I thought with how often Yonko Commanders and Admirals come up, especially in power level discussions that it might make sense to have a special thread for it. If I'm wrong: feel free to move it, but I am going to put more effort into it than the average post there and would appreciate if possible that it not get lost in the Zoro/Sanji/YC1,2,3,4 noise there.

I have made it well known that I hate the YC[1,2,3, .. N] ranking system, as it's rooted in non-sense, fan-fiction, and often used as method of trying to prove their favorite character is more powerful than someone else's favorite character. The system is flawed in a few key ways:
  • It is rarely backed by evidence of any kind
  • There is no consistency or agreement in the rankings. One user will claim X is YC1, and another will claim X is YC3
  • It is completely fan-made, and tends to ignore rock-paper-scissor situations that One Piece often has using comparisons that don't make a ton of sense
  • It tries to apply a linear power-scaling system over a world where battles contain a lot of complexity with varying abilities (future-sight, enhanced COC, specialized DF's, etc..)
So I wanted to make a fairly new approach to examining the more popular Yonko Commanders, as well as the Admirals by looking at the following:
  • What makes them special? I'm talking feats and special haki / abilities. For simplicity we'll assume everyone in this post is capable of basic haki
  • What is their devil fruit ability? If any. If relevant, a list of strengths and weaknesses
  • What is their bounty?
  • Notable fights, and their outcomes, relative to the time they happened.
  • A list of potential good match ups (Where the outcome ranges from an equal match, to being able to defeat said match-up easily)
  • A list of potential bad match ups (where the YC / Admiral in question definitely loses)
  • If relevant, a "defeated by" section
  • Any relevant notes regarding how they may face off against other opponents
I also want to focus only on characters we have enough data on. I'll make a few exceptions where they seem OK (Vista, for instance). I'm going to avoid anyone from Shanks' crew, as we just do not have enough data about anyone in the crew to really "rate" them, or provide any useful metrics. Expect more bullet points on characters who've had a lot of screentime.

So here it goes:

----------------------------------------------
Portgas D. Ace
Feats:
  • COC user
  • Was one of the few OP characters who was incredibly strong from a young age - defeating adults as a child
  • Was invited to join the Shichibukai after an incredibly short pirating career
  • Son of the Pirate King, adopted grandson of Garp, brother of Luffy, and Sabo
Ability: Mera Mera no Mi - living embodiment of fire, which can burn from 200C up to 5000C
Bounty: 550,000,000 (higher than Luffy's post-Dressrosa bounty)
Fights:
  • Pre-WBP:
    • Fought Yamato equally in his pre-Whitebeard time
    • Fought Jinbei for five days straight just before being integrated into the Whitebeard Pirates
  • Whitebeard-ish time:
    • Fought Whitebeard 100 times, improving in his abilities with every subsequent battle after the first
  • Pre-timeskip, end of life, WBP Second Commander:
    • Cancelled out Smoker (this was before Haki was well defined. Not sure how it would have really gone with current fighting mechanics)
    • Wiped out a fleet of Baroque Works Billions instantaneously
    • While he was defeated by Blackbeard, he was still a league ahead of Blackbeard's base crew, to the point Blackbeard himself told them to stand back and avoid injury
    • Cancelled out Aokiji's attack
    • Ultimately killed by a blow from Akainu, where he was clearly outmatched
Good matchups:
  • Aokiji - this would be a real determination of who has the most masterful fighting form, as well as mastery over their abiility. Ice and Fire could cancel each other out, but 5000C fire could probably defeat weak ice.
  • Marco - it would be interesting to see how the Phoenix Fire contends with the power of the Mera Mera no Mi. I'm convinced this would be a close one
Bad matchups:
  • Potentially bad: Cracker. I don't think that fire would be incredibly effective against Cracker. With Cracker's COA and ability to continually create more and more biscuit warriors, this could be a tough one for Ace
  • Very bad: Akainu, as we saw. Any wielder of the Magu Magu no Mi is going to rely 100% on the Mera Mera user's physical capabiliities.
Defeated by:
  • Whitebeard
  • Blackbeard
Notes: The Mera Mera no Mi is seen as inferior to Akainu's Magu Magu no Mi. While it's an incredibly powerful Devil Fruit, the user will have to rely more on their own physical abilities combined with Haki to fight the user of the Magu Magu no Mi. It's also ineffective against Smoker's ability, as well as Aokiji's Ice. Also worth noting that while some people have the perception Ace is weak, I find this to be relative to time and over-all story development. Ace was defeated by one of the most powerful characters in the series, and that character preferred recruiting Ace over using Ace towards meeting his short-term goal of becoming a Shichibukai. That Blackbeard, a current Yonko, had this level of respect for Ace, speaks volumes of his strength and potential. Overall Ace was an impressive fighter even without his DF. He was very young at his time of death, and given time could have easily become a yonko-level individual across the board. He was an intelligent fighter who was a bit hot-headed. He was able to work around the Yami Yami no Mi's DF-cancelling by ensuring his attacks fired off before his ability was cancelled out.

