt there was an active decision here in the vein of "Oh no, this manga is too dirty, we will deliberately not pick this up!"

Can we stop quite literally judging books by heir covers please? We just had this whole same thing with people getting all offended about Agravity Boys before release but then it came out and it was fine, and is one of the best received new series here recently.

Sure, maybe it'll be a manga all about girls being sexually assualted, but just wait and see what it's actually like first instead of judging based an image meant specifically to catch as much attention as it can.
That's why I'm just waiting for the first chapters instead of guessing how bad the manga can get. I dont disagree on a few points people say here imo but also agree, we just have to wait.

So in your opinion that cover is meant to attract girls readers or not?
Of course not, when I mentioned that those stories aimed at girls usually have more handsome guys, I wanted to imply that it is not the same.

However, it seems that many girls have some tolerance for that behavior when it happens to fictional characters (it also depends on the tone the story uses to address the issue).

So, I don't think this manga puts into question that a good part of the audience in the WSJ are women.

Honestly I didn't care about the oneshot and this certainly doesn't change my mind, but it is very telling that the author chose to do this.

This is the first thing the reader will see about the series, and it's its heroine being groped. Certainly doesn't bode well for the character, I guess.

I'm not gonna comment on that CP. People will just get defensive and throw a "what about...". So, no point really. We will see how it does.
How in the hell Yaiba was able to sell 12 million copies in only 2 months? The manga will obliterate One Piece in December and even take the volumes too where OP was supposed to be unbeatable as a 2 million seller. I wonder if Shueisha will start to promote Yaiba as the new manga number 1 in Japan this year or just pretend that OP is at the top as always

Maybe, but the fact that they also didn't licence To Love Ru/Darkness and World's End Harem leads me to believe that they deliberately pass on that type of series. They probably only carried Bokuben because it's quite tame.

Regarding the Undead Unlucky thing, like somebody said the FMC design is nice and the art looks pretty fun, tho I’m gonna keep full judgement until the chapter drops, but I’ll have to agree that the LCP does give quite the first impression being One of the first things that introduces the series

Just because Jump has a big female audience doesn't mean every single series is gonna have one.

But don't you see how serializing and promoting such a series would be alienating to female readers?
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Also, seeing some arguing with "it looks like she is enjoying it" is some off the charts red flag incel esque behavior. It doesn't even look like she's enjoying it first of all, and such an argument is such a logical and moral leap regardless.

Yes, Jump and the shonen demographic is full of lazy content like this so I'm not surprised its being serialized. Just that some of these attempts at defending it are mind-boggling and really show off the true colors of some.

Maybe? But in any case I doubt they'd be enraged enough to stop buying jump to be up-to-date with their KnY, HeroAca, Haikyuu or whatever they actually want to read.

They may still buy the magazine, but it doesn't seem very respectful to sow a feeling of discomfort for a sizable segment of readers.

You are assuming all women will be uncomfortable about this image, which isn't necessarily the case.

This is exactly why I mentioned the topic about the smut thing directed to woman.

I wasn't trying to say this image was directed toward women. However, this kind of behavior existed in manga directed to women and many don't feel uncomfortable about this.

Accepting it due to a history of psychological conditioning through media and culture doesn't mean it's something they are comfortable seeing. If anything this conditioning is the problem that makes people argue "it isn't so bad" as it desensitizes young readers to the seriousness of sexual assault. Resulting in both higher offender rates, and issues with victims coming to terms with their trauma when everyone in their culture just brushes it off and expects them to get over it as if it were no big deal.

Honestly, I always think this argument put too much responsability in a fictional work, not enough in our society problems.

To be clear, the smut manga directed to women that use this kind of style is something a good amount of female readers should enjoy (or wouldn't exist).

The CP of Undead Unluck is directed to men, but it won't necessarily make a lot of women uncomfortable.

To tell the truth not only women but some men feel uncomfortable and don't want read manga where MC is some perv who grab women at boobs.
To be honest, at first, I was pretty uncomfortable when I read these situations in manga directed to men or women. Overall, I was uncomfortable with the excessive fanservice.

However, since I wanted to enjoy manga and anime, I had to learn to tolerate most of this (not all). I even enjoy some things.

That said, that doesn't mean I don't know the difference between fantasy and reality.

Fiction and non-fiction can both absolutely desensitize people to certain things and create societal problems.
Not that extreme content shouldn't exist or be censored. The nature of art is to elicit emotional reactions from people. However, are we forgetting the fact that this is a KIDS MAGAZINE? Arguing that pornographic material is also made for adult women doesn't change the reality that there will be young girls reading this as well being taught that having their chest violently groped is no big deal and also funny. This isn't a seinen or adult magazine.
It's a huge cultural problem in Japan that kids and subsequently adults are so desensitized to the seriousness of sexual assault.

Personally I don't find the issue in that cp, I have seen plenty of those things in other manga/anime and even worse. So I think you just have to wait until Sunday to see what's going on, same happened with AG. :oh

No, they pretty clearly did make an active decision along those lines. For years they never picked up To Love-ru or To Love-ru Darkness, despite their success in Jump and Jump SQ. Eventually when Viz began their "Jump Start" thing that translated the first three chapters of each series starting in WSJ, they notably skipped some ecchi heavy series, starting with skipping Lady Justice while doing the rest of the batch. When Yuuna and Kimetsu no Yaiba started in early 2016, Kimetsu had it's inital chapters translated as part of Jump Start while Yuuna did not. Finally in 2017 Seven Seas licensed TLR and TLR:Darkness in April. In July Viz licensed only Kimetsu no Yaiba despite both it and Yuuna having survived in Jump. Then months later in October, Seven Seas announced it's new Ghost Ship imprint while announcing that it licensed Yuuna and World's End Harem(which launched a few months after Yuuna and Viz had ignored entirely despite being one of Jump+'s successes).

All in all there's a pretty clear pattern of Viz avoiding licensing or translating heavily ecchi series, even if the series is successful in Japan or would normally receive a trial translation as part of another policy. I don't buy that they hesitated for too long either seeing as they announced they officially picked up Kimetsu months before Seven Seas announced it officially picked up Yuuna, when Kimetsu started one issue after Yuuna. Especially not after they "hesitated" for so long for TLR. That they thought it wouldn't sell isn't much of an argument either, seeing as Seven Seas clearly thought those series would(other than Lady Justice which failed in Japan and has yet to be licensed by anyone), and would appear to be correct seeing as they've been steadily releasing them.

So yeah, I'm certain there was a policy of avoiding the series with too much fan service. Which may or may not have changed with the advent of Mangaplus+. Bokuben's no measure as it's first chapters made it clear it was going to be more like Nisekoi than TLR in terms of fan service. Undead Unluck might be an indicator, but it remains to be seen going forward if it's going more for ecchi or more for comedy.

I just asked what you people would say if she was enjoying it. Not saying you where directing that at me, but just incase you where... 🤷🏾‍♂️
