That scene where Robin changed her mind and decided to go back to the crew instead of sacrificing for them made me fall in love with OP completely and showed what OP was about. The crew made an enemy of the World Government just for Robin, and it made her happy that she was loved and wanted. That scene had so much manliness and don to it! :')

Robin because she had to endure her loneliness much longer than others. The way she laughed and cried ( Rishishi......) at the same time leaving on a boat from ohara broke my heart and vengeance against cp9 and akainu increased. Then when she said " i wanna live and take me to the sea with you" was the best and i cried more than robin, dammit.
Brook actually suffered much longer than robin. He spent 50 years alone on that boat filed with the corpses of his friends. That is more than the entire time robin has been alive. Still, probably better alternative than the genocide/unilateral-extermination the ohara folk went through.

Oh you are right. But brooks lose was not that bad, i still think the laboon story is a bit too lacking. He is also someone that can never get stronger cuz he has been alive for long and he has been training for 50 yrs and is still weak.

Obviously Robin is the popular choice, but I am surprised more people aren't mentioning Chopper.

Chopper's flashback was horrible and lacking, and it was not as bad as Robin's or Nami's. Chopper had the old hag, but Robin and Nami had no one, and Robin couldn't trust anyone as she could be betrayed anytime.

Hmm... again, it's the whole apples and oranges concept. Each of the backstories had different ways of being bad. I'm not sure what's lacking about any of them, apart from general happiness. Chopper had the old lady, but he was also shunned by his fellow reindeer for his blue nose, then attacked by humans once he ate the Devil's Fruit. He had the sadness of being misunderstood, persecuted, and the only one of his kind since birth. Then, he experienced the extreme guilt from accelerating the death of his mentor, Hiruluk, by accidentally giving him a poisoned mushroom.

Robin's sadness is quite similar in many respects. She was also shunned, although she went through the eradication of an entire village and constant persecution afterwards. She tried leaving the crew for their benefit, which is exactly what Nami did in different circumstances. To some extent, the crew members have experienced a piece of each other's pain. Even though Brook doesn't have Robin's past, the fall of his entire crew to disease has comparable sadness to the destruction of Robin's village. At the end of the day, loss is loss. It's what makes Zoro keep his promise to Kuina and Sanji keep his word about feeding starved individuals at sea. Even Usopp's compulsive lying is deeply rooted in his past as an orphan, but he turned it into a great ability for stories that made Kaya happy.

The Strawhat crew is so spectacular because each of them can comprehend each other's pain based off of their own experiences, even if they haven't had the exact same tragedies. And Luffy's da man for making sure none of his nakama return to those dark places ever again. Oda's construction of their friendship is a true masterpiece.

In Alabasta Robin was in her last moment, she didnt even care if she survived or not because she was fed up of all this. thats what makes it really sad.

Luffy is the MAN who saved her, as always!

Yeah!
I don't usually cry when I read a manga or watch an anime, but the "I wanna live" really got me hard.
I get tears just thinking back to that moment.

Really the strongest moment for me in this manga, alongside the entire annihilation of the crew by Kuma and Luffy's helplesness in saving his friends.

I rarely cry with movies, animes, or books. Then I watched the episodes about Brook's past with Laboon. The part where they were trying to abandon Laboon on purpose got me, on top of the crew's death and all the ensuing devastation. It wasn't remotely the most intense point in One Piece, but it was still soo sad. I really don't know how Oda does it. You think it's a happy-go-lucky series and then BAM. It's sad as hell.

Yeah, the crew's annihilation was also tough to watch. The helplessness and Luffy's solitude... gahhh
