There are some characters in FT whose stock has taken a nosedive. The world of magic is harsh, and fortunes turn in the blink of an eye. Some who didn't came close to living up to the hype, and others who didn't even have a proper chance to begin with.

Which of these have been the greatest disappointment in your opinion?

Jellal

If you are too young to remember, or only got into FT not long ago, there was a time when Jellal's fan base seriously rivals that of Laxus'. Seems hard to believe now, but there were good reasons why Jellal was the shits back then. Together with Ultear, Jellal was the first recurring character to appear in the manga even before Natsu or Lucy did. The closest thing to an archmage, Jellal was a true evil SOB then. He was skilled and powerful with his heavenly body magic, could trap and ensnare with his dangerous dark magic, cunning, a good actor who could play the victim card, but ruthless and decisive when it mattered.

Shortly after the guild wars with Phantom Lord was over, Jellal and his underlings captured Erza and brought her back to the ToH. A plan has already been set in motion many years back when Jellal, under the disguise of his thought projection, had infiltrated the magic council and earned a place as a wizard saint (it was a big thing then). He then managed to get most of the councilors on his side to manipulate them in firing the Etherion, and would've achieve his objective had a certain dragon slayer not attain his super saiyan mode in dragon force. In the midst of these, Jellal also became the first antagonist to kill a notable good guy.

When Jellal was reintroduced in the middle of the Oracion Seis arc, the rape face he worn previously was soon replaced with a sorrowful one. Little did we know, Jellal was neutered during his comatose state. The guy was still powerful, but the edge and mystique his character possessed has completely vanished. Apart from making use of the excuse of redemption to simp for Erza, the guy has since been reduced to a shadow of his former self.

Mira

Yes, it might be hard to believe too. But there was a time when Erza vs Mira was the second most popular discussion after Jellal vs Laxus.

When Mira first appeared, her affable nature stood out amongst a bunch of ragtag misfits. Then during the BoFT arc, Freed who has been playing most of the FT members like a fiddle with his abilities, suddenly found himself on the receiving end of the wrath of Mira when she awoke her powers for the first time in a long time. She unleashed the power of an entire river at Freed, and ended him with an attack of dark energy blast that many in the city saw. It was one of the most badass moment of the distant past. To say that was a pleasant surprise would be an understatement. In a time when Erza was starting to terrorize the readers with her BS, this quickly cemented Mira as the glimpse of hope that we could place our hopes on to end the scarlet cancer's reign of terror.

Little did we found out that did was nothing but a scheming ploy to crush the hopes and dreams of the readers in a slow, agonizing death. When Lisanna was revealed to be alive in the Edolas arc, many assumed that Mira would finally be able to forgo the guilt that was holding her back all these while and elevate herself to greater heights. And then, she got deceived and knocked out by Elfman and Ever in the very next arc. To compound misery, she then failed to beat Azuma who had yet to merge with the Tenrou tree, as Lisanna and the fans erupted in despair. Azuma, then merged with the tree, skyrocketed in power, and got defeated by none other than Erza, in ludicrous fashion.

Alas, what goes around comes around. She, who dished out a curbstomp to Freed, got curbstomped by Seilah. Mira was already having an incredibly difficult time fighting Seilah, who was doing nothing but using telekinesis to pelt her with books. She then decides to use Satan soul Sitri, and Seilah responded by going limit release and decks her with a blitz so strong that Mira is actually forced out of her transformation. She had to resort to using her brother to incapacitate her foe, which sparked the question if Elfman's offensive strength has surpassed that of his sister. Meanwhile, Seilah's dominatrix lover got her ass handed to her by her eternal rival Erza in yet another ludicrous manner.

The pill was made tougher to swallow in the 100YQ sequel when despite the numerical advantage, Mira could not defeat Lucy. Then, the majority of her fight with Diabolos was not shown before getting off-panel'd by Gray. Rather than getting our doubts cleared, Mira's performance has since raised even greater doubts than before.

Gods of Ishgar

After Makarov and Jose's fight at the climax of the Phantom Lord arc, many guesses have been made regarding the identity of the other Wizard Saints. We discovered two of them in Jellal's thought projection and the humble Jura. And this benchmark the saints to be at least as strong as the average FT S-class mage, who has extraordinary level of strength compared to most other guilds. Soon after the 7 year timeskip, we were thrust into the GMG arc where FT tried to reclaim their position as the strongest guild of Ishgar. We were treated to the revelation that Jura has grown significantly more powerful, as his feats easily outclassed his peers and together with Jellal and Laxus, were in a tier of their own.

