For those who were talking about Toriko being or not the next hit, I think this makes it quite obvious:

second one es21, gintama, reborn, kochikame
third one to-love, bakuman, mago, yushagaku?

or do you not count the 'big 3'+1 as the first tier? ._.
I'd have a hard time believing to-love to be higher placed than es21, gintama or reborn (or kochikame )

Jaguar not Yushagaku. And i wouldn't hold any stock in how they're laid out excluding the middle row of big pullers

Well... Reborn, gintama and es21 could be said to be in one 'group' at least... but yeah, I wondered whether there's any significance to it too... especially with D.Gray-man and Hunter x Hunter being absent from the page due to (obvious?) reasons...

Somehow I think Toriko wouldn't have gotten the bottom middle place if Hunter x Hunter would've been there... it would fit into the 'row of exempts' pretty well after all xD


but yeah, there's no real reason to read much into it...

D. Gray Man and Hunter x Hunter are not included as both are on indefinite, voluntary hiatus. Same reason neither was on the double issue covers. The "second tier" thing was more of a fun, subliminal graphic design quirk.

I could totally imagine them referring to manga like that in Bakuman. "We could never touch their series! It's in a realm of it's own!" XD

It did not get a single cover in 2008. Not one issue. It did get center color twice last year.

Wasn't it supposed to have the cover once (issue 41?) and some other series got it, although DGM was still #1?

It was supposed to get the cover once last March but was bumped because Hunter x Hunter returned that week. I can't recall if it was supposed to get the cover the week of the poll results or not.

I was actually about to do a whole entry tonight on the Jump LJ page about the patterns of cover pages since One Piece started regarding what was big and what wasn't...but I started going crazy in finding patterns that may/may not exist so I stopped. But essentially looking things over, here's a few notables I found:
-KochiKame: What I'd like to call "old reliable", Ryotsu is usually out front unless there are other, bigger series out there (well mostly it has to do with the KochiKame anime that aired for most of this period). If there aren't any big hits as some of the others leave, be prepared for Ryotsu to retake his post.
-One Piece: Outside one "semi-front but not really" in New Years, 1998, OP has been essentially the leader of the pack on every group cover since it started.
-Takeshi: Sort of started strong, gained front-cover prominence from early '99 and didn't let go...until Shimabukuro's incident forced the series out.
-HxH: Had a strong period from '98 (practically from the start) to about '01...when Togashi began to get strange.
-Hikaru no Go: Essentially from New Years '00 to the end of the series, Hikaru was near the front practically the entire run of the series.
-PoT: While Ryoma really hasn't been super-prominent in some ways, he had a short period mostly around '02-'03 of relevance.
-Naruto: Outside New Years '00 when it was in the back row, it was sort of a 2nd tier series from the get-go and didn't solidify as the big gun in the magazine until the anime started. (meaning Naruto's been big since about early '03 and hasn't been pushed back since)
-Bleach: A really strange bird: Ichigo essentially was "small pic" or "last row" from the series start to '03...and then suddenly on the "monkey cover" in early '04, Ichigo is front and center...and hasn't really left since. (and this was even before the anime started at the end of the year)
-ES21: While some could say it was second-tier, Sena did have prominence for a good chunk of time, particularly '05-'07. You could have called it a "big 4" then!
-Reborn: The baby's had some prominence but moreso since around '07...but never is big enough to topple Luffy, Naruto or Ichigo.
-Toriko: Yeah...we sort of see from the recent covers that it's for real and taking up the main 4th spot now.

There probably are others I'm not even considering or not going into right now (Yugi & Yoh were both a bit strange...and you sort of can make weird assumptions regarding Bo-bobo, Allen or Gintoki), but I think that essentially covers over the last ten or so years.
