Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

What shock me is that OPM, a legit comedy is seinen and AOT shonen. 😅
But being a comedy has nothing to do with being a seinen or shounen
Though I understand being a comedy isn’t what defines a seinen. Shonen = Young Boy. Seinen = Young Adult
But what exactly defines being a Seinen.
For One Punch Man it feels almost as much of a Shonen as anything in Jump. Seems like the only thing that defines it as a Seinen is it being in a Seinen Magazine.

And on the opposite end of the spectrum I never understand how series like Yuuna and To Love Ru are considered series for Young Boys, when they’re practically series that should be 18+

Honto (June 5th):

03. Jujutsu Kaisen #11
06. Chainsaw Man #07
23. We Never Learn #17
49. Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san #22
79. Undead Unluck #02
82. Mashle #01

Not in the ranking:
Yozakura Family #03
Mitama Security #03
Hm. I know this is Honto, but that is a strong fall for Mashle.

Apparently, if these manga don't show female nipples, these could be considered for Young Boys.

Because i suppose if they were asked they wouldnt say "Ao no Exorcist 10th anniversary? nah, i don't want to make a quick draw for it", it would be quite rude to Kato Kazue.
Not sure about Kubo, but Togashi's only ones are for his favorite series/authors afaik (JoJo's 25th, DB's 30th, and Naruto's 10th).

Looking at the list, there aren't many WSJ-only authors there anyway.

I think that's basically it and aside from a general tone (that's not even always accurate) differentiating between Shonen/seinen or Shojo/josei is pointless. Is Kaguya really more mature than anything WSJ has run? Is World End Harem really better for kids than Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai? Or Chainsaw Man and almost any action series in Young Jump?

The only thing that makes a series either a Shonen or Seinen is just the Magazine it's published in.

And I think an 18+ is too harsh for Yuuna and TLR. Yeah they have their lewd moments, but I feel like they are still too tame for an "Adults Only" rating. 18+ should be on stuff like Berserk.

Didn't Horikoshi mention the new MHA movie uses elements he planned for the ending? I doubt Oda planned for One Piece to be nearly as long as it is either. Stuff probably changes while they write. New ideas contradict how the ending would work so they need to rework plans
Horikoshi said that he used a scrapped idea from the final arc iirc.

Oda initially planned One Piece to be 5 years long and now we're 23 years in with no end in sight. Though Oda also said a few years ago that he didn't change the ending once in over 20 years. He just added stuff in between, but the last chapter is still the same how he initially planned it out.

One of the main reasons that made One Piece this long were the Shichibukai. They weren't originally planned to be in the story. The Yonkou were planned from the start, but adding the Shichibukai made the manga a lot longer than it was initially planned to be. Iirc Oda mentioned this in a very recent interview. I think it might've been last year or even this year if I'm not mistaken.

Have to give best ending in the past decade to Toriko. The fact that Shima was only given around a year left to wrap up everything that was planned it’s astonishing how satisfying and “complete” the ending turned out to be. Almost every major character arc concluded with only the potential space adventure getting axed due to decreasing popularity.

It’s a shame most of the cool plot points that were setup got rushed during the buildup of the finale as it would have definitely been one of the best grand epic journeys in Jump history.

I wonder if Toriko would still be ongoing now if it hadn't rushed to the final battle halfway through the whale arc.

Even if without a space arc, I could see it still going now if each of the arcs he skipped got their own full arcs. Maybe just about to end.

I doubt Shimabu would have been allowed to continue, at any rate.

But yeah, hypothetically, the series definitely would still be going if he had tenure.

I find Toriko to still be one of the best adventure titles even after the rushing but I get what you mean. Which is a testament to how godly the world building is.

The reason why series like to love ru and Yuna are aloud in shonen magazines are due to the fact that nudity and sex appeal is actually much less taboo there than it is in the west. The difference between a seinen ecchi manga and a shonen ecchi manga is that shonen is normally just nudity while seinen can basically be borderline H. Now to answer the question about OPM I think I have 2 reasons it’s a seinen. 1. TNYJ was the only webcomic site shueisha had at the time. I personally think that is the reason and the company considers OPM a shonen manga (hence why it has the jump comics logo that most shonen jump series have). 2. Seinen magazines tend to give you much more creative freedom than a shonen one and they are more relaxed on schedules, deadlines, and dropping. 3. Maybe the mangaka just wants the manga to be read by adults. Seinen doesn’t always mean extremely violent and sexual stories as they just appeal to adults (for example k on is a seinen).
It’s not so much that I believe a series needs to be rated R to appeal to adults.
I understand that something can be PG and still be for adults.

I more so mean that OPM just doesn’t feel all that much different than a typical Shonen as far as it’s structure

I swear I will never understand why people care so much about a label referring to the target demographic of a magazine. It makes literally no difference whether OPM is shonen or seinen or whether AoT is shonen or seinen. Hell, WSJ is supposed to be "catered to young boys" yet more than half the magazine's readership is over 18.

So sad about Neverland ending, this will be really sad... I believe it's even better than Kimetsu, and should have had the same success unluckly
Hope to see Posuka next work as soon as possible

Kimetsu's success came as a surprise to everyone, probably even Shueisha. I don't think even the craziest, head butting, pig assault church of Nezuko-chan fanboys would imagine that it would enter the 3 million per volume club and outsell OP full year record in half a year.
