Warning. Contains some Naruto love.
What I love is when people rag on his character traits for being "generic" like his friendship speeches (which are mostly great like the gaara speeches) but then complain about the shortcomings and flaws within his character like his unshakable faith and his straight forward sense of determination. It's like the fandom wants a mary sue character and doesn't want one all at the same time.
You pegged it perfectly. Depth. That is what separates Naruto from other fictional heroes. It's not about chasing the girl, or saving the world (well yes it kind of is... but not always). It's about a kid who has absolutely no place in this world. A kid who has thus far had plenty of opportunities to give up...What I find sensational about Naruto Uzumaki the character is that, thus far, I have no idea why he hasn't thrown in the towel. I'd be one and done by the chuunin exams. "Peace out btiches. FlowLike has had enough". Even within the rules of fiction it baffles me that this kid can keep going. How he kept himself on the right side of morality when he has had every excuse in the book not to.
Another thing people tend to miss is that Naruto's personality lends itself to other characters gaining depth. The way he interacts with others opens avenues and doors for them to develop and grow as well. He's a share-the-wealth type of character and it's incredible how many individuals in this series like Hinata, Gaara, Sasuke, Jiraiya, now Obito have changed and opened themselves because of his influence and will continue to do so until the manga is finished.
It isn't rare for other characters to develop themselves because of the main character's influence, but thus far in my shonen reading career only Naruto finds a way to do it mutually. He gives and takes and it's just beautiful. Chapters like the one where Itachi talks to Naruto about not forgetting his friends and the Hinata speech in 615 only cemented that fact.
Kishimoto made it very clear that his hero wasn't perfect. That he made mistakes and he was not the typical badass (as we've seen with him in humiliating moments like the hyperventaliting scene).
Oh god! You mean he's not perfect?! Oh deary me that can't be right. No way we can have a hero that isn't perfect in every way. Impossible! Unthinkable!
He doesn't just make the story better, he makes the individual characters that people love so much better. He's without a doubt the pulse to his own story, and the haters will have nowhere to hide when my boy finishes this war in grand fashion.