Then, a bombshell was dropped. Jura remarked that he has attained the rank of the 5th-ranked Wizard Saint, and there was a massive gulf in class between he and the four saints ranked ahead of him. They were known as the Gods of Ishgar, and all the readers were treated to was their silhouette. This sparked the fan base into a frenzy then, as speculation was flying around. Theories were made regarding their appearances, identity, powers and relative strength compared to others. 'Surely they are stronger than Gildarts?', was the common belief then.

Well, some things are just meant to be. As long a time it took to introduce them, the same could not be said of the alarming speed they went down. It's like they were just . . . gone. Gone like the wind. Nothing left. Zilch. Nada. Hold on a sec, who are they again?

Spriggan 12

You know it. You saw it coming. Yes, this list cannot be completed without the almighty Spriggan 12.

The Shields of the Spriggan was comprised of the twelve strongest mages of the Alvarez empire who served as the bodyguards of Zeref. The stakes were at an all-time high with the fearsome country trying to expand the lands of Alakitasia. Which turns out be a facade for Zeref's hidden agenda of obtaining Fairy Heart to create a universe with an alternate timeline. It was Mashima's attempt to replicate the world war. Except that Alvarez turned out to not be the Nazis, but rather the French.

In a shounen setting, they were doomed to failure. They can be forgiven for losing the war. However, it was their performance and association with Mashima's lackadaisical writing in the final arc that gave them no chance. Most of them were arrogant, complacent, and certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed. In their defense, some of them did got bad match ups in their fights. However, the hallmark of a competent fighter is their resourcefulness to pull off a victory within reason despite poor match ups (e.g. Gray vs Ultear/Rufus/Silver). The Spriggans were overly reliant on their powers, and when the protagonists managed to find a way to work around their effects, their inability to adapt, mediocre durability and tendency to shit their pants meant they suffer a meltdown before getting destroyed.

In hindsight, 12 villains in one arc were too much for Mashima to juggle. It seems to be a numbers game at the end, and he decided to go with quantity over quality. The Spriggans could each have their own background so they are more relatable to the readers, strike a better balance between hax and physical competency rather than swinging too much to one end at the expense of the other. They could pose a genuine threat by winning the crucial fights. One of the best scenes in the Alvarez arc was when Sabertooth suffered a crushing defeat and were crucified and paraded. And when Invel froze Magnolia and Erza and co. overlooked the remains of a frozen wasteland. It shows the territorial capitulation to the readers.

Unfortunately, the Spriggan were nothing more than appetizers to Acnologia the main threat. Whatever happened to the three-way war that was hyped up?

Zeref

He comes as a package together with his team of bodyguards. Except in Zeref's case, the rot has been longer. Far longer.

One of the reasons why I could never take him seriously was his appearance. He doesn't look anything like a villain. Zeref doesn't inspire confidence, fear, strength or courage. He look like a pre-pubescent boy who has only just discovered the birds and the bees for the first time in his life. In comparison, Acno was a good throwback to the Conan the barbarian with his exotic features and primalistic swagger.

Not only does Zeref not look the part as one of the main antagonist, he does not act the part either. His behaviour is questionable, and many times when he speak, his words are not concise. Zeref is constantly flip-flopping around his intentions, and can't make up his mind what he truly wants. When he was introduced, he swiftly lost to Ultear on Tenrou island in an anti-climatic fashion. Much of his mystique disintegrated that day. He then awaken and decided to kill Hades and the rest on the airship, just because. His actions were often counter-intuitive and rarely given an explanation that we can relate to. It just felt like anything he does that is contradictory, which is everything, can be conveniently chalked up to the nature of his curse/magic. That's lazy writing. And when it keeps getting repeated, things got really tedious.

With Zeref, you soon dread seeing him and getting caught up in yet another one of his melodramatic emotional turmoil. I found myself thinking 'Ugh, not this crap again' when he spirals into his negative nancy syndrome. And for a longest recurring villain that ties in to so many of the key events that has unfolded in the series, that is simply not good enough. When I see Acno, I think 'Awesome, shit's about to go down'. The difference is heaven and earth. For all the incredible hype Zeref had, when everything was settled, he left a lot more to be desired.

Thoughts?

