Well the fact that the Reborn and Bleach anime are too close to the manga doesn't help them since they have to go into fillers.

Also Reborn's anime was extremely edited last I heard so that could factor into not as many people watching it as well.

probably more than it had last year already. that being one of the reasons i don't think it's anywhere near as big at it was. it needs constant shameless promotion to keep it where it is, much like ral grad did when that was about

Strangely enough with all of the current talk on covers, the only series that I'll actually give a pass for the year is Naruto. Considering this is the 10th anniversary (officially it's issue 43) and the hype done to promote OP's 10th and KochiKame's 30th, I consider it with a pass for the moment. Bleach...personally with all the other series dying for attention (literally), it shouldn't hog the cover as much as it does. Either it's just that easy for Kubo to make color stuff or the Jump people just find it necessary to keep promoting it even with a lot of it's content below par recently. (I just dread the monster still going in 2011...at the rate Jump has been going, if Bleach lasts that long, then it literally will have all the covers for the year for it's anniversary)

I'm at the point where I'm going to say fuck Bleach. If Jump gave naruto all of these covers for the year like Ataru mentioned I'd chalk it up to the 10th anniversary as well.

Bleach has done nothing warranting cover spots in years outside of TBTP...and I'm not even sure if the covers featured that arc or not.

When Naruto eventually ends and Bleach continues to die Jump ought to feel ashamed of themselves for neglecting all the other series that could have been bigger with a little extra promotion.

Remember, it's a business. They wouldn't put it in the cover if it wouldn't be selling so good.

Well, to be fair Bleach hasn't had a cover yet and still may not have one if Toriko's next issue preview is correct in that Toriko gets it instead. Plus, in comparison, by this time last year Bleach already had 2 covers. If Toriko does get it it'll be its second cover, while One Piece will have already gotten 2 and Naruto 3 in celebration for its 10th anniversary.

You're right. Just reviewed the color pages thus far and Bleach has had the most colors when not including new series with guaranteed color pages, although some series aren't too far behind. I'm pretty satisfied with the color pages so far though. Here's a list of current series' color status this year for those interested:

Kuroko - 5
Bleach - 4
Bokke-san, Eyeshield 21, One Piece, Naruto, Reborn, and Inumaru - 3
Sket Dance, Bakuman, Gintama, Toriko, Beelzebub, and Hoopmen - 2
Psyren, Neuro, D. Grey, Mago, To Love, and Kochikame - 1

The only series that hasn't had a color page thus far is Jaguar. Pretty good distribution of color pages if you ask me.

It's new and it's getting hype akin to Toriko/Bakuman's early run. Eventually it probably will start going downwards.

It's nice that it has been getting a push, because it's a really enjoyable series. It'll probably start to fall back towards the pack when the next batch of series start taking up color pages for a few weeks (unless Kuroko really is that popular already).

Akamaru is all about the one shots. I want to see all the new artists. Shame that only cam raws came out for the winter issue. Tanaki Yasuki's contribution looked awesome.

I'm fine with newer series(Kuroko, Toriko, Bakuman etc) and ones not as big(Psyren, Sket, Mago) getting a higher amount of color pages.

I'm only really against stuff like the big 3 and the other established hits series getting a huge amount in proportion to the rest of the mag. Bleach being the biggest offender in terms of color and covers within the past year.

Well, at the same time, it makes sense to reward popular series and artists with color pages, too. Bleach has gotten a tad too many over the past year or so, but the series like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Reborn, etc getting a good amount of color pages or covers only makes sense when you get right down to it.

I agree that it shouldn't be at the expense of other series, though.

Screw the other big series, I want D. Gray Man to get three color spreads and two covers a year. Minimum. I can keep dreaming. It was a nice gesture getting it when it came back from hiatus.

Well it all depends on how you define the significance of a colour page/cover. The purpose we usually give them is for the use of promotion and a sense of merit gained through having earned it. If the TOC was a gauge for popularity (however slanted it may be) then wouldn't it be logical that the top series get more colours/covers. Of course, they may serve other purposes, one of which may be for advertisement of WSJ itself. I think it was mentioned that usually a popular series like bleach might get a colour page because it would sell due more. That being the case, take a look at the time where Sket Dance and Psyren have received colour pages. They have received colour pages recently just as they both left their stump in the TOC and moved up, that might have been the factor that gave them the colour pages.