Vista

Feats:
  • Strongest swordsman in the Whitebeard Pirates
  • Uses a form of two-sword style fighting
Ability: exceptional swordsmanship. No DF that we know of
Bounty: Unknown
Fights:
  • Fought Hawkeye one-on-one. Was able to block Hawkeye's attacks and launch attacks of his own
  • Fought Akainu with Marco

----------------------------------------------
Marco the Phoenix
Feats:
  • Was able to hold his own against Admirals in Marineford
  • Rescued Luffy multiple times in Marineford
  • Able to repel the entirety of the Big Mom pirates from ascending to Wano / Onigashima
  • Was mentioned by name when the Gorosei were discussing who could defeat Blackbeard (along with Big Mom)
  • Medical knowledge (amplified by his DF)
Ability (Tori Tori No Mi - Model):
  • Phoenix Grants him the regenerative abilities of a Phoenix, as well as ability to heal others.
  • Its flames slow the spread of the Ice-Oni virus created by Queen, and are one of the few things that's been shown to harm Big Mom's Homie, Napoleon
  • Flight
  • Unique hybrid form which includes the Phoenix's talons, as well as flight, and flames
Bounty: 1.374B
Fights:
  • Pre-timeskip:
    • Fought with Kizaru (later cuffed with seastone due to being distracted)
    • Fought with Aokiji
    • Fought against Akainu with Vista (landing blows, and blocking Akainu's punch)
  • During Timeskip:
    • Fought, and was defeated by the Blackbeard Pirates
  • Post-timeskip:
    • Fought Big Mom, who mentioned she didn't have the souls to spare on fighting Marco given the situation
    • Fought King and Queen in a 2v1 situation. This ultimately wore him down and he would have likely been defeated had it continued on, but the fight was out of his favor, and his purpose was successful: Holding the two off from wiping out the entire Live Floor
Good Matchups (relative to current time):
  • Kizaru - they fought before and were relatively evenly matched
  • Aokiji - would be interesting to see the phoenix flames against the Ice Admiral
  • Big Mom - He was able to harm her homies, and drain her energy, while going toe-to-toe with her. Big Mom wins, but if we analyze the Soru Soru vs. the Phoenix ability, it's actually a wash which pushes the battle into the hands of their users
  • Perospero - Marco feared his arrows and I believe the two are more closely matched than we'd be led to believe.
  • King (1v1) - Two flying DF users who utilize flames. This would be a great fight. I think ultimately Marco wins this if it's uninterrupted, and both fighters are at full strength from start to finish.
  • Katakuri - a strong ability user with strong COO and haki, immense stamina, and durability would be well-suited for a "good fight"
Bad Matchups:
  • Blackbeard - a lot of his real impressive features are built into his ability which would be cancelled out
  • Akainu - I think the attack power of Akainu's magma, paired with the fact that Akainu is objectively a Yonko-level fighter, would put this fight in the hands of Akainu. While I don't think it would be a quick, easy win for Akainu, I think it would be best for Marco to avoid this fight
Defeated by:
  • (ish) Onigumo and Kizaru (ish because he was distracted)
  • Blackbeard (though we didn't see it, it's implied they probably met on the battlefield. We only know the WB Pirates lost), so file this under maybe.
  • (ish) King and Queen (ish because he's OK, and I don't think their defeat was his goal)
Notes: Has what is objectively one of the best abilities in the entire series. Marco has a lot going for him - flight, healing, medical knowledge, high speed, high attack power, solid defense, and he's a great support on the battlefield. He's never been shown to low-diff any fighters, but he's more than capable all the same. He's been seen repelling Big Mom's crew (just like King), he's matched blows with Big Mom, he's blocked attacks from Akainu (with difficulty), sparred with Kizaru, held his own in 2 on 1 situations where he was dealing with other Yonko Commanders (King and Queen). While he's very strong, he has not shown powerful enough attacks to really push any fights to their finish. His strength appears to be in support, and assisting allies on the battlefield. His ability is over-utilized, and without it he likely falters (hence his loss against Blackbeard). He seems to know his limitations well, and has a lot of experience which puts him in an awkward place where he probably is able to hold off the majority of other Yonko commanders, without actually defeating them. Overall a well-balanced fighter who was recognized as near-yonko-level by the Gorosei, and perceived as a serious threat on Onigashima, as well as a moderate one by Big Mom herself.