I'll say, every one except Natsu and Wendy at this point. No one has had a real chance to shine. Or gets used as fan service. I'm hoping for this new arc we are in and maybe improve after, I won't judge till this arc is over.
And Erza. It's all Natsu, Wendy, Erza show now
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

1. There should have been more effort put into her fights

Stop putting her into battles that are literally impossible to win. Stop having her power through anything her opponents throw at her in flame pants. Have her actually use her different armors and weapons.

More fights like Erza vs Midnight. She has the most flexible magic so why wouldn't she use it more? Give her some normal feats, cause at this point the crazy stunts she pulls off aren't even considered as such by the fandom.

2. Let her be consistently powerful

The fact Erza actually loses so many fights/needs assistance against opponents she shouldn't need assistance for only invalidates her feats further. Let her be consistently powerful and improve instead of making her seem weaker.

Her fight with Laxus was satisfactory but how about we get a fight like that she actually manages to win? Just latest chapter she lost without even putting up a fight and even her opponent disrespected her. Stop making her lose and having her opponents constantly badmouth her just to prove a point holy shit (Ajeel, Irene and now this chick).

3. She should have gotten a power up sooner.

Erza's still at her most powerful in her clear heart clothing that she had since TOH. Her most useful armor is the Heaven's Wheel which is literally the first one we ever saw. It feels like every other character keeps improving while she's stuck in a limbo, as if she's some kinda side character.

During Tartaros/Avatar all the main characters got some type of power up except her. She should've gotten something new when everyone else did, and not in a goddamn sequel.

4. Just better treatment during Tartaros in general.

This was the worst arc for Erza. She spent half the time getting tortured and humiliated. Had an off paneled fight with a character that was at that point fodder, and a two chapter fight that was made irrelevant and only served to create controversies. During all of that, the only characters she had any interactions with were Minerva and the fucking cats. Also hate they added the stupid gag about how she's apparently illiterate now.

Let her be with her friends, at least a little. Give her some big emotional moments like the rest had (Lucy with Aquarius, Gray with Silver, Wendy and Carla...). Give her some plot importance instead of pushing her to the side. If she has to be tortured, the scenes should be less fetishized. It should have a bigger impact / consequence for her character. Don't turn it comedic and wave it off in one scene like nothing happened.

5. Her romance with Jellal should've gotten more attention.

Look, I know most people here don't care about shipping, but it's more than just that. Like it or not Erza's character is connected with Jellal's. He was a key figure in her backstory and character arc. In the first half of the story they were built up as the biggest and most explicit love story of FT. The fact Gajeel's fanservice romance with Levy got more attention in the last few arcs is straight up disrespectful. You can't put so much effort into jerza, give them focus and attention, only to abandon it because... the other ship seemed more popular overseas I guess? Who cares about good writing, what's important is what the fans want amirite? 🙄

Erza's story started with her and Jellal being slaves, and it should have ended with them finally being free and living a happy normal life together. It would have been a beautiful way to end their story, had Mashima not spent so much time focusing on irrelevant romances.

These are all complaints for the second half of the story, post-GMG. I have no problems with virtually anything before that.
I agree with some of the points you mentioned. Especially the first point. Flame pants made her incredibly one dimensional and boring. Believe it or not, I actually used to like Erza in x784 lol, a big part of it was her versatility and armours; but ever since Azuma it was all downhill.

The major problem here is that, Erza's natural durability is >>>>> her armour's durability, which means armours have become completely useless. It's Mashima's fault for building her up this way, as the bullshit Mary Sue character. Just look at this - Laxus broke her lightning armour, which gives her 50% electricity resistance, with a casual no named punch and had her screaming in pain (this is after 50% reduction in damage). But then she goes on to tank named attacks from his RL mode, with zero armour? Very bullshitty. Yea it was one of her better fights, but IMHO she had no business taking Laxus to the brink, especially after what Laxus did to her with her lightning armour on.

At this point, it makes no sense for her to ever wear any armour at all. Cause all they seem to do is have negative impact, cause it seemed like she took MORE damage after wearing ligthing armour, than with fire pants lol.
UNLESS Mashima does some retcon and nerfs her natural durability, you can say goodbye to your hope of 3rd point. Cause any armour Mashima introduces will mean absolutely nothing, except for some utility (like HW for spam or Nakagami for magic bend), since Erza's natural dura >>>> armour's dura anyway. Even her tankiest armour, Adamantium, gets one shot by randoms -_-

