Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Here we go again loll, the butthurt just never ends with you people does it? Going as far as to insinuate bad things about Oda.
Maybe, just maybe... despite Watsuki's criminal record, he is someone that Oda likes and considers a good friend and mentor?
Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey were "good friends" and "mentors" as well to numerous actors and actresses until allegations against them were revealed.

You considering someone a friend and mentor before any allegations and proof is acceptable.
You considering them the same AFTER proven guilty of their illegal and shitty behavior says more about you than them.

Dude, I know you like to be a contrarian, but screw off.

Oda's personal relations mean jack-shit in the face of the fact that Watsuki is a literal criminal.

I didn't want to talk much since i thought this topic would be ended by now, but a bit of reality check for you guys, is time to realise that neither the manga industry (authors and publishers) or japanese people really care about this case anymore, they dont hold a pitchfork ready to attack Watsuki everytime his name or Kenshin is mentioned, he was caught, fairly judged by the court and the public, and they moved on, Oda is far from being the only famous author or person that is his friend and Kenshin still big as always and will always be a loved series and Watsuki will not be locked in a jail at his home excluded from the world, so this notion that is "questionable" that someone is Watsuki's friend or talks to him is something very silly and it's pathetic when some people here acts like they are morally superior implying that Oda maybe is a bad person because he or someone talks with Watsuki, this is something clearly not shared by Japan as you can see with him doing collab interviews, going to authors birthday parties or Kenshin sequel being a big seller, its been some years already, dont expect people at Japan or the industry suddenly starting to throw stones at him because some people here can't move on too, it will not happen.

And please, don't even try to come at me implying that i'm condoning and blah blah blah, just being realistic with the situation since this is a old and annoying topic that will never go anywhere.

It's probably worth noting that, as mentioned earlier in the thread, CP possession was only criminalized in 2014. Wouldn't be surprised if that's how Watsuki got out on technicality.

So disliking boku no hero, thinking people should be considered as individuals and not in terms of their group, and the fact that Oda might simply see Watsuki as a mentor figure and so accepted the interview, means that I'm a contrarian that should screw off.
Well great. Thank u people's champ

I should clarify, I give Oda the benefit of the doubt solely because of the fact that he has a daughter and children. Meant to type that in my previous comment but forgot. Oh well.

That said, no one should "move on" from this.
Yeah, japan might have forgotten about this already but as stated before we are all aware of the shitty standards Japan has in some things. Especially given the fact that they were the last of the developed countries to ban such stuff.

All Watsuki got was a slap on the wrist fine and got to relax with his money from Kenshin while Shueisha banned him for a bit. Anywhere else and he would be imprisoned for years.

It's not wrong to mention this everytime his name is mentioned because the money he receives from Kenshin is what enabled him to purchase such stuff. These girls are probably still in this field without any say or control because of shitheads like him that enabled it.
So yeah, Oda might not be a terrible person (fingers crossed) but Watsuki is and Shueisha should know people dont like him outside of Japan.

That's basically what i said before, your tone is too much "i'm morally superior than Japan, let me judge them".

He was judged by the laws in that country, they judged him fairly based in the details of the case, much of what we don't even know but the resume is that he "only" had possession of underage porn, you can bet that if he actually touched an real girl he would be in prison and his career over, and believe, this would surface if he had touched. He lost, had to pay, it was judged by the public and people moved on, again, Oda is far from being the only famous person that talks or is friend with him, he was at Inagaki party months ago, this is why i said, acting like Oda or someone being his friend is "questionable" is something silly because it's clear that Japan moved on from the case and they don't see him as a monster that should be locked at home and so far he's clean.

Isn't a case of being "wrong" or "right" mentioning this stuff everytime, is just a case of being useless and unnecessary, even here many people already moved on because there's no point in being "wah wah Watsuki is a pedo monster, burn him wah wah" everytime after the guy was already judged and Japan (that is the country it matters) moved on completely, Shueisha knows that here he didn't had so easy since the series was even banned by VIZ at the time in their online stuff, but saying "they should know people don't like him outside Japan" is quite pretentious.

It's funny you use the word pretentious when that sums up much of your posts on the subject, especially your use of "wah wah" to mock people for having an opinion, and deeming people "pathetic" for considering it morally suspect when someone not only remains friends with a pedophile, but chooses to do an interview with them.

My post isn't pretentious, pretentious is acting morally superior than an country and their population because a personal view and cultural diferences, also, i'm not mocking someone for having a opinion but using the wah wah is just to show what it looks when someone just keeps saying the same old and tired stuff related to a topic that is long forgot by Japan.

And yeah, i think is pathetic trying to judge a author that never did anything bad in more than 20 years of career just because he still taking or is friend with Watsuki.

Why is it that pedophile apologists keep saying “you people” when talking about anyone critical of, and I can’t believe I have to keep saying this, a convicted pedophile.

Discussing this will always be relevant, and always important. Japan isn’t a monolith and the law finding that Watsuki was a criminal and charging him isn’t where it all ends. it doesn’t mean he’s forgiven by all Japanese people, and it doesn’t mean the harm he’s performed procuring pornography of minors, perpetuating a grim industry of illicit sex, has gone away. The conviction and punishment was a start, but it doesn’t go away. It doesn’t change what he’s done and quite likely who he continues to be. The lightness of his punishment if anything makes moving on all the harder.