----------------------------------------------
Charlotte Katakuri
Feats:
  • First fighter witnessed using advanced COO, which allowed him to see into the future
  • COA that exceeded Luffy's, utilized in his block mochi punches
  • Awakened Devil Fruit
  • Undefeated his entire life prior to meeting Luffy
  • Referred to as the Invincible Superman by the Charlotte Family. Known for his reliability and calm demeanor.
  • Most similar fighting style to Luffy's that we have seen in the series
  • Can launch jelly-beans like bullets, assassinating mid-tier fighters and lower from afar
  • Has more insight than Big Mom, a Yonko, as he was the only one to figure out what was going on at the Wedding before it was too late
  • Extremely intelligent. The only Charlotte who thought to wait for the Straw Hat Pirates on their own ship
  • Expertly wields the spear, Mole
  • Bound-man Luffy was no match for him
Ability (Mochi Mochi no Mi):
  • Strengths:
    • First "special paramecia" we see - the Mochi Mochi no Mi
    • Combined with his advanced COO his ability makes him nigh-invincible
    • The ability's stickiness allows him to trap even strong fighters such as Luffy, and beat them into submission
    • Able to replicate Luffy's fighting style
    • With Awakening he can utilize his ability similar to Doflamingo's awakening, turning the environment into Mochi and heavily leaning any battles into his favor
    • Uses an altered, advanced form of COA that was shown to be superior to Luffy's at the time
    • COC user
  • Weaknesses:
    • Weak against tea / hot liquids. Fighters like Jinbei could potentially use this to their advantage
Bounty: 1.057B Beli
Fights (all during WCI arc):
  • Fought Ichiji (defeated with ease)
  • Fought Luffy for nearly 12 hours
Good match ups (relative to the point in time he was in the series, WCI):
  • Any physical fighter barring an actual Yonko. Katakuri was shown to be incredibly competent and well balanced.
  • Cracker - Advanced COO and impermeability would obliterate Cracker
  • King - I have a feeling this would be a great fight. King doesn't appear to have advanced COO, but it would be interesting to see how the Lunarian's flames, and pteranodon abilities would fare against Katakuri's COO, and Mochi. Both fighters are both durable, and powerful, and wield COC
  • Kizaru - I imagine Katakuri is one of the few fighters who could keep up with the Light Admiral. Given we haven't seen much overlap in their fights and abilities, we could likely assume that Katakuri would lose this one, but not without a long fight
Bad match ups (relative to the point in time he was in the series, WCI):
  • Any Yonko -
    • Kaido - too strong and durable. Easy win for Kaido
    • Blackbeard - Katakuri utilizes his fruit a bit too much, and Blackbeard would probably take a few hits, but win this one fairly easily
  • Akainu - Magma wins again, IMO. Too fucking hot for Katakuri. The man who blew off half of Whitebeard's face could probably win this one
  • Fujitora - I imagine his increased perception / blindness has more to it than meets the eye (sorry, bad joke). He is probably a strong counter to advanced COO, and his ability to manipulate gravity could potentially counter this as well

Defeated by: Monkey D Luffy
Notes: There is some debate about the credibility of his defeat by Luffy. I'm looking at this objectively; he was defeated by Luffy. I don't believe he let Luffy win, and I think the fight was one of the most critical points of growth in the entire series for Luffy. Katakuri's subsequent respect for Luffy wasn't the respect one would show their child after letting their child defeat them in chess. It was the respect for one who earned their respect through perseverance and growth. Luffy's retreats were strategy and Katakuri's oversights were faults. In many cases, overconfidence is a weakness as we witnessed with Katakuri who could have ensured Luffy's death at various moments but did not due to overestimating his own abilities while underestimating Luffy's.