But, Erza is absolutely not treated as a side character by Mashima. She, along with Natsu, is treated as the "anything is possible" character by Mashima. A Mary Sue. If the situation demands, nothing can defeat her. Not even losing all her sense, or crumbling all her bones.
The same is true with Natsu as well. Animus, Zeref and Wraith managed to "kill" him, like legit kill. Yet he somehow just magically revives and stomp the enemy soon after.
You may say this is terrible treatment, since it creates controversies and fans complain about Natsu. But in Mashima's eyes, there is no better portrayal than this. This is the same with what he does to Erza as well. He's made these 2 characters literally unbeatable. Natsu is his golden boi, Erza is his Golden girl.
This is something you need to understand. You complain that Mashima treats Erza bad, but the reality is that he treats no one else better than her, with the exception of Natsu. Usually gets most fight in the arc after Natsu, and usually gets most screentime & shine in the arc after Natsu. It's just that you see it differently from Mashima.

Agree with your 5th point a lot. Jerza is the only "canon" ship I like in the series, even though I don't care for either of the individual characters anymore. It was built up so well until GMG, easily the ship that Mashima built up and cared for the most until then, and then....poof. Became a fucking gag since Tartarus arc. Jellol's character itself took a massive nosedive since the end of Tartarus, and Erza......well, just Erza things lmao, just got worse.

I noticed that too and I agree. How stupid that her bare body is more durable than the armors that are supposed to be protecting it. At this point her very magic (requip) is completely useless and she's just a regular swordswoman. I don't get why the fight with Laxus couldn't have happened the very same way, except with her wearing Lightning Empress instead of flame pants. She can mix different weapons and swords anyway.
Laxus vs Erza was good, but only because the bar was so low lmao.

I honestly wish he just stuck to that "unbeatable Erza" portrayal that he started instead of retconning it. Now Erza fans are in a worst possible scenario where we have to deal with her get called both a Mary Sue and weak at the same time, feelsbadman.

That’s mostly the reason why I don’t care if Erza or Natsu are the ones fighting because they’re most likely going to win especially Natsu. I believe I said this before it’s not just because they win all the time but how they win. Of course side characters can also get bs wins as well (like Laxus and his red lightning) depends on how important the fight is

Well I thought about Erza too but some of her fans complain she's only being used as fan service and has been on a loosing streak since Tartaros arc. So I tossed her into the list of other characters. I'd say Wendy has been treated on a whole another level since the time skip. Like I said tons of my posts, I'm waiting till this arc is over to judge the entire thing. Its just Team Natsu this arc so I'll see if it improves or not.

Laxus vs Erza was good, but only because the bar was so low lmao.

But... Erza does get defeated, a lot. Unlike Natsu who is consistently powerful, Erza is constantly shown to struggle, lose and need assistance which makes it easy to completely disregard her previous feats.

Yep. Agree. At this point, how is she and say, Kagura different? They both are sword users with a magic sword, with Erza having Benizakura instead of Kagura's Archenemy. And they both have side magic that they neve use lmao- Requip for Erza and Gravity for Kagura.
She has nothing new going on for her. Her "powerup" just turned out to be borrowed shit from Wendy (Dragon Seal), Natsu & Gray (their powers on swords). It's a lose-lose all together. It's not just a lose for Erza (due to reason stated earlier), but also for Natsu and ESPCIALLY Gray.....if anyone can just use their powers by just enchanting it to some weapon, that destroys their uniqueness and diminishes their usefulness/relevance

Yea, for me the fight was over the moment Laxus destroyed her lighting armour and had her screaming in pain after damage reduction, with just a casual punch. The rest of the fight was just Erza going on cause she's Erza, like her previous fights vs Eileen and Kyouka. The fight made no sense to me.
We (or at least I) just went along with this and pretended that this fight was decent/good, only because Erza fights have such a low bar at this point lmao, to the point where we were happy it wasn't outright aids.
I would've liked her fight more, if it went the way you said. Have her fight in lightning armour and not get it fodderized casually, and fight with requiping the swords while wearing that armour.

We have gone through that before a number of times. Erza never loses clean. Laxus was her first loss, where no excuse was made; and even there Mashima pushes narrative that it was actually a draw lmao, to save face for his golden girl. While Natsu loses clean many times, where there were no excuses and just straight up got bodied.
I'm not saying there weren't fight where she was overwhelmed and would've lost, if not for some help or plot point - like Hades, Ajeel, and Eileen for eg. Point was, in the end, she never lost.
I believe your response to this was "it's because Natsu faces much stronger opponents (like main villains) than who Erza faces". While this is certainly a factor, the fact still remains that he never makes Erza take a legitimate, unexcused L. It's just Mashima protecting Erza, he doesn't want to write her actually losing as a result of being straight up overpowered.