If you can move on and forget, fine, enjoy your pedophile. bravo la pédophilie, as Adele Haenel would mockingly say

also hey, it’s totally rad to judge someone’s character by the company they keep when that company is a convicted pedophile, so Imma stay bummed about this

It's quite simple actually when it comes to this topic.

Do you think child pornography is bad, should be banned and those who enable it (like Watsuki) are scum and should face severe punishment because it involves little children?
If yes, you're automatically morally superior than the Japanese law (and Shueisha) which gives a tiny slap on the wrist with a fine (which Watsuki could drop while sneezing).

Child pornography will never be "done" and none of us should "move on" because it usually is a by product of human trafficking. All of this still exists today very much so.

I understand not liking it, but I don't know why this comes as a surprise. We know Inagaki invited Watsuki to his party for the Reiwa era, for example. Seems pretty clear he's still cool with his mangaka circle.

So if I'm getting it right: me, as a consumer of a product that has been published and has had a worldwide audience, can't express my disgust on how a criminal is having these public announcements and is trying to act as if nothing had happened? That just because it was judged, I can't even think that paying a fucking not-even-two-thousand dollars fine for possessing child pornography is pure trash? That I should delete my whole opinion on the topic and shouldn't bring it up anymore because a lot of time has passed?

Holy shit.

Ehh, you're just going with a radical approach in this comment 101nemesis, as if anyone is trying to imply that having child pornography is good, or even worse, that Japan, their "law" and the population think it is, things are not so black and white as you're trying to paint, the guy screwed up and he will of course in a way or another be judged by this case for many years, but Japan, be the industry or society, judged him and moved on from the case and since he is "clean" from it they will not try to keep him locked in home as some rapist monster, it's clear that the industry don't see him this way, this is why i'm saying that implying that Oda or any other author is a bad person for keeping in touch with Watsuki is silly.

I mean, nobody is saying that they should stop being friends with Watsuki. If they are privately okay with that, it's fine. But is it really necessary for the biggest mangaka currently in the industry to give him promotion with an interview like this?

I think that both sides in this discussion about Oda are committing mistakes. So, I will criticize the comments that bothered me the most.

The fact that you think it is fine that Oda supports a pedophile (that owns child pornography) because he was his mentor isn't just a contrarian thing.

I don't think you know what is a pedophile apologist. I guess you just use that word because you want to insult people in this forum.

The interview is for a Kenshin exhibition in Japan, this is hardly Oda "promoting" Watsuki since Kenshin still a big seller and alive franchise and everybody knows he is the author.

I really can't understand how Jump editorial department doesn't make this completely obligatory to every single series that starts serialization.
Make what obligatory? An official twitter account? That could easily end up being a huge waste of effort given the number of series that are likely to be dead and gone in less than 20-30 chapters. Plus who runs it? The mangaka? One of his assistants? Some Jump editor? Then there's the matter that a twitter account can be a double edged sword. It's a great way way to announce things to your fans. As a means of fan feedback it's mixed at best. It makes it easy for fans to give quick praise, but the format is poor for any sort of more detailed feedback. Meanwhile the drawbacks can be significant. Obsessed shippers will be responding to every tweet begging or outright demanding their preferred pairing be made canon. People with an axe to grind will be publicly complaining about the series constantly in response to every announcement. If someone manages to stir up a social media outrage about the series, the twitter account will be the main target and flooded with outrage that's likely from people who aren't even fans. As long as early leaks happen, the official account will have to suffer through idiots commenting about them to the official account before the chapter is formally even out in Japan. And so on.

All in all it's much better to leave it up to the discretion of the individual mangaka if they want to have such a public social media presence, or if they'd prefer to stick to regular old fan mail.

It's not to make a social media account, but to have social interaction. It doesn't necessarily need to be a Twitter account specifically from the series. It can be its own mangaka, or even the editor. And no, it's not a waste of effort. It's actually profitable and can be perfectly managed if you take into account Mitama's editor manages like 8 series and still has time to create content for the series on Twitter and promote it. Why is it that much of a problem who manages it? Editor's job is to promote and push the series they manage in order to make them profitable and successful. It's not a waste of effort, it's literal work. And why is it that receiving criticism is directly bad? If we actually looked through every single negative consequence making a campaign would have, there would literally be 0 marketing work for any series, just because it can end up bad. We're talking about posting about volume releases, about extra content from series. It's not a total bidirectional feedback since achieving that with a product that in itself is released later than it's produced is basically impossible, but it can be a good way of expanding your audience and trying to reach new people that could get attached to the series and help its popularity.

And what if there's a social media outrage? Why do you think Public Relations exist. This is not about just creating an account and posting stuff, this is about starting to know your audience, and later on create content and stuff your audience will enjoy. And when problems come up, fix them with whatever is needed, and continue with it. If we're gonna be scared about what our advertisement can bring up, then just don't make anything and let whatever you create sink without giving it a chance of growth. There are experts, there's experienced people in the topic, they won't literally fuck it up with the single first tweet they post. This is business, they're not dumb. You're really looking into every single negative possibility not thinking that all of this stuff is early planned, this is not made randomly.

And no, this is not telling the mangaka to have social media presence, it's for the product. To show it, to promote it, and do it with marketing experts that have knowledge enough in managing stuff in social media. We're not trying to eradicate privacy from people who don't want to appear publicly, but to actually invest in what you offer to your audience, and if it doesn't work, analyze what went wrong and planificate future works.