----------------------------------------------
Charlotte Cracker
Feats:
  • Proficient enough in his ability that even the WG doesn't know what he actually looks like, as the wanted poster is of his "Biscuit Warrior"
  • Defeated Urouge (albeit after Urouge defeated Snack)
  • First opponent to "push" Gear 4 Luffy
  • Skilled Swordsman
Ability (Bisu Bisu no Mi):
  • Advantages:
    • Strange paramecia that allows its user to conjure biscuits
    • Biscuits are durable enough that they were too tough for base-Luffy (post-timeskip) to destroy
    • Biscuits can be "worn" as armor, and all wield swords and shields
    • When wielded by a true master-user, you can even simulate a "dying warrior" with concocted jelly-blood
  • Disadvantages:
    • Biscuits are weak to water, which may create a rock-paper scissors effect with various enemies (for instance, Jinbei can "throw" water)
    • Being able to fight with these soldiers gives him too much confidence, and has turned him into a glass cannon who can't take hits from strong fighters
    • Ability does drain his stamina
Bounty: 860M Beli
Fights:
  • (During time-skip): Urouge
  • (During WCI arc): Monkey D Luffy and Nami
Good Matchups (relative to the point in time he was in the series, WCI):
  • Luffy
  • Vergo - his reliance on brute force attacks would have made this a tough fight
  • Doflamingo - another physical user who would have trouble dealing with the biscuit warriors
  • Kidd (I think the reliance on blunt force would make this a difficult fight for Kidd)
  • Ulti - Another brute. Going to need really strong COA to put a crack into Cracker
Bad Matchups (relative to the point in time he was in the series, WCI):
  • Jinbei - the ability to "fling" water would be detrimental to his reliance on Biscuit Warriors
  • Law - manipulating the environment could potentially allow Law to remove Cracker from his "shield" of the warriors, and quickly end the fight
  • Akainu - Hot liquid. I think the Magu Magu would obliterate Cracker
  • Kizaru - Too fast, and the beams, if able to overcome his shields, would destroy him
Defeated by: Combination of Monkey D Luffy with Nami's help from the Clima Tact
Notes: Cracker is a contention point among many members, specifically many who don't feel Luffy defeated him "fairly." Cracker also happens to be a fighter who fits the "rock-paper-scissors" paradigm very well. Some (brute force) fighters will struggle greatly against such an overwhelming ability. Others who can utilize water (Jinbei), or manipulate the environment (Law) are fighters who I believe would do well against Cracker, despite not being objectively stronger than Luffy at the time he fought with this man. Cracker's durability was far behind Luffy's. He carried a great amount of stamina, and his overconfidence also contributed to his defeat. He is a strong example of why the YC1,2,3,N is not exactly a good metric for measuring Yonko Commanders. Overall Cracker would do well against brutish fighters such as Burgess, Jack, and Luffy. Any fighter who can change the environment to their advantage either by producing water or otherwise immobilizing his Biscuit Warriors will still have to content with a strong swordsman. Luckily, they just need to get one blow to win the battle. One of the most broken, weirdest abilities in the series given to one of the least durable, highest stamina fighters; This guy was a point of debate for so long for good reason.