Well I thought about Erza too but some of her fans complain she's only being used as fan service and has been on a loosing streak since Tartaros arc. Every female has fanservice in FT, Erza is no different.
She's not lost clean, ever, in the series. Laxus might be the only exception, but even there Mashima keeps pushing that it was a draw lol.

I don't know about everyone else, but I was under the impression that Erza wasn't being treated that poorly...

I mean, sure, she lost to Laxus, but I was under the impression that it was actually advantageous for her overall because now people can point to that fight to say that Erza is on Laxus' tier, which is considered to be a formidable top-tier ranking in the community.

In my opinion, it's not how many L's you take, but rather, which opponents you took the L's and W's from. For example, if Gray lost to Gildartz in the way that Erza lost to Laxus, many people would view his fighting capability far more positively.

Yep.

I'm actually quite pleased with her new enchant abilities, I think it compliments requip well and makes sense because of her origins + her close friend being able to teach her, but that's a different topic.

Erza is in no way Mashima's golden girl when she
-got ignored the entire tartaros arc, was used for fetish fuel and had the shortest MC fight
-lost fights left and right in the alvarez arc, and continues to do so in this sequel
-said fights that she lost were against low-tier spriggans, with the exception of Irene
-one of those spriggans ended up getting one-shot by Natsu
-the other spriggan she struggled with and needed assistance for got defeated by fucking Elfman and Lisanna
-even her opponents often badmouth her

The way I see it, Mashima doesn't give a fuck about Erza and uses every opportunity to make her look weak from Tartaros onwards. It doesn't matter that she "doesn't lose clean", she still loses all the goddamn time.

Literally the latest chapter proves you wrong when Mashima made Erza lose against some featless minion without even putting up a fight.

I somehow agree with your statements. The fact is that Erza was portrayed to be emprisoned into her armors due to trauma. Seeing her tougher and stronger than her armors itselves is relevant, for me, because her will and heart to fight for friends (usually) are free then. When she is in that mood, she is more warrior and focus. If I can make analogy, it's like seeing Zoro (One Piece) stronger and tougher when he puts his bandana on his head. This tissue is not a power up, but use to be for him as he can't loose to anyone to answer his dream and pact with his dead friend to be the strongest swordman in the world.

In my opinion, the fight between Laxus and Erza is great, for me the best in 100YQ for now, but still, was too quick. As the two strongest Aces of the Guild present on Aldoron, I needed more of their magic powers, versatility, strategic and then climax power. I have always see them around same power level without any circumstances, so I needed 2 chapters more : the 2 chapters I needed to see were Erza's reequip habilities vs Laxus classic Lightning. Lightning empress is not her only armor : I needed to see competitions like the speed of her velocity armor vs his lightning body, Laxus's ougi who destroyed Kyria vs Adamantin Armor... etc. Never mind if Erza lost all her armors, but still compete and manage to rival his classic Thunder. Then, Erza should pass into Hakama and Benizakura and Laxus, into his red lightning to the fight we saw.

In my opinion, the fight is great but uncomplete as we can't see all their magic's versatilities, which is the first point of Titania's Magic. But I still know as I am lucky to see this fight. I was so sad as the Grey vs Mira was off panel.

ut, Erza is absolutely not treated as a side character by Mashima.
Agree for the portraye. As you say, in some circumstances, Erza seemed to be unbeatable. Natsu faces all times the main antagonist and Erza, usually, the most dangerous opponent in critical situation : Azuma who had the entire Guild's life in his hands, Kyoka who had all wizard's life in her hands and Irene who was about to kill everyone in the Continent, or nearly. It's their role play....

Ah I see, well, I do sympathize with all the Erza fans on that one.

Alvarez Arc was particularly bad for almost all fans of any character, but admittedly, Erza did receive one of the worst treatments in terms of writing by the author.

For Tartaros Arc, I can definitely see your problem with it considering most of the other characters were treated quite well and fairly whereas the quality of Erza's fights were not on par with the rest.

I get Tartaros arc for Erza fans but what was so bad about Alvarez for them? Compared to Natsu who was out half of that arc due to END plot that lead to no where, during those times Natsu fans we're really dissapointed with his treatment. I expected big things from all that build up he had in the previous arcs including END or I was hopeful Fairy Tail vs END but yah. Erza felt more focoused, had two fights including her mom ( A power house) Introduced, heck she even stopped an attack from END Natsu vs Deamon Slayer Gray power up randomly no explained reason. Please explain how horribly treated her character was in that arc compared to others? Was she having difficulty in some fights? Yes but other than that.

