last week it was in the bottom 5 ¬_¬ this week it might be. if you remove the unranks that's only a bottom FOUR

also..... KO sen is probably the worst manga to have come out of last year in my opinion, it was just so generic... what was the appeal to you out of interest?
How do you know that was not Eyeshield 21's real rank? Because of the color? What if it had gotten that rank either way without the color. By any chance are you a precog? Can you tell its real ranking even when they have a color?

I like fighting manga (sport). Most of Shounens nowadays starts in a generic way and then they branch out.

generally we've all worked out taht colours are exempt, usually spaced out accordingly throughout the anthology. so whilst your blind enthusiasm is healthy it's also..... kinda unbalanced with previous logic

no he also just hates inudash cause of the pantsless stuff and it not being psyren, so any faltering is a complete failure (i kid, i kid... or do i)

kuroko has a freakish charisma to it's advantage, gotta say i'm surprised randal doesn't like it :|
Hey, it's not like Psyren is my favorite newer manga. I just personally think Inumaru dashi has an immature concept and I don't think it deserves to live when better manga have to die for it. Bakuman actually is by far my favorite new series at the moment. =P

yeah Bakuman's pretty good, we can both agree there. and whilst the concept for Inumaru Dash is immature..... well it is a kids/teen anthology so i have no complaints XD

So Komi's one shot is called Apple, huh? Wonder what it'll be about. And, if I'm reading correctly, it gets a color page, as well :D.

Also, love the One Piece scene from years ago being thrown in there.

Yep as noodle say: there's still the fifth place above the one shot. It can be every manga except for the certitudes. But nice to see psyren is at least doing as good as last chapter/position. I look forward to sket dance's position because it seems to have gotten out of the danger zone permanently. Might be I pick it up again. Sadly it lacks decent quality scans.

I'm looking over the TOC comments (was thinking of TLing them this year but this is the first one we've got...not sure if I should)...looks like Ooshi & Matsui are welcoming back Nishi, Ohba's commenting about the end of the year (and Amano on just "entering Decmeber"), Iwashima on Jump Festa...and Sorachi about something he did with his staff and a seinen mangaka. (just the gist so far)

it'd be a good idea if the pages appear for it, especially to get us some level of familiarity with the new authors coming in.

also randal before long your sig's gonna explode with the series on it! i'd reccomend removing Sket if it's still doing alright come the next batch of series just to get a bit more room XD

I was gonna remove Sket once it gets to the two year mark. Don't worry, Asklepios will be leaving us soon. That'll clear some space.

Dunno if it had been posted yet, but I've been lurking around at 2ch and Oricon seems to have released the sales charts for 2008. (Even though it looks to me like the december sales numbers are not added yet...which would result in One Piece being even more inviolable. *lol*)

I'm not surprised by Nodame, nor by Soul Eater that was most likely helped by its anime, but seeing Reborn selling more than Bleach sure is a surprise. Thanks for pointing those out, Prince-kun~

Woah, Reborn! is selling more than Bleach in Japan? I wasn't expecting that. Nice to see Rookies up there as well.

Reborn being higher than Bleach was a bit of a shock...but I think the best way to maybe get a bit of scope on the big guns of Jump is to take the biggest volumes for each series (trying to get the top 10):

1. OP 50 (end of Thriller Bark, Brook's flashback)
2. Naruto 43 (A staring contest)
3. Bleach 34 (Soul Society comes in to clean up Ichigo's mess...oh yeah, and we get half-naked Neliel on the cover)
4. HxH 25
5. D.Gray-man 15
6. Katekyo Hitman REBORN 20 (with the way Bleach didn't sell as many volumes, I'm a bit surprised Reborn's biggest volume was below Bleach's)
7. Gintama 24

They don't really have any other Jump series below them...

Keep in mind Bleach's final volume of the year came out this month while Reborn's came out in November and those numbers seem out of date by about a month. Volume 36's first week numbers were about 500,000. Volume 22 of Reborn sold about 320,000 copies. D. Gray Man 17 is not on this list and had (barely) better first week sales than Reborn 22. Now that I think about it, I wonder where DGM is on that list; every volume charted higher than Reborn. Naruto crossed 900,000 copies sold last week, One Piece 52 (not on these lists) sold over a million copies in one week.

Popularity based on sales should look something like this:

1. One Piece
2. Naruto
3. Hunter x Hunter
4. Bleach
5. D. Gray Man
6. Reborn
7. Gintama
8. Eyeshield 21
9. To Love Ru

D. Gray man and Reborn are very close. The difference in first week sales was about 20,000 copies, a very small percentage of each series total sales. The difference between Gintama and everything below it is quite substantial.

Oricon Charts 12/3 - 12/9 Includes One Piece, Bleach, D. Gray Man, Gintama, Claymore, Neuro, Kochikame, Double Arts, Naruto, Shaman King Deluxe.

Oricon Charts 11/4 - 11/10 Includes Naruto, Reborn, Eyeshield 21, Yu - Gi - Oh GX, Kurenai, Toriko, Matsuri Special, Shaman King Deluxe

One Piece does bad things to like... every other manga in the country, thankfully. I never realized that it was SO big, even in Japan. It really makes me wonder at the kind of popularity Dragon Ball commanded 20 years ago. (Manga as a whole was more popular and sold better then.) And with Reborn selling more volumes then Bleach, I think we can say that Bleach has officially been dethroned. It's claim as one of the Big 3 always seemed the weakest, and if you look at Tables of Contents for the last 6 months or so, it seems that Bleach has had to defend its position from Reborn and Toriko. I know that Bleach's final volume's data hasn't been compiled yet, but still, it seems too close to say that Bleach is really comfortable.

I'm really trying to figure out this list and what it means. 20th Century Boys outsells Nana of all series, despite the last volume coming out two years ago. Reborn outselling Nana? Nana? Really? Rookies has sold the tenth most copies of any manga this year despite ending five years ago. I know there's a TV drama airing right now but that kind of push is ridiculous. Reborn and 20th CB somehow sell more copies then Nodame Cantobile. Wow. Now look at the second list, top selling single volumes. Somehow Reborn, 20th Century Boys, and Rookies are three of the ten best sellers in 2008 but don't have a single volume in the top twenty? Number twenty, Kimi ni Todoke, sold 649,089. 20th CB and Reborn had to have sold less then that or they'd have made the list. So I want to know how their total sales are higher then Nana, which had one volume sell 1,645,128 copies another sell 1,431,335. Click the Oricon link for the second list. All of Reborn's volumes are between 25 - 50. Only one sold better then 600,000 copies. In comparison Bleach sold 700,000 or more of three volumes. Volume 32 seemed to be completely rejected and sold way under average. The second list is definitely the top ten best selling individual volumes. I don't know what the first list is. It is produced by Oricon as the link indicates. It is the top ten of something, it is clearly not the top ten series by total sales.

Of interest to me: compare D. Gray Man and Reborn in the top fifty. There's no separation sales wise. They basically alternate volumes, the biggest gap between being in 20,000 or so. I knew they were close, but that's closer then I thought. There's sales are nearly identical.
