If the Godaime Hokage were to die in the near future as Tsunade and Jiraiya previously discussed, who if anyone in Konoha would be fitting to replace her? In my eyes no one truly seems to fit the role anymore now knowing the extent of the previous Hokage power and the enemies Konoha currently face. Personally I do not believe Godamie is as powerful as her predecessors, nor her former teammates Jiraiya and Orochimaru.
The Shodai Hokage was capable of not only wood release techniques but also the ability to control tailed-beasts; no other Hokage has displayed such immense power. He also managed to fight and defeat Uchiha Madara, although I do assume he died as a result of this battle given the Nidaime Hokage appeared to have taken over while still relatively young. This is due to a flash back of Sandaime being told by the two brothers that he will one day be Hokage. It shows the both of them looking to be of similar age hinting Shodai died around that period of time. Overall I believe him to be the second most powerful of Hokage, although in some ways he probably was the strongest.
The Nidaime Hokage was shown to be immensely powerful with water techniques when he was resurrected by Orochimaru, although I believe these resurrected forms were only at a fraction of their original power similar to the technique Pein uses with Itachi and Kisame. Personally I believe Nidaime may have been at the same level as Kisame in terms of water techniques, although probably not as powerful in terms of chakra. The fact that he is the brother of Shodai also lends credit to his abilities, as they were of similar age they would of been very competitive so the power of Nidaime in terms of battle must have at least been close to that of his brother. I will rate him as the fourth strongest Hokage, but I do believe Godaime may be more powerful than she lets on given the level of ability Jiraiya and Orochimaru have displayed.
Sandaime Hokage is seemingly a more powerful equivalent to Kakashi in the sense that he is a technique specialist. He was able to defeat the resurrected forms of both Shodai and Nidaime while also fighting Orochimaru; this is made more of a feat given his age. The fact that he also survived the ninja wars unlike Nidaime and remained Hokage longer than any other to date demonstrates he was of a high calibre even in terms of Hokage. I place him rightfully as the third most powerful Hokage.
Yondaime Hokage is considered the greatest of all the Hokage and one of the strongest shinobi in history. His Rasengan was an immensely powerful technique considering the relatively small amount of chakra it appears to use; it is made scarier by its ability to be combined with elemental techniques. This gives it limitless potential through the not only the varying elements but also the way in which they can be used. The Flying Thunder God Technique was probably his most deadly weapon, the abilty to create a summoning point anywhere he wished by touching it itself is dangerous enough but if you take into acount the distance he travelled to rescue Kakashi and Rin while he was a Jounin, you can see that its potential for assasinations and qucik escapes. Also during the Kakashi Gaiden he does not seem tired after using the technique several times to defeat around fifty ninja at the battle in the grass village, using it again over a long distance and then defeating another group of hidden rock village ninja. This either demonstrates an immense supply of chakra, which would have been necessasry to summon Gambunta anyway, or the ability to store chakra within tags on kunai etc. to make the technique more efficient. Yondaime was clealry a master of sealing and summoning techniques so it is plausable that he used stored chakra for his creatures summons aswell however this would make him weaker than previously portrayed.
Finaly there is Godaime who I am as of yet unsure of. She has displayed great strength and chakra control and the ability to heal herself with chakra in such a manner has only been seen in Naruto thus far. Her slug summoning also demonstrates that she has a large amount of chakra but the summoning itself does not seem particuly powerful. All in all her true limits have yet to be seen so it is to early to truly judge her ability. The only real evidence for her power as a Hokage is her associations, not only is she the grandaughter of Shodai, but also the student of Samdaime along with Orochimaru and Jiraiya. Both of the other Sanin have demonstrated power well beyond that of Sandaime so it is safe to assume Godaime is either close to or above the level Sarutobi. This makes her position uncertain, on one hand she may be the weakest Hokage to date but on the other she may be the 3rd stongest. The fact that Jiraiya was considered before her for Hokage by both Sandaime and the Daiymo does indicate he was the most powerful of the two, although this may have been more of a matter of convenience.

The Shodai Hokage was more than likely the son or student of the Senju clan’s previous leader before the formation of the village. The Nidaime Hokage was then his brother who would have probably shared the same teacher as Shodai. The Sandaime Hokage was a student of Nidaime and was clearly well thought of by Shodai also. Sarutobi went on to teach Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru. Although Jiraiya was said to be the first choice for the position of Yondaime Hokage, he refuesed the position which later went to his former student Minato. The Yondaime Hokage only appears to have one surving student, Kakashi, although like Jiraiya he may have trained others. Finaly the Godaime Hokage was Tsunade, student of the Sandaime Hokage and descendent of the Shodai and Nidaime Hokage. Kakashi has became the teacher of Naruto, Sauske and Sakura and as such the three are now part of this line. The three have also each been the student of a Sanin for an extended period, not only that Naruto is the son of Yondaime.
Based on the above evidence of the power it takes to be a Hokage my candidates are as follows.
Kakashi would be the obvious choice at the momment, he is not only highly intelligent but probably Konoha’s most powerful Jounin according to what we have been shown. He is also connected to the Hokage lineage.
Naruto is the most strongly liked to the line of previous Hokage however he clearly lacks the inteligence an self control to take on the role still. In addition to his own powerful techniques the Kyubi places his combat ability at the Kage level.
Sauske is an unlikley choice at this stage but who knows were the story may go. He clearly has the intelligence and the strength to take an role and is also connected to the line of previous Hokage.
Yamato is another unlikely candidate as he thus far has displayed any Kage level combat ability, although he can use Kage level techniques. Being a clone of Shodai and a member of Kakshi’s ANBU squad also gives him a connection to the lineage.
Shikamaru may be my most unlikley candidate as he clearly not powerfuol enough to fight at Kage level however his intelligence does allow him to combat powerful opponents given the right resources. With time his strength may develop through his intelligence much like Sandaime. Also his Jounin teacher was Asuma, the son of Sandaime.
Konahamaru’s father is a possibility if he is another son of Sandaime and still alive for that matter. Asuma did not appear to show the full extent of his abilities against Akatsuki due to the circumstances of the battle so this proves that they are indeed a powerful family. Konahamaru’s progress with the shaddow clone tecnhique has also demonstrated his future potential, also his friendship and rivalry with Naruto could prove to push him to great heights.
These assumptions are entirly circumstancial so please comment on them and make your own suggestions for the future Hokage.