The lack of quality from Erza's fights stems from the fact that many of her battles were forced, filled with PoF/plot devices, and did not utilize her magic efficiently.

Instead of having her Requip Armors expanded on with unique abilities, Mashima gave her a sword with a pair of red pants and expected her to throw herself against an oncoming meteor. Then she needed to enlist Wendy's help to enchant her sword in the hopes of beating her opponent.

Erza definitely secured a bunch of W's during Alvarez Arc, but the quality of a character's fight goes far beyond just winning/losing. I consider the quality of her fights to be quite low since they were not very realistic and relied on "borrowed" magic/power.

EDIT:

Some users in the community don't measure the quality of their favorite characters' fights by how many times they win or how much power they are capable of exerting. They want to see growth and progression in their abilities with feats that highlight their strengths/uniqueness. Which I have great respect for.

Ehh, IMO it's horrible. It devalues Gray more than he already has been. Whats the point of the guy now? The only thing that made Gray unique was his DeS magic, and now it's taken away from him. Erza can just do what he does, but with more power.
What about uniqueness of DrS? Anyone can use dragon slaying magic by temporary enchantment, but without any of the side effects?
What about Erza's own damn abilities. She's using borrowed powers instead of her own, which she has plenty to choose from. What does this suggest dude? Requip has already been shat on by Mashima since fire pants became a thing, she'd now rather use borrowed magic than requip. Erza losing against Laxus with high diff by using requips would've been more impressive in my eyes, than with extreme diff using borrowed magic. Cause Laxus made her requip look like it was fodder magic.

Tartarus was the only arc where Erza got less shine than Gray or Lucy (Lucy, along with Natsu, is the primary MC). Every other arc, she has a more impressive showing than them. Period. If you disagree, tell me how.
In Alverass arc, she got three Spriggan fights, and lost only against Neinhart - an excused L. She more than made up for it by her fight with Eileen.
Elfman was immune to Ajeel's ONLY source of damage, it doesn't make Ajeel weak. IMO Ajeel is one of the more impressive Spriggans. Also, Elfman isn't some weakling, the guy went onto stalemate Madmole, he has decent portrayal. Combine that with the fact that he's immune to Ajeel? Yea, how is Ajeel supposed to win this lmao

?? It does matter that she doesn't lose clean lol. It shows us that Mashima never want to make her lose as a result of getting outright overpowered.

Well, that's with hax. It's the same as her going down to Kyria. Natsu and Gray on the other hand, have taken Ls as a result of getting outright overpowered

Right. If it was the QUALITY of the fights they're complaining about, I'm 100% agreeing with that.

But to say that Erza is treated as a side character, or worse than any character except Natsu, is just wrong. If situation demands, she literally cannot lose. Even with zero senses and zero functioning bones, she'll still win lmao

Meh, it's just in the sword, not like she can use any of his moves or anything. She still needs to use her swordsmanship to damage her opponents unlike Gray and Natsu who can attack enemies from long range. Not a big deal to me. Agree about requip tho, too bad it became useless.

Natsu had like double the fights Erza did in Tartaros, he could've given one to Erza. She could've defeated Kyouka with Meredy's help, and then have one solo fight too instead of being stuck on Kyouka the whole arc. Her entire purpose was just to redeem Minerva (a useless character) and have her obligatory fight of the arc.

But, it's not just about getting less shine, she was pushed aside on all fronts in that arc while the other's got everything. There has been no progress in her abilities, no big emotional moments or reveals, no bonding moments with her friends, no romance development, no nothing.

And not much changed in the Alvarez arc either, except the bonding moments with her friends. There was also the reveal of Irene but that did so little for her character that it can be completely ignored.

Gray and Lucy both got treated better in Alvarez. Gray effortlessly defeated a spriggan by himself and Lucy was the key player in stopping Acnologia. Erza got beat up the entire arc and only won against a Spriggan with help. I don't think the fight with Irene made up for anything, even Irene kept calling her weak during the fight.

Erza struggling with a Spriggan that Elfman defeated makes her look like shit no matter how you put it. Elfman is not really portrayed any stronger than other mid-tier FT characters like the Thunder God Tribe. Mirajane should have helped them.
