Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS

YEEEEEEEEEES
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Rain, what purpose does this post serve, other than trying to purposely start drama with Amano fans?

If Amano theoretically did return, just don't read the series. There's no reason to hate any mangaka's return.

Unless it was Watsuki. >_>
For the love of, I spoke too soon

I don't think gag/comedy is a very productive distinction to make. There's some merit in the argument, but it's rarely clear-cut and I don't feel the current Jump comedies are that different from each other for it to matter.

Btw, regarding pagecounts, Mitama has 17, not 16, and Agravity has 19, and until I stopped reading I didn't see anything that warrants a different classification than Mitama.
?

Gag and comedy are clearly different to me. It's like comparing Dr. Slump to Grand Blue

I mean, I understood Rain's post in the direction of "Hot" being subpar and lacking potential, and thus being a waste for a veteran serialization, because that was certainly my first thought as well: I want Amano back, but not like this, not with "Hot" xD

So, yeah, I'm also glad that this is April Fools and not real.

I'm fairly certain that's not what Rain was going for, given his opinions on Amano's other works, namely Hitman Reborn.

I'm just trying to discourage that kind of behavior, which is why I left his post up instead of deleting it. Sometimes I'll forego deleting a post if I feel it's a teachable moment for other users.

I'd love to see Amano return with Hot, it'd be cool to have an Ice Hockey series in the magazine and she's great at fujo appeal so I think she could make it a big success.

Though I'm hungry for a new sports series in the magazine in general, I can't imagine Haikyuu has too long left after the current match. Don't care who it is really, I just want a new one that isn't an instant flop.

The funny things is that since Hot was published there's quite a demand in the internet to see Amano returning with it, the fact that the WSJ twitter even used that one shot for the April's joke shows that there are desire to see that being serialized.

Personally, i would prefer her returning with another battle shounen manga than a ice hockey (But my real dream is Reborn getting a sequel...)

Speaking of Hitman Reborn, I recall hearing that it outsold Bleach at one point? I don't know if that's actually true, though.

I don't know about the ranking in those years, but according to Oricon, in 2008 Reborn's sales were slightly higher than Bleach's (although only 200K)

I made a new poll, since we're on the subject of sports.

I don't think gag/comedy is a very productive distinction to make.
I think there is a distinct difference between the two. What defines traditional gag manga to me is the rapid fire comedic structure, where the author is trying to make you laugh with several jokes at every page. And to accomplish that they must resort to the other conventions or the genre, both in art and panelling to make that physically possible, and in the narrative to make those gags possible, mostly by sacrificing internal logic in favor of creative freedom/madness.

In my opinion none of that is true about Agravity, especially the narrative structure, as it has taken a very linear and progressive path with strong continuity and now has goals and mysteries laid out too. Of course its not as clear cut as I tried to make it look like, but there is definitely a traditional gag formula that Mitama fits perfectly.

A manga about snowboarding would be interesting for jumping, another interesting series about skydiving.

My top choice for a new sports manga would be surfing but since it ain’t on the poll (bummer) I’ll go with Hockey, mostly to see a new sports getting tackled in Jump

If it ends up being with Amano doing Hot, I’ll just see how it goes. An skateboarding or snowboarding manga would be sick as well

I didn't say there's no difference (or that's what I meant, maybe I wasn't clear), but that it isn't, as you made that point yourself, clear-cut, but something with a lot of grey areas and that in this case, regarding the debate about Mitama's sales and the popularity of the comedy series in Jump, it didn't seem important.

(regarding Agravity, I don't feel like what I read differs from what you mention in your first paragraph? Maybe the series changed after I dropped it, though)

Now that the Olympics have been postponed, do you think Jump will still serialize lots of sport manga this year or wait until next year? I'm guessing authors were probably already working on their serialization by now.. so maybe they will just release it now? (As in in 2-3 months from now)

I voted snowboarding but honestly I want something that is based on judging performances and don't really care which type. Could be snow/skate boarding, BMX, gymnastics, diving, etc. I'm sure Jump has had something like that before but the closest I can think of is Food Wars and the Jump+ series Moon Land.

Oh I guess Straighten Up fits my post as well

Heh, no figure skating option. But that's my vote. I wouldn't mind to have Yuri on ice-manga in wsjump

Now that the Olympics were postponed, dunno if they are gonna add more sports manga this year.

I just desperately need my Eyeshield fix. Nothing that I know of has its unique over the top tone that hits the sweet spot that is between realism and fantasy.
I would love to see it applied to pro-wrestling in kayfabe, or perhaps extreme sports.

If we do have another round incoming soon I'm sure the series are already picked. Even so, wouldn't it be better to try getting sports stuff now? Then they can attempt having a TV special or something (seems a little too quick for full length anime) while they're going to promote it or something rather than have Beast Children 2.0 being promoted and axed right after they end.

Going with tennis because it's one of the four big sports, and it deserves better representation in Jump's canon than Prince of Tennis.
