Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Its not going to help though... In the end I dont think west actually like Sasaki.I think they like interesting plot. They prefer to have very flawed protagonist if it means having decent manga instead of 1231 exorcist manga with absolute hero protagonist
I agree. I don't think a lot people in the West care much about Sasaki, they like the premise.

Although it is more that the West will accept an unlikeable protagonist if it means having a decent premie.

There could be very flawed protagonists in popular manga, but they are usually enough liked by their japanese readers.

I think you exaggerate about exorcist manga, I haven't seen that many this year. In fact bone collection was the only one of its kind that debuted at Jump this year.
Magazine and young jump have 4 romance manga each and no one complains about it.
If these complaints about the exorcist and comedy sleeves are due to the absence of sports manga, you should have already realized that the problem was the Japanese readers who were not interested in the manga that debuted, but now that haikyuu is finished, let's see if they are interested in anything.

People might remember a few years back when, after Bleach ended, a bunch of people (including some youtubers) latched onto Red Sprite thinking it would be the big new hit but it ended up being a total failure in Japan.

Red Sprite was terribly executed, just rushing from climax to climax, each climax ultimately didn't matter beyond making MC look cooler, and all the side characters also just existed to make MC look cooler. But because people were desperate for a new battle shounen and Red Sprite had a bunch of big dramatic moments and was in English weekly, people got really excited about it, not caring/noticing the awful execution.

Ghost Writer I think is in a similar situation. Sci-fi premise, rushing between big moments, every new dramatic moment just being more justification for MC, side characters also only existing to justify MC's actions, starting after a bunch of big hits ended so people are desperate for anything that stands out. It's Red Sprite 2.

So, just because a manga is canceled doesn't mean it's bad.
I see a lot of people who like Black touch for example, and it is popular outside Japan even though it was canceled.

When it comes to stories, "bad" or "good" heavely depends on people tastes.

All stories have flaws, it all depends on whether something can catch the reader or not.

But that is exactly the point I want to make. Just because a manga is canceled does not mean it was a fair cancellation.

Take the case of Amalgam, for example, even selling more than many current jump series, it was still canceled.

Oh cool. Ghostwriter topic again. Wonder if there is a parallel timeline where we didn't constantly talk about it.

My personal problem with TPGW is the way the story just jumps forward with absolutely zero flow. There is no set up or anything. Just constant fast forwarding of time to show major events in every chapter.
The only explanation I can think of is that the series is getting cancelled very quickly. Therefore, the mangaka wanted to show all twists he had in mind.

I must say that I am not very fan of the concept "this canceled manga is popular outside Japan", because we do not know how correct that is.

It is usually based in the manga being popular in a relatively small group of West fans.

It's always possible that it has even more Japanese fans (after all, manga still sold some volumes in Japan), but not enough to be profitable.

I don't know how much Amalgam sells, but if the current Jump series don't sell more than a canceled series (or grow to sell more), it is pretty likely these will be canceled soon too.

The current situation of WSJ has allowed some series to last longer than they would have lasted in the past (although not always, as Bone Collection proves).

The cancellation is due to the fact that the magazine does not find the manga profitable. That's fair.

To be fair to Young Jump, those 4 romance manga are all significantly different from one another. There’s different types of romances, ya know. XD

If anybody’s read Ao no Hako, how do you guys think it can be made into a serialized series? What things will it have to change? The one-shot has good reception, so it does seem best for Jump to move towards a relatively speedy serial, especially since WNL is ending and they have a lot of space.

(Watch this get serialized on Jump+ instead while we get something more generic for Jump proper.)

A bit off-topic, but some people are already saying there were no copies of Mashle left when they went to their usual bookstores. It seems the reception is really as expected.

I know, so much that I read kaguya and kanojo 100, and also, it gives the same way that young jump romance manga are different from each other kaisen jujutsu and chainsaw man are very different from each other.
I think it's time to jump into the romantic phase too.

So I just went and read this Red Sprite. MC just hijacked a ship and forced a bunch of prisoners to follow him on his Fight for Freedom.
For the whole time I hoped the manga concluded with one of the crew betraying him and his mission ending in failure. Surely not a succesful attempt to make a protagonist likeable.

Speaking of Red Sprite, I really don’t miss that era of the US Shonen Manga community.

It was still the early days of us getting the new Jump series as they first released in Japan. EVERY SINGLE battle Shonen would be hyped as being “The Next Member of the New Big 3?”, simply because it was a Shonen Jump battle shonen.

Then when said series got cancelled all you saw on twitter and reddit were whining fans! “Why did Jump cancel this series!!! It was still new and had so much potential!! One Piece didn’t get good until the Arlong arc!! They could at least have waited til it got an anime or something!!”
And then even worse, the youtubers starting “F*** Shonen Jump” and “Boycott WSJ until they stop cancelling good series to early” campaigns.

Same. Still happens from time to time (Samurai 8) but I guess now that we're getting everything instead of just the already proven stuff most active readers of/people who discuss Shonen Jump see how it works.

Edit:
As excited I am to hear that Mashle is selling out, the logical explanation is probably that WSJ didn't print more than the bare minimum required amount of copies (at least in their eyes) like they've been doing for a lot series these days post S8 debacle.

The good thing is this still means Mashle exceeds WSJ expectatives.

I heard a lot of the same things in regards to Bleach ending.

Great, now you just asked the question nobody wanted to ask.

Folks, here we have the makings of a classic Jump dilemma: Jump+ or OG Jump? Which to choose?

Jump+: A need to grow the platform. Authors may not necessarily enjoy the same kind of exposure one would get at the main magazine.

OG Jump: It’s JUMP. That’s all that needs to be said. Author however may not enjoy a long leash on the manga, despite positive initial reception.
