No matter what people here think deserves a colour and what doesn't, WSJ believes in Magu-chan more than Phantom right now for some reason or another that we don't get to see. I think once we see each series' v3 sales maybe things will change, since then we'll have seen consistent growth (or lack of it), but 2 volumes isn't enough to judge a series' future potential unless it's an instant huge hit or instant huge flop.

Though for all we know this whole debate could be pointless and PS will get a colour the issue after next. With new series that aren't clear hits or flops, you never really know what to expect week to week in Jump.

What reason could that be?

Can you at least speculate?

you can't say that WSJ sees more potential in magu chan than in Phantom seer.

We are talking about WSJ, which is the magazine that sells the most in Japan, so if sales of volumes were not important, Jump would not reach this level where it arrived.

I know you like magu chan, but you can't be underestimating Phantom seer sales.

Poll results is the obvious answer. The ToC might not be an exact representation of the polls but that doesn't mean it's inaccurate to them either. The ToC is clearly weighted by weekly popularity, it's just that a series' exact ranking is probably around the area it appears in the ToC rather than in that exact spot.

So for example Yozakura might not actually rank above Magu, and Magu might not actually be above Undead, but the bottom 3 are almost certainly still the bottom 3 (again maybe not in exact order, but still taking those 3 end spots).

If the ToC wasn't at least reasonably accurate to what's polling well and what's not, there'd be no point in posting and discussing it each week.

Sales weigh more, man.

WSJ is not a charity. PS has better sales and better growth than magu chan.

I honestly think Phantom Seer it's safe for at least 6 months more, maybe Jump it's being conservative with it, since it may sell that well because it's similar to JJK and KNY in themes, so they want to see how it grows and if it will stand on its own feet.

I still think it will outlast Magu, hell, I even think it will outlast yokazura, although i think roboco it's safer since it's easier to make ads out of it (it can ride on other series success thanks to the fact that is a referential comedy and it can help getting kids to read WSJ, altough if that works long term is to be seen)

On a different note since nobody's going to change their mind here, what's everyone's predictions on how Build King and Sakamoto will sell whenever their first volumes are out?

my guess is around 5-7k first week for Build King since that's the level returning veteran's flops seem to be doing recently, and 15k-20k for Sakamoto (I think it might be held back by low print numbers) unless it keeps dropping in the ToC but I think it'll still be fine.

I think Sakamoto will sell 25k-30k, similar to mashle, And build king will sell 10k-15k because the author is a successful veteran

I mean I like Phantom Seer and would love to see it succeed and sure can see how people would think its sales would keep it in the magazine...but the positioning doesnt suggest the jump editorial team has faith in its long term prospects, the lack of promotional material supports such thinking.

I don't want to beat a dead horse since the conversation is moving away from it, but I was under the impression that the general consensus was that Phantom Seer fans probably don't buy the magazine very often (which is why it ranks low in the TOC). So promoting it within the magazine actually might not be that beneficial for the series.

If that's the case, wouldn't it make sense for them to promote Magu-chan with CPs, in the hopes that it will provide an incentive for fans to go out and buy the volumes? If volume 3 doesn't show any growth after this, I think they'll stop pushing it. But I also might be completely misunderstanding things, in which case I hope someone corrects me.

I think phantom seer might last 60-80 chapters and have a pretty solid ending

The general assumption is that the people that buy Phantom Seer volumes are people that want to read more dark fantasy series after reading JJK and KNY and they are being attracted by that, the fact that it's on the same label (Jump Comics) as those two, and the art

Maybe Jump think people only bought PS for the art rather than the story or the character, so it not sustainable for a long running series (artwork can only carry so much). They may like the artist but have no faith in the writer.

If people only bought it for the art, there wouldn't have been so much growth with the second volume. There was obviously something about the story that brought them back.

I think Jump is trying to regain readership from young people, (It seems that people who read Jump right now are older than the original target?)
that's why they are pushing more Magu-Chan, I'm not saying it's not popular...

but PS is doing better sales wise and deserve better, at least a second CP (I also assume it's more similar to JJK, horror stuff etc as someone told it above)
Another explanation is that PS readers are JJK readers, so that's not "new" readers for the mag.

That's my take (sorry if it's a bit clumsy)
