Re: Where do you come from? - discussion

@ genkigemini: is it true that there are 6 months of day and 6 months of night in Alaska... or is just an urban legend?

@the_hellbringer: I can tell you that its totally a myth. How can any place in the world have half the year day then half the year night. It might not be that extensive but they do have very long periods of alot of sun and a couple hours of night and vice versa. All this according from my friend that moved from Alaska here in So Cal

Well, I can tell you this... it is not 6 months and 6 months but for about one month in the summer, the sun never really sets... it just gets like dusk from about 1am-3am and then it is sunny again. In the winter, the sun comes up for about 3 hours in the middle of the day but going to and from work and most of the day is dark. It really is odd.

Summer is cool because you sleep less and have more time to do fun things. I love the snow so winter is cool but it is REALLY hard to get out of bed when it is pitch dark outside. ^_^

Hope that helps! ^_^

Re: Where do you come from? - discussion

Thanks for that info. Yu should work in the alaska tourist information office or whatever... hahaha.

I'm picturing Alaska as a lot of green (plants) and a lot of white (snow), Eskimos in there igloos, animals like mooses, bears, wolves, seals, etc.
And in the middle of all that, some cities. Those cities aren't small... but they aren't biiig cities.
Is that close to the truth?

Actually, you have a really good idea of Alaska. We have lots of green in the summer and lots of white in the winter. ^_^ Right now, things are just starting to turn a little yellow.

There was a mother and baby moose in my yard the last few days and in the winter, they sleep in my yard. (I live about 5 miles outside of town so we get more animals than the "in town" people.) I commute into Anchorage everyday for work which is about 50 miles each way and that is where I see even more moose, bald eagles, etc. There are TONS of bear around but I have never sought them out so I have yet to see one. ^_^

Alaska really is beautiful and a million times better than California which is where I am originally from. The mountains are amazing! I love going to see Mt. McKinley. It really is amazing! I have some of the coolest pictures. You should definitely visit here someday.

(BTW... I worked for a hotel when I first moved here so I have done the tourism industry. LOL However, I really do just love it here. ^_^ I feel dorky to be so into my home!)

Don't feel dorky. I'm so into my home too. I think Peru it's a beautiful country with a lot of culture and nature and one of the best gastronomy in the whole world.
You too should visit here someday.

wow, that's really weird. like it's never really night nor day during those times. i get wad u mean when it's hard to get out of bed. I live near the equator so I don't have all those climatic changes but whenever it rains in the morning, which is A LOT these days, I just feel like snuggling in my bed and never waking up. :amuse

Our werid days are because we are so close to the north pole. One you get into the arctic circle (About 6-7 hours North of here) then you get the true "No day" and "no night" during the dead of winter and middle of summer.

For pictures I have taken of AK, click the spoiler button! :tem

Lake Lucille, AK

A moose in my front yard

Hope you enjoy the pictures. I have more too but I am sure no one cares. LOL :darn

Re: Where do you come from? - discussion

Bull Moose (the males) can become aggressive during mating season and will even run at cars in extreme situations. The female moose are aggresive when they have babies. They have been known to stomp people to death so you MUST keep your distance. (for example, when they are outside the house, it is best to stay inside) However, in general, they are pretty and really cool to watch. They are mellow animals that are totally down with just eating leaves and walking around. LOL ^_^

I should so do a documentary! LOL!! :darn

That's it, I'm taking a tank the next time i go to Alaska. :XD
Have they attacked without any reason, for instance, seeing someone walks by?

Re: Where do you come from? - discussion

Only in VERY rare circumstances. Normally, they avoid people and honestly, if you are in town, you probably will not see one anyway. Winter is when they mostly are seen in more public places but it is still not an everyday occurrence. Where I live, you see them more often. :darn

I'm not gonna take a chance on that "VERY". :XD
But you're so lucky to be living there. There's no snakes in cold places, is there? And what about rats? Are there rats (or other pesky rodents) in Alaska?

Re: Where do you come from? - discussion

No snakes, yeah! ^_^

Yes, we do have like field mice and stuff but it is no big deal. The mouse trap in the garage caught one last year but we live in the freaking woods so I guess it can only be expected.

I definitely feel blessed to live here. Moving to Alaska was the best decision that my hubby and I ever made but it is definitely not for everyone. ^_^

You wish, Az. The only animal known to attack zombies are dragons and dinosaurs, look what happened to them. :XD

Re: Where do you come from? - discussion

hehe You know genkigemini, I can't imagine living in Alaska. Probably I'm not so fond to such "beauty" :D :p Your really brave to live there, so I have a question: you moved there because you "must" or you "like" to live there? xD
