Personal Statement
From a young age I have always known that it would be a science-based subject I would study at university. The first year of my A-Level Biology course really opened my eyes to how much potential genetics offers to the world and to how much is still unknown about it. My particular interest is how mutations arise and whether they can be used beneficially to help fight disease, rather than cause it.
In my first year of college I studied AS Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Statistics and Photography. I decided to discontinue studying Photography in my second year, though I achieved a top grade, because I wanted more time to focus on my more academic subjects. Biology is definitely the subject I take the most interest in, chemistry coming a close second, as they both have very close links.
I am part of the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth and chose to do courses in Earth Sciences and Figure Drawing, as science and art were the two subjects I was most passionate about in school. I was also chosen to be a prefect in my last year which gave me greater responsibility and confidence.
Outside of college I have a part time job as a waitress at a local pub, which entails handling money, dealing with customers and preparing basic foods. This requires a great amount of responsibility and concentration, and though often put under stressful situations, I still find it very enjoyable. Not to mention it has also taught me valuable skills in teamwork. In addition to working, I lead an active social life and take a particular interest in music and literature, especially of Japanese origin.
Seeing within the last few years how important Genetics is becoming in the field of Science, I would love the opportunity to be part of this advancing front, and what better university to study at than, what is other known as, the Institute of Human Genetics.
This is a subject I have been interested in for many years now and from looking at the course content I am sure this is the best choice for me and I’m sure I will thoroughly enjoy it.
