Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I don't have an inherent problem with too many gag or exorcist manga being serialized. As savethecat pointed out a lot of them can be completely unique and to the point people don't even connect them to those routes. My problem comes from running similar concepts too close. Why are both Phantom Seer and Our Blood Oath starting this round? They have differences but also a lot of similarities that have already been pointed out here. I know I've said I think the lack of sports series is due to authors going elsewhere with them but I'm sure if Jump wanted they could get some sports series instead of running the exact same series twice in a single batch.

I know it was brought up Magazine has a lot of rom-coms and Sunday has a lot of slice of life but those all feel different from each other. I never felt like Rent a Girlfriend, Necromance, Cuckoo's Finace were basically the same as each other. I tried doing the same comparison as Jump with batches but other magazines don't seem to do batches just starting one or maybe two at a time.

I looked through Magazine's new series this year and they seem to have only started 2 new rom-coms (Cuckoo and Kanojo) compared to having 3 mystery/suspense stories (Reaper's Dice Game and XEVEC which have ended and Nare no Hate no Bokura) which isn't a genre they're really known for. Magazine has started 10 new series in 2020 so far with one being short. Compare to Jump who in 2020 has started 16 series with one being short and 6 gags and 5 exorcism series. A total of 4 don't fit into either (Zipman, Guardian of the Witch, Ghostwriter, Burn the Witch). I don't think people would be complaining about them if the bulk of 2020 wasn't made up of them.

Look at Phantom seer and Bokura, I can see a different being between them.
Phantom seer for example, in the comments I read from the Japanese, I see comparisons with Neuro and Samon kun, in addition to comments like him having an easy read and praise for the characters and the arts of course.
Bokura, on the other hand, turned into a desperate attempt by a kimetsu on yaiba 2.0.
Honestly, it can be canceled with fewer chapters than Time Paradox, but you have to see the next chapters.

Neither Mashle nor Undead are Exorcist or Gag either. That got me curious though, someone's probably done it before but I figured I'd go through the genres of series per year (excluding mini-series).

2015
5 battle - Black Clover, Kagamigami, Cyborg Roggy, Ultra Battle Satellite, Lady Justice
4 sports - Dance Club, Mononofu, Best Blue, Buddy Strike
2 gag - Devilyman, Samon
1 detective - School Judgment
one of which is exorcist

2016
6 battle - Demon Slayer, Bort, Takuan and Batsu, Red Sprite, Amalgam, Demon's Plan
2 romcom - Yuuna, Love Rush
1 sports - Ole Golazo
1 battle of wits - Neverland
1 gag - Spring Weapon
one of which is exorcist

2017
3 battle - U19, Poro, Golem Hearts
3 sports - Robot x Laserbeam, Shuudan, Full Drive
2 romcom - WNL, Cross Account
1 gag - Tomatoypoo
1 survival - Dr Stone (I've always considered it a survival series at least, it's like a manga version of survival crafting games like Minecraft and such)
1 very mixed - Hungry Marie
no exorcists I think, unless Poro was one? I don't remember

2018
5 battle - Boze Beats, Jujutsu, Noah's Notes, Ziga, Tanaka Seiji
2 gag - I'm From Japan, David
2 romcom - Alice and Taiyo, Invade you (last one might have been just a gag series? I didn't read it past ch 3)
1 acting drama - Act-age (rip)
1 sports - Momiji no Kisetsu
two of which are exorcists

2019
5 battle - Chainsawman, Higuma, Saiyuki, Samurai 8, Tokyo Shinobi Squad
2 sports - Double Taisei, Beast Children
1 gag - Mitama Secureity
1 battle of wits - Ne0lation
2 very mixed - Kamio Yui, Yozakura
four are exorcists, though Kamio Yui was such a mess that it doesn't really feel like one

2020 so far
5 battle - Zipman, Undead, Guardian, Phantom Seer, Blood Oath
3 gag action - Mashle, Bone, Cop and Dolphin
5 gag - Agravity Boys, Moriking, Magu-chan, Roboco, High School Family
1 romcom - Ayakashi Triangle
1 mess - Ghost Writer
four of which are exorcists

Poro was a demon king, he doesn't count as exorcists. He just had to fight so many demons because their whole hell society was basically one large PvP and defeating Poro gets you the most points.

