To be honest, that's the only reason I care for Tank releases lol, well asides from the sales themselves.
I'm talking about actually buying the tanks, not just noting the release...

Tanks can sometimes be pretty decent to buy. For instance, some authors love to include omake pages (The World God Only Knows, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and ToLoveRu are two good examples). Also, some authors would have major redrawing of the chapters in tanks (HxH, ToLoveRu, Bastard!, DeathNote, etc.).

Finally, buying the tanks is a major way of showing appreciation to the author in my opinion... (which is the main reason why I purchase several shoujo series even though I'm already buying the magazine they're serialized in...)

Does another else feel Toriko isn't really up to top three caliber? I mean, it's not like the manga in the top three are amazing, but it just doesn't feel like the type of series that would get tons of retarded fans for them.

The same could be said of One Piece. In fact, Mayumi Tanaka DID say the same thing of One Piece, and she now voices Luffy. Toriko is still an action/adventure series, which is practically a requirement for being in the top tier of the magazine. Sure, it's more screwball and inventive than most action series, but there were a lot of atypical action series' that have been in the top, I don't see why Toriko can't be one. But time will tell. Part of being in the top is having high ToC placement AND high tankobon sales, and while Toriko seems to have the first covered, it doesn't sell an absurdly high number of tankobon, Nurarihyon and Bakuman sell just as many, if not more. Time will tell if Toriko will achieve real top tier popularity.

Keep in mind their has only been 3 volumes released, two on the same day. Held to that standard it's selling very well. And it's already been nominated for a major award, the Manga Taisho. While it may not be ready to take it's place alongside One Piece and Naruto, chances are it will. Considering it's in the "pre - Grand Line" phase of it's plot now, Toriko is only going to get better.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

I personally think longevity trumps temporary popularity. A few series managed to come close to OP, but never stayed long up there (see PoT, ES21, Yugioh). Naruto, on the other hand, had been a pretty consistent #2 for a long time.

Although Bleach's #3 status has been replaced by Toriko at the moment, it's not so much that Bleach is in the decline, but rather Toriko's really "HOT" right now in terms of ranking. It's safe to say that Bleach's following is still decent.

Toriko... it's hard to say if it'll stay up there for long or not... From the look of tank sales, I'd say it's in good shape.

You forgot Bleach. :p (Just kidding; I know you left out on purpose)

Anyway...since I have been paying attention, 7 series have been added to the magazine (starting with Chagecha and Asklepios) and all but three have been cancelled. Two are "hits" and one is on the chopping block. So that really means two are left out of seven. Two new ones are coming soon. Statistically, does anyone have an opinion on which will make it or will both be cancelled eventually? I personally hope that Akaboshi does well (main character looks awesome and art is nice), but the fact that Medaka Box has a well known author could give it more life.

ps. When I say "survive," I mean the series lasts for more than 20 weeks. Who knows what will happen after that...

On the subject of Toriko, I'm already seeing a lot of the excuses to not read it that are used against One Piece. It irritates me to no end. So I'm not sure if it will translate well over to the Bleach and Naruto crowd that much.

I think it would appeal to the Part 1 Dragonball and One Piece fans a lot more. Of course if most One Piece fans become Toriko fans as well that would at least keep it flying high in Japan I think.

no mago makes me go grrrr
What are you talking about? Rikuo is on the cover (top left, next to Inumaru) as well as eating near the camp fire, while Tsurara is near the merry-go-round.

I guess you guys have a point. One Piece was TERRIBLE from the first part that I read (Fucking black cat and clown pirates >_<). I never got to the supposed good part. Bleach sucked really bad at first too. Naruto I thought had a good first arc though. I guess Toriko just needs time to develop it's characters more.

But in other news, someone posted this on the livejournal:
I just read that JUMP is going to cancel DGM because of Hoshino´s plagitarism. She copied the character design of (for example) Obata and he got pissed.

"So Hoshino got caught plagiarizing a long time ago but the charges were dropped. However, now she once again got caught plagiarizing a character of Takeshi Obata and he's now seeking justice. Thus, Jump has announced, along with the hiatus, that re-serialization of the series will be undetermined."

Anyone think it could be true? It seems pretty plausible.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

Its been discussed all over. When you compare the 2 panels that is extremely hard to deny that kind of accusation. Plus, this isn't the first time she has had plagiarism accusations thrown her way. Although the panels/color spread in question then were nothing near what we are seeing here with Obata's character.

It really will be saddening to see it canceled. I honestly don't think DGM should die just because of this. Just handle the dispute internally without canceling please. x[

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

Bah, that topic again >____>

Although, I do see the problem with the first pic. It's clearly too much copied from the original design.

But I have to stress that not every freaking similar looking panel has to be plagiarism. If you want to see true plagiarism look at Kayono who not only 1:1 traced copyrighted images but also copied complete pages and panel structures AND won the trial initiated by one of the victims by connections.

I would call the second image rather to be inspired by the King of Bandit character but it's neither traced nor so directly copied that you can call this stealing. There is plenty of literature and other media that is clearly based on, inspired by or adapted from something else. What's with all those homages and hidden references, all plagiarism? Technically every fanart is breaking copyright law as well as everyone of us who uses the character design of someone else as his/her avatar and signature.

Btw, here are the images from Hoshino's previous plagiarism problems:

Just scroll down a little.

Just looked through Blust. While it does seem kinda boring, Murata's designs translate pretty well in to an action series and the art was easily the highlight.

If he could get someone on the story again something like this might not be too bad.

Not thrilled that Psyren and Mago are in the bottom five. Psyren has been one of the top 5 series since January IMO. But Tegami Bachi is officially (who didn't know this was coming!?) getting an anime so I don't care about much else. A better manga then anything in Jump, besides One Piece.

Technically Psyren isn't, there's actually six listed there excluding Jaguar, so it's in pretty much the same spot it was last week.

Unless one of the others isn't getting counted either.

Technically psyren isn't it the bottom 5 as galactic said. Kinda strange they suddenly give the bottom six, so I'd assume the bottom 5 is sure and people at 2ch are quite sure for psyren being the sixth one :p or might it be, as stated, that one of those 5 isn't rated for some unobvious reason

Tegami Bachi was going to happen, considering the OVA it got, though it seems there is the TLR colour page, also clear cut. Psyren and Sket both fell back to the bottom which is also pretty saddening. Though Sket should see a rise as it hits chapter 80/81, I don't know about Psyren to make a similar statement.

Medaka starts but boo @ Bleach color.

Jesus christ, this is a very depressing bottom to see. Actually, I think the next few . Sket, Psyren, Mago etc. Even if Psyren isn't technically in the bottom it is far too close to it for my liking. x[

Well Hoop is a sacrificial lamb it seems and we still have Eyeshield 21 to end soon so hopefully the other series will be fine until the next cut.

Also To Love color page next week and Tegami Bachi anime are good to see. :D

Nah, the spoiler poster, ko-neta, just decided to do a bottom 6 instead of bottom 5 for this issue.
