Probably a good advice would be to not get attached to Ame no Furu, it smells quick cancelation.
No please no, I dont want Midori to be the cute kid trapped in a cancelled manga.

Shouldda gone harder on the comedy.

Candy Flurry sure is causing a rift huh, everywhere I look the opinion seems to be split pretty evenly on whether it's great fun or simply awful.

imo it's an ok first chapter. I don't really mind the cliches so far, but they could also end up being this series' biggest weakness. For a premise as zany as candies it's just treating them as a standard superpower, you could replace the sweets with literally anything else and the story will largely stay the same. Neither the story nor the art makes the characters stand out, I find the girl likable enough but the boy is pretty dull. Talking about the art, it's not *terrible*, but not very impactful, both character design and action can be more over the top to better push this premise, and anatomy is kinda janky in places. It is, however, easy enough to follow, so I'd say it's serviceable.

All in all it can really go either way. I'm not instantly charmed, but I'm curious enough to keep checking it out for now.

Candy Flurry doesn't feel like your typical jump flop battle shounen to me, those usually have some major missteps right away but this one I think is pretty well made overall. There's no long dull infodumps, it established the personality of the two characters fairly well with good focus on them, and sets up some potential long-term plot with the mystery of who destroyed Tokyo and with the organisation.

Rather than a flop, to me it feels more like the kind of safe but solid battle shounen you'd see being a decent hit in a minor publication like Comic Blade or something. Doing well in Jump however is another matter, it'll really depend on how the next few chapters go.
This is the take I agree with. As hyped as I was for this I have to admit it is a letdown, but not a series I'd write off as completely unsalvageable. I thought the art was fine, but nothing to write home about (though the action scenes show promise.) I like the leads well enough too which is more than I can say for most of the Jump lineup. I think the first chapter ending on a legit cliffhanger works for and against it since it makes it hard to really measure it's premiere overall since it's not done, but it establishes it as more than a oneshot with DLC. In all maybe I'm just desperate to like it because of it's (few) similarities with RYOKO, but I don't think this is an immediate flop as much as it's a middling first chapter.

Blue Box on the other hand continues to surprise me in being so endearing (to me) despite it being in two of my most disliked genres.

I almost felt offended at how bad candy flurry was
If this is the material that gets serialized I dont want to ever see the ones that dont make the cut

Nah I bet it's an axe Bait. You have to go all out in this concept, espcially how harsh jump is. Art just has to stand out

Did anyone else catch the odd line in Blue Box from Taiki’s grandpa? I’m hoping the story doesn’t go down that route because it would be such an unnecessary element in a story that is otherwise already very good.

I liked the art of Candy Flurry, though the writing felt like a mixed bag. Definitely also getting some Bone Collection/ZIPMAN axe vibes from the first chapter, sadly.

You mean Taiki and Chinatsu being related via the grandmother having remarried depending on when the divorce was? Possible. Though them never finding that out earlier since the mother knew Chinatsu's mother since school seems unlikely. Ah well, it needs to live long enough before it can pull the drama card "omg, we are related?!". xD

As for Candy Flurry, it was a bit boring. I'd rather had seen a series with gummy bear zombies, Marshmallow Monsters, licorice leeches, Chocolate Golems, Icecream Imps and so on and so on. If Jump is okay with the gore of Chainsawman it should be okay with gummy bears tearing apart humans in chapter 1 for some shock impact. Imagine adorable looking gummy bears looking like the devil bears from the sleepy princess but as gummy bears eating humans and humans having to fight them with candy-like weapons since all other weapons are for whatever reason not functional against those kind of enemies. You could had a real Post-Candylypse series here, but this was really tame from what could have been possible.

I thought it was great, realism and some background building

My Jump Issue 20 Rankings

Great: BC, Blue Box, UU, Cop & Dolphin

Good: MHA, Dr. Stone, Sakamoto Days, Elusive Samurai, Yozakura Fam

Average: JJK, Mashle, Roboco, Nine Dragons' Ball Parade

Meh: Candy Flurry, HS Fam, Ayakashi Triangle

Yikes: Witch Watch, Magu-chan, i tell c

Few Thoughts
-Cop & Dolphin was so great but I wish the story had stayed a bit serious from the start and this would have been even more impactful.
-I tell c really decided to become a joke haha manga??? Do the editors not help the mangaka or when back in a corner is “be funny” the only advice they can give. This series is screwed.
-I have no idea why NDBP is so low but I think it’s due to pacing. Still only 3 team members and still only in first game.
-Candy Flurry seemed so fucking flat. Like it lacked any impact emotionally from me. Her decision was given away by the color page plus it was all too obvious. The world seems interesting and the art is okay but the story just flopped for me instantly. It still has ingredients to be better.

Jump #20:

Great:
Blue Box
- How sweet they are, weekly dose of sweetness.
Kowloon's Ball Parade - Come on, Japanese, don't let that pearl sink...
Dr. Stone - Boichi doesn't stop to amaze me.
Sakamoto Days - Great choreography for the fight with the lab guys.

Good:
Jujutsu Kaisen
- That game is insane.
My Hero Academia - What a team-up.
The Elusive Samurai - Another good chapter. Tokiyuki is growing-up.
Witch Watch - Hilarious chapter and that duel at the end 😂

Fine:
Candy Flurry
- Well, it was a fine start, but nothing really interesing imo.

Meh:
I tell C
- That is just awful...

Right. I mean, it’s nothing squicky, but it would be a weird situation for them, being what, half-cousins? It would be just so out of place from the strong start that we had. That said, I am fully expecting this reveal to happen, at which point I will just roll my eyes so far back and carry on.

Speaking of which, reminds me of the time my sis and cousin went to college together, living under the same roof (of our grandmother’s house) and everybody thought they were dating. True story.

Now this is reaching
How? Grandpa says point blank she looks like “the spitting image of (Taiki’s) grandmother”. Who also happens to be divorced from grandpa long ago. Her remarrying is not out of the question, and later down the line, Chinatsu is born.

I took it as him saying Chinatsu reminded him of Taiki’s Grandmother(his ex-wife), but not necessarily that his ex-wife was Chinats’s grandmother as well. It seemed to me he was talking to Taikil not Chinatsu.

and even if that is the case, I would imagine that grandma remarried and had a family with another man, so they’re not actually blood related. However, if they are cousins, it would make very little sense for this to have not come up by now.

Just like what savethecat said above.
Are you guys delusional enough to think the kind of development happened in WSJ?

Historic manga about a period and famous japanese person that western people knows nothing about it, i remember some complaints here in the first 2 chapters being basically "i don't want to read a history book".

If his words are taken at face value, then it is probably as you say. But it wouldn’t be surprising in the slightest if it would be revealed that way down the line. The way it was set up, it feels like a pretty blatant foreshadowing for the eventual reveal.
