Re: poll, unless he teams up with an artist in the next 5 years, no. Or if it does end, it won't be a satisfying one.

Can someone remind me what is actually going on with Togashi? I remember something about health problems, but what kind of problems?
As some have mentioned, recurring back pain ever since YYH.

Author comment for Chapter 75 (February 2000): "When I bowl for the first time in months, my muscle pain + score crumbles in 3 games. Kind of sad."

He eventually had to transition to longer breaks in 2006, and one could definitely tell before that with stuff in Greed Island and early Chimera. Volume comment for Vol. 21 (2005):

And then a string of painful author comments in 2016:

He said he was able to avoid having surgery, and was trying to walk/stretch more to get in shape.
That's what is really frustrating about the current situation, even if he come back next week i'm already prepared for another 10 chapters of "blah blah blah" between random guards and another 100 new characters and complicated powers being introduced and the real plot barely moving, Togashi is stuck in hell with this boat arc.
I could disprove this in a second, but since spoilers aren't allowed here... well, let me know if you wanna talk in the HxH threads.

Not really because the only thing Togashi is doing so far in this arc is introducing hundreds of characters and complicated powers + guards talking for pages, if this will have real impact in the arc he has yet to show it.

But overall i'm just bored af with this arc

Guys, I'll make a compromise in regards to the new topicality rule. I'll allow you guys to post a link to your post from the relevant WSJ threads/sections into this thread. However, some ground rules:

1. It has to be a link, and not a quote. And if your linked post has spoilers in it, you need to mark it plainly so people know what they're getting into beforehand.

2. Only one link per post per series. So, make that one link count, and succinctly summarize your thoughts.

I mean, I agree that the arc is too bloated with the number of characters and amount of text, but the notion that all he's doing is having random guard #5-500 ramble about their powers is not only disingenuous, but false.

Completely fine to be bored with the arc, but there's no reason to lie about what's happening to support your argument.

Like i said, he has yet to show that all these infinite dialogues between random guards and powers will have any real meaning or impact in the arc, you're trying to make it sounds too literal and also being too defensive, when someone says "the only thing he's doing is blah blah blah" he isn't saying it in a literal way but that the overall feeling is that nothing really happens during many of the chapters.

MHA. Shigaraki got 6th, Toga 9th.

Though, to be fair, MHA has the advantage that the villains got an entire arc where they were the protagonists.
The villains in MHA were kinda unpopular before they had their big arc. They never broke into the top 10.

Should probably be more clear, then. It's okay to point out things one doesn't like about an arc/series, but that can easily lead to solely focusing on those things and acting like there aren't things "happening". In those last 10 chapters, three pretty big events happened, with the most recent chapter clearly leading to things about to escalate. Rereading with the official translations really helps. And speaking of translations, it definitely doesn't help that many people are 1) reading the verbose fan translations and 2) not really even reading the text, so of course they're going to find things boring and confusing since they literally don't know what's going on and how things are connected (not saying this is the case for you, but I know it is for many others).

I'm curious which WSJ manga have won major awards, a lot of them seem to be aimed specifically at new series so longer manga don't appear to win much stuff.

As far as i'm concerned Togashi has already finished HxH with Chapter 339 and this is all extra. I'm personally loving this arc, but it's way too ambitious for someone in his condition and having to write it for wsj's audience is also to its detriment. I honestly doubt he will ever finish it and i'm just here forever dying to read more about the dark continent.

We're never going to have a full mysterious new continent adventure in WSJ. Toriko cut it short, HxH's going to cease publication before it gets there. Maybe Black Clover will give us one if it ever does a Yami arc.

Can anyone show this week's Oricon manga chart and the placements of WSJ manga in the chart? I think it's already uploaded.

I think the concept is simply too ambitious to really cover in story form. Especially now, with the added speed of entertainment, mangaka just don't have the space to do a story of such scale.

Since it started in 1997, no WSJ series/creator has won at all except (though I might have missed someone besides the WSJ special prize in 2012):

2003 - Hotta and Obata for Hikaru no Go (New Creator Prize)
2017 - Akimoto for Kochikame (Special Prize)
Shogakukan Manga Award
(Best Shonen Manga Category)

(1993) 39th Shogakukan Manga Award - Yu Yu Hakusho

(1994) 40th Shogakukan Manga Award - SLAM DUNK
Glad both ended up winning one.

There was no new HxH chapters last year so we could get nothing again.

I know Togashi has free reign at this but I really don't get what he's planning, the guy can't manage to get a single chapter out some years yet, whenever he does produce something, it's just some random new character that doesn't matter explaining their ability that doesn't matter, with no meaningful progress made.

You'd think he'd realise maybe he's not going to finish this arc like that (nevermind the later ones he apparently plans) and and will try to rush through this dumb boat bit to get to the stuff he really wants to write most (unless this is the stuff he really wants to do, I don't know, maybe he's lost total interest in the previous cast or villains). At the current pacing, there's is absolutely 0% chance of the series actually having the intended ending before he literally can't keep going any more.

What is Togashi even doing?
Eh. I know people have been very patient with the series but I'd rather Togashi do this at his pace even if he doesn't finish it. It really isnt worth ruining his health over.

I'm going to be honest, I voted no. This new arc alone will be god knows how long and we haven't even entered the dark continent, which is by the looks of it also going to take very long, and the more we go on the less Togashi seems to be publishing chapters. I don't think it'll be finished, if by finished you mean exploring the dark continent etc.

Also I'll add that the current arc of HxH is absolutely terrible to read with hiatuses in between. I don't even care enough to touch it anymore until it's out completely.

I have to wonder, does the shounen audience for Jump even really read HxH? With the way the current arc is going about, it seems that Togashi is catering towards the older demographic. I guess your average Jump reader wouldn't react so warmly towards pages of text, but Shounen me would have ate that stuff up.

Closest thing we have is Jigokuraku, but that's Jump Plus.

Imagine KnY scores 38 million copies until the midyear. One Piece's record is 37,996,373 in 2011. Now KnY has scored 25,629,721 in 2020. That means KnY needs 12,370,279 copies to reach the record by midyear. And there are 12 wks to midyear.

Lemme predict this week's reprints will score 2 million copies. The reprints will also happen during mid-March, so 2 million copies again. And then the next volume (Vol.20) will be out on 1st May, so I'm gonna say 3 million copies during the week's Vol.20 release. So the prediction will result in 2m+2m+3m = 7m, and 25,629,721 + 7,000,000 = 32,629,721. And then there will be 9 wks remaining by midyear and KnY will only need 5,37 million copies for 9 weeks, which is an average of 596,698 copies/week.

HOLY SHEEEEET!!! KNY WILL BEAT THE RECORD BY MIDYEAR, BOIISSS!!!
I think the endgame of Kimetsu no yaiba is already near that's why it gets ridiculous sales.

We don't know on how Act 4 in wano will turned out the sales this year. The much awaited Marineford war 2.0 but better.

Who knows the yearly sales may flip coined our expectations and I doubt they saving up for that particular one piece volume for sure.

And Jigokuraku isn't an "arc", it's the entire damn series. And it's more just a very big island than a continent.

Anyway, regarding the point of HxH, I doubt Togashi is writing this for anyone but himself at this point. Jump's readership turns over every five years or so per Oda, so really the only reason why it's still running is because of fame.