----------------------------------------------
Jack the Drought
Feats:
  • Insane durability and stamina. Was able to battle the Mink Kings for five days without stopping or sleeping while they rested on intervals.
  • Near insane level of confidence. He was willing to take on an Admiral-led fleet to free Doflamingo
  • Practical to the point that he's incredibly dangerous. Nearly committed genocide on the Minks over a single Ninja
  • Was able to fight multiple Sulong'd Mink Warriors head on while atop the Dome
  • Being a fishman, he can breath under water but can't swim due to his consumption of a DF
  • Has taken a hit:
    • Zunisha smashed him
    • Sunken by Marine Fleet
    • Took a beating from the Mink Kings
    • Took a slash across the chest from Ashura
    • Took many blows from Sulong'd Minks
Ability (Zou Zou no Mi: Model Mammoth):
  • Advantages:
    • Being an ancient Zoan, he gets an insane amount of durability from this fruit
    • Incredible strength bonus, as mammoths (and elephants in general) were/are very strong
    • Gains powerful tusks which double up as twin blades
    • Able to use hybrid-form to combine advantages of being a human, and being a mammoth
  • Disadvantages:
    • Specific to Jack - he's a fishman, and Fishmen are incredibly powerful when fighting underwater. Being a Devil Fruit Consumer takes this away from him and makes him helpless in situations which he's underwater. On the plus side he's a very rare Devil Fruit user who doesn't have to worry about suffocating if he falls into the ocean
Bounty: 1B Beli
Fights:
  • (pre-Dressrosa) Nekomamushi and Inurashi, separately, on a 12-hour interval. Two incredibly strong opponents who were able to push him to his limits
  • (Post-Dressrosa, pre-Zou) Doflamingo's Marine Escort - not shown, but ended in what we can only assume was Jack's defeat based on how it was reported, and the fact that Jack did not retrieve Doflamingo
  • (Post-Zou, pre-WCI) Zunesha - Smashed to bits by the giant elephant
  • (pre-Onigashima Wano) Ashura - took a slice to the chest but the battle ended prematurely as Kaido showed up
  • (Onigashima) Mink tribe - performed very well in this fight
  • (Onigashima) Neko and Inu, both Sulong'd - defeated and forced to recover
  • (Onigashima) Inurashi, Sulong'd and base form - defeated with finality
Good Match Ups:
  • Sanji would have likely been a good fight
  • Vergo would have been a good fight due to both being strong physical fighters
  • In a match of raw power I think he'd do well against Queen, but would fail at avoiding plagued bullets
  • Any match where raw power comes into play including: Drake, Yamato, Zoro, Jinbei
  • Cracker - I think that this would be a solid show of stamina. If Jack ever lands a blow, he wins, but can he deal with the force of Biscuit Warriors long enough that Cracker runs out of energy? He's also a fishman. There's potential he knows how to "fling water", but as we have no evidence of that we must assume he can't.
  • Burgess - two brutish warriors going at it. I think this would actually be a good fight
Bad Match Ups:
  • Katakuri - Advanced COO with insanely strong COA would brutalize Jack. Katakuri wins this one with ease, IMO.
  • Marco - The durability and stamina with the regenerative powers of the Phoenix, high speed, claws, and ability to fly would make this a nigh-impossible match for Jack
  • Sabo - I believe Sabo's insane attack power combined with his new ability (mera mera no mi) would make this a near impossible fight for Jack
  • Kizaru - way too fast for Jack
  • Akainu - too much attack power. Jack is durable but not durable enough to withstand magma
Defeated by (LOL): Marine Escort, Zunesha, Inu and Neko / Sulong'd Minks, Inurashi (Sulong'd)
Notes: While he's been defeated a lot, it's more a testament to how ballsy he is than anything else. He has no fear of anything that we've seen. He also tends to recover quickly and come back for vengeance. Also worth noting he's only 28, and has accomplished a lot for that age. His love of destruction, strength, and durability have allowed him to confidently fight a wide array of enemies. Most of his defeats could be classified as inconveniences, with his most recent one being fairly final. Overall Jack does well in shows of strength and durability. Any enemy who has a tricky ability such as Law or Hawkins would likely due well against Jack. High speed fighters who also have high attack power and stamina would do well, also. He's not above using cheap tricks to win, and has some at his disposal.