This year is definitely the least varied in terms in new series genres despite having the most new series in decades, the other years all have at least 3 or 4 series that aren't battle or gag but there's only two this year so far. Getting just one series that's a more unique premise outside the standard 4 genres is pretty normal (Ghost Writer being 2020's one), but there has always been at least 1 sports series in other years to add a little more genre variety.

There is still a bunch of issues left however, I doubt we'll get anything new during the GFC but I can imagine getting something new after it in #51 or #52 before we move onto 2021 numbers.

I was counting Mashle as it at least started as a more gag heavy series which is probably what Jump would have had in the meeting when they decided to serialize it. For some reason Undead completely slipped past me.

Poro I’ll say was more of a comedy/slice of life than a straight out battle series IMO

See, I said that there weren't as many exorcist manga as many are criticizing.
This year there was a lot more comedy than anything else.
You could cancel 3 of the current jump comedies and put other more different things in place.

Well there's been 4 new exorcist series this year, and there was 4 last year too. That's quite a lot when there's usually 1 or none per year.

Having lots of new gag manga makes sense since they've always had 4-5 successful gag manga running at a time in the past and are trying to build their numbers back up, but the recent slew of exorcist manga in the past couple years is just weird. It's not a huge core genre like gag manga are, and they already have a successful one right now anyway with Jujutsu so it's not a genre that's desperately missing either.

Heck exorcists are even being added into series that don't need it, the family in Blood Oath could've easily been normal vampires instead of possessed by a vampire youkai that needs to be exorcised (and probably would've had more impact to it as well).

It is not bigger, we are talking about 2020 exclusively.
And even if it were, at least when these manga are not well accepted, jump cancels before 19 chapters.
But in the case of different comedies, they are less demanding, Mitama was even canceled with 47 chapters. And I'm sure that the same will happen with Moriking and Agravity or they will be transferred to jump +.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

And in 2019 as an exorcist it was only Chainsaw, Higuma and saiyuki.

Kamio yui was a very experimental thing, at first it was romance, battleshonen then ecchi, and it was only for exorcism because he is doing so badly.

Can we expect One Piece to reach 500 000 000 copies in circulation by 2022 ?

There's one thing I didn't say:

You're saying that seven exorcist manga (Kamio yui doesn't count), published in a period of 2 years and with a hiatus of about 4 or 5 months, between the cancellation of Saiyuki and the beginning of Bone collection, saturates more than the 10 comedy manga (Mitama and bone collection included) that were published in a period of 1 year?
And detail that you also said that with jujutsu being successful, there was no need to have so many exorcist manga. Good mashle is very successful, so it means we don't need Yozakura, Corps and douphin, magu chan, Roboko and the others.

You're forgetting Mitama Secureity from last year. I wasn't actually counting Chainsawman.

Using Mashle as a counter example shows you've missed the entire point. It's a mix of gag and battle shounen, both of which have always taken up a large portion of the roster in the magazine in the past are are important to the core of Jump. Hence why we get special competitions and celebrations for new romcoms and gag manga oneshots and such.

Kamio Yui becoming one as it went on just shows the problem, series just seem to randomly add in exorcists to join the fad. Your romcom is failing? Just add exorcists. Pitching a new gender-flipping romcom to Jump but don't know how to fill out the setting? Just add exorcists. Jump is unsure about running your BL vampire manga? Just add exorcists. Have a great design for a main girl but don't know what to do with her? Just add exorcists. Thought of an MC with a cool power and need a setting to put him in? Just add exorcists.

Exorcists are WSJ's isekai. A basic and easy premise an author/editor lumps on when they don't want to think much about what to do.
