Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Never heard of CBR, so I went and looked through some of their articles. I didn't expect them to be this bad. For example they made a top 10 of the worst Shounen Jump characters and included characters from Fullmetal Alchemist, Attack on Titan and One Punch Man.

I'd like to know how the people writing those articles even got their job because not only are they bad at writing, they seem to have no knowledge about the manga industry or Shounen Jump at all.
CBR is basically tabloid click bait aimed at anime/manga fans as well as western comic fans. Accuracy and quality aren't goals of theirs. Just getting people to click on an article is their goal. For example they have articles along the lines of 'top ten facts about such and such MHA character' that's basically just the character's bio page turned into a list with maybe a factoid or two from wikia thrown in. Laughable inaccuracy is par for the course for them.

I usually go for the middle rank option since new series have more chances to land there, but this one time decided to go for the Top 5 for Magu-chan's first placement, just a gut feeling I guess, really hope its liked a lot in Japan for it to place that high

Funnily enough I've got the feeling that Magu-chan might have the worst reception of the bunch (I voted bottom 5). Ayakashi Triangle doesn't really have competition in another ecchi/romcom except for maybe We Never Learn which is on the way out anyways. Hard-boiled Cop and Dolphin has Ryuhei Tamura which might help it in the short term even if it's not greatly received, and Me & Roboco feels like its catering to a younger demographic than the rest of the magazine which helps it stand out amongst the abundant comedies. Magu-chan relies on similar character dynamics as Moriking so I can imagine them being in competition with one another in the coming months.

I can foresee everything in this batch except Ayakashi Triangle getting cancelled within a year. Again, just a hunch that could be proven entirely wrong.

I have the feeling since chapter 1 that it will not be the popular thing people think it will or want it to be despite being a solid fun series, still voted in the middle because checking twitter and stuff for the new series there are quite the fanarts and even cute models created by some fans, so it seems that the series has some kind of following but you never know if this will translate into the rankings and etc, but i will not be surprised if it's at least in the middle to bottom.

Even excluding the revenue coming in from sales, I can’t imagine Shueisha and Jump not compensating Usazaki in some way.

She was cancelled for reasons out of her control, without warning or prep time. Would be horrible if they just said “hey, I know you had a solid source of income because of Act-Age, but sorry, you’re on your own now”.

I obviously have no way of knowing they wouldn’t do this. Big cooperations screw over their employees all the time. I’d just like to imagine they’re giving her some type of payments aside from volume royalties until she finds a new series
According to Bakuman, WSJ authors have a yearly contract so they get paid (a little) even when they don't have a series running.

I know Bakuman isn't the best source, but I can't see any reason they would lie about something like this.

Speaking of compensation, I hope the other-language publishers also get some kind of redress if Shueisha indeed decides to pull the license. Viz will be fine either way, but Ki-oon is a relatively small French publisher with few big titles (according to their website, Act-age is their second most popular series), and Act-age 3 was scheduled to appear on August 27th, which means it was already translated and possibly even printed. Having to throw the entire run would probably be a significant loss for them (and also a total waste, so I hope they won't be doing this. Not doing reprints is one thing, tossing a whole bunch of perfectly good books in the bin is another).

Magu-chan sounds like it's middle of the pack to me. It's honestly just the really safe option. This first ranking doesnt really matter, just depends on how it ranks later and eventually how it sells. I know a lot of people like it, but as a recent series is showing, just because we like it doesnt mean that the Japanese audience will. It'll be interesting, seeing how it does.

Ironically, with the current state of the magazine, middle ranking is no longer the safe option at all.

In fact, this week, the 'middle' will only have two titles in it, since there are only 12 series to rank iirc.

How I see the magu chan situation, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a failure and gets axed U19 chapters but at the same time I can also see this being a hit for shonen jump. With a series like this it can go either way. I really cant see me and roboco lasting past 25 chapters and I can say the same for the cop and dolphin manga.

As much as I don’t like ayakashi triangle I think that it has the highest chance for survival for that round not only because of the author who is writing this (I mean look at how samurai 8 turn out) but just for the sole fact that it is the only ecchi manga running and that certain genre clearly has a dedicated audience in jump at the moment filling the void that yuuna left once it ended. However even with this series I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a flop.

So far the only 2020 series I see being a potential pillar in the future is mashle. I hope the at least one of the new series (pacifically our blood oath) is any good and is at least unique in some aspects. I hope the round after this one will actually have some unique and exceptional manga.

that certain genre clearly has a dedicated audience in jump at the moment filling the void that yuuna left once it ended.
Which is funny considering many Yuuna fans are preparing their pitchfork for how tame Triangle is.

If that's the case, AT seems to have found itsel in the worst position to be in:
-too ecchi for most of the general audience to read
-not ecchi enough for those who love their cheesecake to really enjoy

It should really commit to one of these two sides, or at least improve overall.

technically
Concerning Shueisha’s official statement below, VIZ Media will no longer publish current and future works of Act-Age, including graphic novels and digital volumes, and chapters will be removed from the Shonen Jump digital vault.
is their own statement

???

It's a perfectly normal ecchi and romcom action series, also the 2nd most read "2020" series on Manga Plus behind Mashle, seems like is pleasing both sides so far.