----------------------------------------------
Queen the Plague
Feats:
  • Worked along-side Vegapunk, Judge and Caesar Clown where he apparently learned from each one of them (The 'Jack of all Trades, Master of None Scientist' of MADS)
  • Decent strategizer - was able to incapacitate Big Mom, then successfully transport her to Onigashima
  • Has concocted biological weapons that can wreak havoc and devastation on populations
  • Modified body capable of everything from lasers, detachable claws, launching rockets, to launching his own mid-section and more
  • Able to replicate the Germa Science to an extent showing off each male child's abilities (including Sanji's own invisibility)
Ability (Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Brachiosaurus):
  • Advantages:
    • As this in an ancient Zoan, Queen has enhanced durability and stamina
    • Combines well with his science and body-modifications to give him a versatile fighting style
  • Disadvantages:
    • Nothing major, but in terms of dinosaurs, the Brachiosaurus is unimpressive and among the Ancient Zoans Queen has been unimpressive in this way, being herbivorous, but lacking the attack power of Sasaki or Jack (since Jack has tusks, at least).
Bounty: 1.32B Beli
Fights:
  • Big Mom (O'Lin) - Queen had to strategize as he was clearly outmatched. He did succeed. If Big Mom had been herself it'd of been an easy win for her.
  • Marco (with King) - I got the feeling that Marco was a superior fighter in this match up. One on one this goes to Marco, easily. Queen was more of an annoyance than anything, and Marco was even able to allow Chopper to slap the shit out of Queen
  • Sanji - this fight dragged through a lot of chapters and panels and had its ups and downs. Queen's focus on outdoing Judge and overconfidence in himself allowed him to be defeated
Good Match Ups (Current time):
  • Jack would be a good match up. We don't have much to go off of when comparing the two. Queen tends to rely on technology and body modifications quite a bit. I have a feeling in a brawl, that Jack would do quite well. If there are no rules (a normal pirate battle) then Queen would likely win due to Jack being unable to avoid things such as plague bullets, lasers, etc.
  • Jinbei would also be a good match up. They are both bulky fighters. Jinbei is incredibly fast for his size and could potentially counter the plague-bullets.
  • Cracker - hard to envision who would win here. On one hand Queen is incredibly durable, and his invisibility could be advantageous in this fight. On the other hand Cracker's biscuits may be too tough for Queen to crack, and the fight could drag on longer than Queen could handle, or just drag on forever due to neither having enough attack power to finish it.
  • Drake - I think this would be close. A fellow supernova, captain, and a member of SWORD with an Ancient Zoan (carnivorous) ability should be a good match up for Queen one on one
Bad Match Ups (Current time):
  • Zoro - I don't think Queen could handle Zoro's swordsmanship. In current time Zoro was able to wound Kaido with Enma, and Queen is much less durable than Kaido. I also think Zoro's show of being able to "dodge" plagued bullets would indicate most of Queen's tech is useless. With the ability to slice off appendages and wound the dino, this goes to Zoro easily, IMO.
  • Katakuri - I think Katakuri wins hands down. Advanced COO, and his special paramecia with its stickiness would be hard for someone like Queen to content with. Not to mention awakening
  • King - the Lunarian wins. His defense, manipulation of fire, ability to fly and all put him above Queen
  • Marco - the Phoenix is likely immune to viruses (not proven, but seems logical). He's quick, able to fly, and did well enough in a two on one situation where Queen was involved. I think this goes to Marco. Not quickly, but possibly easily.
Defeated by:
  • "O'Lin"/Big Mom (but got back up quick enough)
  • Sanji - final, and brutal pounding / KO
Notes: Queen is dangerous in that he's a mad scientist and if left alone can wreak havoc on the battle field. His level of overall threat is not reflective of his overall strength for this reason. From a fighter perspective he is average in the level he competes (yonko commanders). There's not a lot special about him that would work well against other Yonko Commanders. His stronger attacks require too much set up, and an ability to get a vantage point over his opponent making it incredibly situational (I'm talking the brachio bomb attacked he used against O'Lin). Overall I think he is best left on the sidelines / in the background wreaking havoc in his own way, and will struggle to be very useful in fights against other Yonko Commanders. I can't see him holding his own against any admiral very well, and while he was certainly strong, and a worthy benchmark for Sanji's progression, he was also comic relief, and it's hard to use a character that is simultaneously comic relief, and a super badass on the evil side.

