Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

I hope you guys remember Wajimania is still unranked, I'm pretty sure. It's only been 7 weeks or so. It's ranked next week I think.

Toriko's the 6th ranked one, so it's in a good place... And it gets better in the following chapters.

Stuff's all warped a bit with OP being absent. It's interesting how Kuroko after being low so long got really high all of a sudden. Hopefully those guys'll continue Editing it...

Beelzebub has been high and low, never too low though. It's definitely a hit though. It hasn't been as high as Toriko though, in general.

Issue 42 will be Waji's first ranking. That will be eight chapters eight issues.

I'll get the full charts in the proper thread later, here's sales for Jump Comics September:

1. One Piece volume 55 (1,121,685)
3. Gintama volume 30 (288,225)
7. Beelzebub volume 2 (68,072)
11. Kuroko no Basket volume 3 (43,420)
16. Kochikame volume 166 (38,264)
23. Naruto volume 47 (23,262/1,092,946)
27. One Piece volume 54 (21,890/1,851,453)
29. Hikaru no Go Kanzenban volume 12 (20,698)

One Piece 53 will sell 2 million by the end of the year. It's ridiculous. Amazing that a series gets more popular after volume 50, but there you have it. Beelze improves a bit on volume one's sales; as Stranger said above it is following Toriko, establishing itself as part of the next generation of hits. Kuroko has improved enough from volume to volume that, while it can't be called a hit yet, it does appear to be on it's way. Like Mago it seems to be taking a slow, steady path to popularity. I expect it will sell almost as well as Eyeshield some day. That doesn't change how I feel about it, but it's here to stay.

if Beelze break 100 with this volume, which I think it will, we have a hit on our hand. If Kuroko can break 100k within the next volume, it's taking the same path as Mago, considering mago break the 100k mark in the second volume, which is a an amazing improvement considering it's 60k sales of the first volume.

Apparently the Kochikame drama has had mediocre rather then bad ratings. It's been averaging an 11.3 in Kanto, a little lower then expected. Or so say ANN.
Apparently, that was episode 2. It's plummeted since then, though ratings have gone down in the past few seasons to the point where it really does seem to be more mediocre than awful. Well... except for episode 4.

Funny that Kuroko starts gaining popularity as soon as it turns to complete and utter shit. *facepalm* And to think I used to like it so much...

Beelze 1 has passed 100K. It sold 90,000 after two weeks. Beelzebub's sales, so far, have been nearly identical to Toriko's. Beelze 2 will probably sell just under 200,000 by the time the next volume comes out.

I shall cheer on Beelzebub's volume sales. I would like to see it, Toriko, and Mago taking the baton as Jump's heavy hitters. Especially as older series like Naruto start to end.

And for fuck's sake, if Kuroko is here to stay asking for it not to be tripe isn't too much. We already have Bleach to fill that role and that is still one series too many. -____-

There's nothing wrong with Kuroko. It isn't One Piece or Nana, but it's a solid, enjoyable series. I mean, it certainly isn't anything ground breaking or award worthy, but it is entertaining and has a fair amount of potential. I'm glad to see it doing well.

It definitely fills the sports series void for right now, although hopefully we'll see something that's closer to the quality of Prince of Tennis or Eyeshield 21 pop up in the future.

Am I the only one who thinks that Beezle is a little over-hyped. It's great when it does comedy, but it's action scenes aren't as great as they could be. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the series, but I don't think it's so good that it ranks high most of the time.

IMO, Beelze is terrible. Its action scenes are poor and the comedy isn't funny at all. There's tons of better series running on WSJ at the moment; it pains me to see all the advertising and the CPs being given to Beelze when it doesn't even NEED that much promotion anymore. -______-

It used to be entertaining, but it isn't anymore. Not to mention the only "potential" I see in Kuroko nowadays is the potential to get even worse. At first it seemed like a great sports series with good characters and nice action was starting... but then the author showed us clear evidence that he doesn't give a shit about character development and only wants to focus on in-game action. I certainly didn't like that, but I thought to myself, "well, as long as the matches are nicely done, this will still be worth reading". But now the matches have become boring, full of stupid typical shonen quotes such as "don't underestimate me" and recycled ideas ("eagle's eye" became "falcon's eye"? I mean... really?).

The later chapters didn't show any signs of improvement either. The end to the Shutoku match was so bland and predictable it made the rest of the match seem like a huge waste of time. I don't even know why I still bother to read the raws when they come out. It's as Kaiten said: sports manga fans fans are better off reading Ahiru no Sora. Now THAT'S basketbal done right. It's such a shame the Manga Editors haven't released a new chapter in ages...

29. Hikaru no Go Kanzenban volume 12 (20,698)
While I wish Kuroko was selling a little better, I guess it's sales will be decent enough to keep it around until a new, possibly more popular, sports manga comes out.

Also, does anybody else find it funny that One Piece surpassed Naruto (which has been out for a month) in its first week of sales? I don't know why, but it amuses me. For some reason, I thought Naruto sold better than that.

Considering Naruto is a million seller I can't really look down on it for that. Says a lot about how popular OP is.

Yeah, especially when you consider that it's previous volume is still charting after three whole months have passed. Amazingly, it's popularity only seems to keep increasing. And Naruto still trumps pretty much every other manga except for Nana.

OP, Nana, and now FMA outsold Naruto. Nodame at time also outsold Naruto. In the top manga sales of 2008, Nodame vol 21 and 22 outsold Naruto vol 42 and 43

I don't, but for some reason I was thinking it generally sold just short of 1.5 million per volume. And yeah, One Piece's popularity is ridiculous, I mean it's on the chart twice :p.

I just looked at the full rankings now, and it almost even surpassed FMA in its first week. I wonder how much money Oda makes. Do they publish mangaka salaries anywhere?

Hopefully salaries are kept private. I'm one of those people who thinks it's tacky to tell people what I make (not much >.<) or ask what they make. It's bad enough we have to know athletes salaries. All the same Oda may as well just print his own money. He wrote the government the check for their stimulus :p

It's kind of hard to find fault with any of the million sellers considering only five sell that many every volume. One Piece, FMA, Nodame, and Naruto are the elite. If one sells better then the other, One Piece aside, the difference is basically academic. Naruto will soon be the elite of the elite of the elite, it will join the 100 million copy club sometime in the next two years. It's currently at 94 million.

I don't, but for some reason I was thinking it generally sold just short of 1.5 million per volume.
Naruto has gotten that high, generally it's closer to 1.2 million.

If anyone really wants to discuss manga sales without having to bother pretending to discuss WSJ, there is a thread for that. I posted the full top thirty yesterday and the thread could use some traffic :)
