Hatsukoi Limited and Blue Dragon Ral Grado throw a wrench in that formula muwlove.
Hatsukoi's and Blue Dragon's ranking was high, they never went to bottom 5, they are in middle or high position and stayed on bottom 5 on about six or seven weeks before it ended. So, actually they are going in same formla as Bari Haken and Double Arts.

Nothing will be cut next week, the announcement would have come with the color pages post.
The announcement about end of series is revealed on bottom 5 post, not on color pages post. And I think Medaka possibly end on two weeks after, not next week.

In change of subject, is number of positive and/or negative comments reflect the popularity of series? Medaka and Ane Dokii have more negative comments than Akaboshi and Kagijin.

And where are the negative comments from and why would the editors at Jump be reading them?

They wouldn't, kaiten already implied this so I won't get too into it. Long story short,
Popularity outside Japan =/= Popularity in Japan (the people who truly matter here)
I mean, take a look at Bleach, as many negative comments people online bombard it with, it's doing pretty damn well for itself.

He could be referring to a Japanese fan site of some sort. Probably not the post cards, any comments on those aren't released publicly. But since nothing else is official, nothing else matters.

Look at Medaka in this thread and the LJ; all the action fans hate it. It may be ranking poorly because the Japanese action fans won't vote for anything other then action series. That would also explain the poor response on Japanese fanboards to it and Ane Doki. Sket was the lowest ranked series forever because of that, lower then quite a few series that were canceled. The editors look at genre, age and gender when they look at votes. If a series does poorly with the little boys but really well with girls and older readers it's worth keeping around a little while longer, it expands Jumps pool of readers. Same goes for slice of life, romance, and comedy. They're genres not heavily associated with Jump anymore; keeping them around has the potential to attract new readers or keep old ones from migrating to Magazine or Sunday. Action and sports series in the bottom five bring nothing new to the table, and have no potential to. That's why Sket could survive the bottom five long enough to get a drama CD.

I thought we established internet popularity doesn't matter? Assuming that is where those comments are originating from. Only the people buying tanks and sending in post cards matter for the editors. -_-;

Ugh, extremely disheartening but true nonetheless.

The difference in hatred in Bleach and hatred in Medaka is different though. With Bleach, it's pretty much going to stay popular regardless and the Japanese fans will keep it high enough to keep going for who knows how long. On the other hand, hatred in Medaka, particularly in Japan, could kill it this early on. There are plenty of series that start low and slowly build up to the point they can support themselves, but any series that just starts low, stays low and all-in-all bombs pretty much is a bad thing.

As for cut theories, that's just people's speculations regardless of when the next cuts will be. When cuts are done and we're between a period, we just like speculating watching what series are doing well and what series are collapsing into the bottom to determine what/if the next cuts will be. (though it does seem rather uniform that Kagijin is probably too generic to live)

Next Akamaru will be New Years week. Not like the oneshots get scanned anymore. Which sucks, one shots can be one of the most interesting things about Jump. That reminds me: I haven't read it yet but someone scanned a one shot called Monsters that came out last June. It's super LQ but still looks like it's worth reading.
Just finished reading it. (Monsters) And it was very good. Its probably the best one shot I have read in awhile and more original than a lot of new stuff in the last year or so.

Is it from Akamaru or was it in the regular Jump magazine?

Regular Jump. I think it was part of the run of one shots that replaced D. Gray Man last June.

Well, it was good. I could see it as a running series though I don't know if too much time has passed for it to still have a chance at getting serialized.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

It's weird, the one shot just came out in June and it's already getting serialized. The one shot of Medaka was only 10 weeks old when chapter 1 dropped, but Medaka has a famous author attached.
I know I'm behind on this, but the Lilienthal oneshot was in issue 51 of last year. It only had a June date here on MH because that's when the particular file was uploaded. So, yeah you were indeed correct on your assumption that it would be weird for a oneshot to be serialized so soon, unless it was from an established talent.

Makes sense. It must have been re - upped in June after being lost when the current site went up last winter.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

I have a quick question. Is Shonen Jump shorter than Magazine and Sunday? I know there are 24 series (including Hetappi Manga and Lilienthal) in Shonen Jump, but Hunter x Hunter is currently on hiatus and Hetappin is serialized in monthly.

Magazine currently has 33 series (Kindaichi and 15 no Yoru are serialized on one arc per year, and Bloody Monday and Tobaku Haoh are on hiatus), and Sunday currently has 25 series.

Is there possible that Shonen Jump can possbily increase the pages, like in 2008?

Forgot about this, but the last group of new series are getting into their ranked sections now.

http://hamada.tsukaeru.info/jump/2009/jump0941.html

Anedoki is this week, then Kagijin, then Wajimania in subsequent weeks.

Or was it 8 weeks... I guess if it's 8 weeks previous then this week was the 9th, so Anedoki's first, then so on.

I think Ane Doki, Kagijin, and Wajima are divided to other series because there are in under 10 chapters. It is not meant for that they are unranked.

with the current down turn in the economy, i doubt it will happen.
i mean more pages = more mangakas = more $$$$$
its gonna be quite costly for Shueisha.
maybe in the near future when OP manages to boost up the sales :)

oh nice link!
i'm surprised that kochikame is so high. (probably with so many colors and covers it had lately).
inumaru is wow.... its doing so well!! it might as well be the next Big 3 if we only look at the rank.
correct me if i'm wrong, but the rankings for color & cover chapters don't really count right?

Hatappin doesn't really count, it's only 7p. When HxH comes back a series will be canceled, so it can hardly be taken into account. Magazine doesn't run every series every week, at least one series takes a week off. Tsubasa goes on hiatus frequently and Negima is bi - weekly. There's still more then in Jump but not that much more.

They could expand the page count for more advertising but I doubt they would expand two years in a row to avoid canceling series. They probably only want to pay so many mangaka.

They count. When you you look at that link the only distinction made is that front color is marked red, center color orange. They are factored into the average score. There is a prescribed place in the magazine for color but when you consider that color pages are awarded to the most popular series or for special events (first two chapters, anniversaries, major announcements) the higher position is considered earned, the same way a high position based on fan votes is earned.
