I do hope DGM's being ranked. I really do. That'll teach Hoshino for making this arc. :notrust

All right, that's a bit extreme, but seriously, this is definitely not the best arc ever. Having the hiatus in the middle...

Very depressing to see Psyren and Sket so low, but at least there are still glimmers of hope for them. Bokke wasn't in the bottom due to a colour page, To Love-Ru is still below (are its sales good enough to keep it alive? I know DGM was at the bottom for a while, but it sold better than TLR), and ES21's in the bottom six... and probably ending soon. So at least they probably won't be cancelled for this horrid week.

Agree about KHR not needing more colour pages. Isn't there anything else that might've deserved them? Another authour that could have drawn one? =/

D.Gray-man ranked or not deserves to be in the basement. This current arc blows and was a bad move on Hoshino's part.

Ok negatives aside, I really like that Bokke got a color this week. The series had an unexpected event so early that I wasn't expecting and I think it may start taking off from this point.

I'm happy to see Mago out of the bottom. I wonder if it got to mid-status or is just above the bottom 5?

Neuro climbing out as well is interesting. I'm only about halfway through the series now so I've been wondering how the later story developments. Being in the bottom of the ToC more frequently and all.

Surviving in Jump is becoming harder and harder, with so many new series starting to survive. A while ago it was onlySket Dance, Mx0 and To-love ru. Then it turned into Sket dance, Psyren, Mago, Inudashi, Toriko, Bakuman, bokkesan, kuroko and other series all in a giant clusterfuck trying to survive and knock the others down...

Personal thoughts:
-Somewhere there's someone with a cruel sense of humor against certain series over a year (see Psyren and Sket)
-Neuro not in the bottom as it's essentially in end-game...makes good in my head that it could essentially be the "Houshin Engi" of the modern age (as in: it seemed bottomed out but could be a respectable cult series post-ending)
-Happy B-day Mago...that's all I can say for that
-And next week...no, "giving Bleach another color so soon after a poll result" shouldn't fly...ever. It still had a color page. (and let alone considering that this week's "next issue" didn't have Bleach again, I'm starting to wonder if Jump wants to keep it in the top 3 fearing it's losing profile to Toriko) Oh...and KochiKame being on the cover pretty much means it's been another 50 chapters for Ryotsu, therefore it is another anniversary of longevity.

Couldn't have asked for a better chapter for DGM's returns. Very well done, very interesting. Her action arcs always start off slow but as they go along she puts a lot of emotion into them. Besides, rankings almost don't count for DGM. At least not so long as it's one of the top sellers in the magazine.

I don't mind Hoshino's fighting arcs. Its just that this one came at a weird point in the story and focuses on a character I can't give a damn about.

But yeah, I guess DGM's ToC rank is probably irrelevant at this point since it sells well. That and To Love Ru maybe. I'm not quite sure if it is deserving of immortal status like HxH though.

Color pages >.<

not ranked >.<
Oh wow, how did I forget that Mago had color this time? I think that means its time for me to sleep.

Favoritism. :nerve

Even One Piece and Naruto don't have this high frequency like Bleach currently does.

I think Bleach has a real threat of dropping out of the top 3, they dnt want this.

*thinks timmys a good character outside of his innocence activated form, though the noah looking innocence's spirit is the true awesome factor*

and not just of slipping out of the top 3, with Bakuman becoming a solid series it could drop to the bottom of the top 5. not to forget that reborn, gintama and kuroko could all rise to such an occasion and beat it down.

bleach has passed the peak, i think without even heavier promotion it'll drop to mid tier. HOPEFULLY

As it currently stands, Bleach is the weakest link of the big guns. Until Toriko and Bakuman came along, it seemed a secure 3 with nearly everything facing it since it's ascencion nowhere near it (talking of ES21, Gintama, Reborn and D.Gray mostly). But with Toriko regularly 3 after OP/Naruto and Bakuman starting to eat away at it too, someone out there is probably worried. There really is nothing to be worried about currently since Bleach is still quite popular but it has to be strong enough to knock it out of it's consistant place in the "next issue" section...and to keep giving it these color pages.

Thing is they were pimping it way before Toriko came along. When Toriko came out in May Bleach was already a color page whore. Having to guess I would say Kubo is always ready to produce a spread and first page in color no matter what. If this were about Bleach being passed the editor in chief would be damn sure to get Toriko the extra color and promote what's hot.

Liking DGM's current arc is a matter of taste, I guess. It was just such a sudden jump in the story, and to an arc that started off being light-hearted comedy... I thought Jump readers would like it, seeing as they rated the previous crack arc fairly high, but I guess not. And maybe they're just picking on the hated action again.

It's not at HxH level, but I'm inclined to think that it (and probably KHR, by extension) isn't going anywhere unless Hoshino finally can't write anymore. Makes me wonder where that cutoff is - how much does a series have to sell before it becomes essentially "untouchable" and ratings, as well as long breaks, don't make it potential cut material. Is To Love-Ru at that level?

Sure seems that way, D.GM does seem rather untouchable due to it's popularity outside of the manga.

DGM is a huge series. It averages 550 - 650,000 copies sold per volume. If it were in Shonen Magazine it would be, by far, the most popular series. The number of series that out sell it is so small I can list them without boring everyone: One Piece, Nana, Nodame Cantobile, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach, Hunter x Hunter, Kimi ni Todoke. Reborn, along with Conan, Pluto, and Vagabond have virtually identical (by volume) sales. Given that, it would be really hard for Shueisha to cancel it over the fan polls. Despite the fact that readers aren't voting for it, a lot of them are buying it. When you consider that publishers make all of their profits off tankobon, that matters more then the TOC. To Love Ru does not sell as well. It sells well for what it is; an ecchi/harem series in a kids magazine. By the standards of lower expectations it's a nice size hit. It's also by a mangaka with a long history with Jump, both as an assistant (to Obata no less) and as an artist in his own right.

This has been posted before but for a little context: top 25 volumes of 2008, continued through 50.

I think Hoshino is one of the best Jump artists I've seen.

DGM definitely is top-tier when it comes to art, but apparently that's in large part to Hoshino's inordinate amount of assistants...or so I heard.

The current arc is OK IMO, and Timothy's Innocence is unique, but introducing a new (what seems to be) main player in the story, right after an epic arc seems out of place entirely. Either the current arc has some sort of tie-in with the Ark or Noahs, or it'll probably seem bizarre in retrospect.

I think Kubo is just proficient at churning out colors...doesn't mean it's right though.

And Psyren better get the lead out it's ass....or rather, it's fans with postcards better get the lead out of their asses. It would be devastating if it was canceled at this point in the story, I'd say even more devastating than Mx0 ending it's run abruptly.
