Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I don't think kyoani will return any time soon...i give them 2-3 years to recover. For me act age could be taken by Cloverworks or Shaft.

I mean, the poll isn't useless. The rankings kinda are, and for really popular series is whatever, but the fact that people care enough to vote for some new series is significant, or for other series that aren't that well-known, it is a good sign. It's mostly a matter of how you use the data.

(well, now that the western audience is aware of it it got more useless, because we can't say who's voting for it. But my overall point stands.)

I don't think you get it, there is no actual voting limit on how much I can vote. With enough time on my hands or a bot I could make Guardian of the witch win the poll.

you never know if that was a lot of people votes or just one dude with thousand of Russian bots
I know, but that's... highly unlikely. I'm not saying to use it as exact metric or anything, especially not now that people got notice of it, lol, but at first, it's not nothing that Undead or Mashle were in high positions. Does that mean they are like the 20th most popular manga in Japan? Obviously not, but it means that some people care por it. The fact that people could just keep voting.... is more of a hypothetical, really. For a series to have obsessed fans at this point, it needs to have a decent quantity of fans in the first place. There's nothing that absurd on the list (well, there wasn't, I don't know now) for me to believe it was really distorted.

Again, it's not that you should look it as actual popularity rankings or anything, but taking it as a list of 100 series people are enjoying right now, it's sorta fun. And kinda good for new, unproven series to be there.

Something that I recently thought of is what separates Jump series from Shonen series from other magazines.

I read tons of Shonens, but for some reason Jump has a very distinct feeling to it compared to other Shonens. Idk what it is.
Like, series like Fairy Tale, Fire Force, Zatch bell, etc. all feel obviously like Shonen series, but I could never imagine those ever running in Jump.

While stuff MHA, JJK, Demon Slayer, BC, etc. just feels like it comes from the same magazine as stuff I grew up reading as a kid like Naruto, Dragon Ball, Bleach, etc.

Was thinking about this a lot recently, but was wondering if anyone else gets this feeling from Jump compared to other series, and waist traits you’d say senates Jump. Idk.
I was actually thinking the same recently. There's this youtube channel showing manga series of Shounen Jump, Shounen Magazine and Shounen Sunday by anime openings. So I was browsing through the comments of the Shounen Magazine video and saw someone commenting how in his opinion, the series in Shounen Magazine were underrated because the magazine isn't as popular as Jump.

This made me think a lot about this topic and I think Jump is more popular than Magazine or Sunday in particular because the manga in Jump are more popular. Of course it's easier for those manga to gain popularity because more people are buying the magazine. But it's not like Jump always used to be the most popular one.

Personally, while I can't really comment on Shounen Sunday, there are some good series from Shounen Magazine, like Diamond no Ace and To Your Eternity. But most of the other manga I've seen from magazine just seem like manga that I could never see running in Jump like Fairy Tail, Nanatsu no Taizai, Eden Zero and especially all of the Kouji Seo manga like Fuuka.

I feel like Jump has a way more refined selection process. Despite many criticizing that Jump cancels so many manga early, I believe that is the main reason that sets it apart from Shounen Magazine and Shounen Sunday. I think because they're cancelling less popular manga so fast, this leads to most of the manga surviving in Jump being popular. While Shounen Magazine from what I've seen lets all series of established authors like Hiro Mashima and Kouji Seo survive. Jump on the other hand will even cancel veteran authors if the manga isn't up to Jumps standards.

So imo, the selection process and the fast cancellation of less popular series is the key difference that ends up giving Jump the edge over Magazine and Sunday. Most of the series from Magazine and Sunday would probably either not make it through the selection process for Jump or would get cancelled early on.

Damn, look at all those series getting reprints for all their volumes lol. The Promised Neverland, My Hero Academia and Dr. Stone are all because they are releasing new volumes next month (basically all the big hits with the exception of, well, Black Clover). Jujustu Kaisen is just riding the pre-anime hype and Haikyuu!! still riding the post-anime boost, which are both good. Meanwhile, One Piece gets reprints for a random volume, Yozakura gets one for volume two and no signs of reprints for Undead Unluck yet. It's a curious list.

Now that I think about it, My Hero Academia has had very little stuff happening lately since end of season 4 and announcement of season 5. Things have been so quiet that I've even seen people on Twitter retweeting on Sundays the Shonen Jump tweets announcement of every Jump series except My Hero Academia for some reason (I mean, MHA hasn't had a new volume in months and other manga have been getting the spotlight). I mean tweets like this:

I guess the 6th manga anniversary next month plus the first volume release since March-April plus the end of literally every direct competition in Jump (Neverland, Kimetsu, maybe Haikyuu) will give MHA some more spotlight since it would become the most veteran and succesful manga of the roster after One Piece.

PS: Act-age volume 4 in Spain in 8 days. Time for Araya here. For some reason, the only licensed manga that isn't getting released here is Chainsawman. Announced in November but still no news.

I don't believe there are people here who want kyoani to do the Act Age anime! It irritates me a lot when I read this opinion, do you hate the story and characters of Act Age a lot? If Kyoani does the Act Age anime, they’ll change the history of the series a lot, they’ll cut chapters, they’ll have fillers episodes, they’ll change the development of the characters, they’ll probably cut characters, they’ll create characters that don’t exist in the manga, it won’t be a good adaptation, maybe a cute and fun series but it won’t have the same story of the manga.

Not really. Again, all it takes is a handful of fans to bloat the polls numbers up.
If the series has a die hard fan like that crazy Nisekoi fan (I think, this was many years ago) who spent so much money voting for his favorite character in a poll which WSJ had to publicly acknowledge, then it can completely make something seem relevant when it isn't. Online voting is the easiest to get by especially for such unregulated polls.

Fans do a lot more for a lot less

Recently I’ve been re-reading Yozakura and it has actually been very enjoyable, especially once i stopped forcing it in my head to be the next Hitman Reborn (but lowkey fingers still crossed lol).

The argument for the lack of the family member use is fair but it’s spread out nicely and when they are used it’s enjoyable. The over arching story being sprinkle about flows well when reading in bulk and you grow to accept the world and characters are all crazy except for Taiyo.

Glad the sales are doing well and hope it continues to grow because i think it would translate really well into a anime.