----------------------------------------------
King the Conflagration
Feats:
  • Lunarian, which ruled the world like Gods in a previous era. This grants him unique abilities such as manipulation of fire, and increased defense
  • COC User
  • Versatile fighter - Uses a sword effectively, but uses his racial ability, devil fruit ability, arms and legs just as effectively. He's a killing machine.
  • Repelled the Big Mom Pirates (like Marco)
  • Last of his race - survived experimentation - presumabely by Queen, Vegapunk, Judge and Caesar
  • Kaido's first mate, and was acknowledged by the brutish Yonko for his strength
  • Very confident in his abilities. Saw no threat in the Tobiroppo being able to challenge him, and was initially very difficult for Zoro to deal with
  • Fast, agile, durable
  • He's never been turned down by a member of the opposite sex
Ability
  • (Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon):
    • Advantages:
      • Durability
      • Flight
      • Unique attacks that mimic how Pteranodons fight
    • Disadvantages:
      • Nothing I can think of related to his Devil Fruit
  • Lunarian:
    • Advantages:
      • Fire manipulation *shown to be near on par with the Mera Mera no Mi
      • Increased durability (when manipulating fire)
      • Increased speed (when not manipulating fire)
Bounty: 1.39B Beli
Fights:
  • Sanji (brief, but in King's favor)
  • Marco (2v1 with Queen's help. Did not resolve. Likely would have ended in Marco's defeat had it gone on)
  • Zoro - defeated by Zoro. Very brutal fight
Good Match Ups (Current time):
  • Marco - this was never in Marco's favor due to the 2v1 nature. I can't honestly say who'd win here. I suspect Marco would lack the overall attack power to "end" King, but that he could probably go on indefinitely if not having to also battle Queen. Two flying ability users with their own fires, the first mates of Yonko
  • Sanji (post-Onigashima) - Sanji's ability to be exposed to flames, enhanced Germa body giving him increased defense and regeneration, and powerful kicks would make this a good fight if it happened post-Onigashima. Sanji is also able to propel himself through the air, which would make the fight more convenient than it was for Zoro
  • Katakuri - Hard to say who'd win with the lack of overlap in opponents for the two. Both are "first mates" in their own way
  • I think when all things are considered, this is a "top tier Yonko Commander". That said, most non-Yonko would be a decent match up for him, and few enemies would low-diff him.
Bad Match Ups (Current time):
  • Blackbeard - Yami Yami no Mi's gravity would make flying all but useless. The Lunarian flames would give him a better chance than most once caught, though.
  • Akainu - I think the Fleet Admiral would outmatch King. He's shown to be able to avoid damage in ways similar to Katakuri, by predicting where he'd be hit. King's fire abilities may make him more durable against a fighter like Akainu, but Akainu is powerful beyond his DF.
  • Potentially Law - the Ope Ope no Mi could make the fight difficult for King as Law manipulates the environment. A single awakened attack by Law could spell the end for King
Defeated by: Roronoa Zoro
Notes: King almost appears like a double-DF user, being able to dip into his fire manipulation, and pteranodon abilities. Without a ton of data it's hard to compare him directly to existing Yonko Commanders other than to say that he's held his own against Marco, who held his own against Kizaru, who is an Admiral. King places too much confidence in his Lunarian heritage and didn't perceive defeat as a possibility when facing Zoro. He's a well balanced fighter who can do well in most situations. I'd like to believe he could "survive" or escape a Yonko in most situations, and defeat or hold off most fellow Yonko Commanders indefinitely. He low-diffs his fellow Calamities, IMO. His fire manipulation has created attacks that Zoro described to be "like magma." They've also been shown to have long-range capabilities similar to Ace's Hiken. Overall I think King is one of the most well-balanced Yonko Commanders that we've seen in the series. He's the first non-Yonko to really push Zoro to his limits post time-skip, and he's the last known Lunarian. He hails from a race that ruled the world like Gods, and he seems to have mastery over his racial abilities and his Devil Fruit. He can adapt to fighting opponents of different styles whether it be a swordsman, brawler, shinobi, or whatever. His final attack creating a literal fire dragon granted him a much more epic end than his peers.

I'd like to add more when I have more time, as well as an analysis of the admirals that's a bit more objective. In summary I will say:
If we want to rank or create rankings of Yonko Commanders, we need to do so cyclically. There are definitely situations where:

YC A defeats YC B
YC B defeats YC C
YC C defeats YC A.

For instance, let's assume Luffy fought Cracker WITHOUT Nami. Luffy would have lost.

Cracker defeats Luffy
Luffy defeats Katakuri
Katakuri defeats Cracker

It's really hard to fit them to any solid ranking system based on the fact that we typically see them in snapshots of time throughout the series - for instance, Vista fought Hawkeye two years ago. Katakuri was defeated by Luffy weeks ago. Cracker was defeated the day before Katakuri.
Is the Katakuri of two weeks ago weaker than the King of today? We can't really say. We have to analyze what they've done, their quirks / abilities, and with the lack of overlap between the two they're really hard to compare. What we do know is they exist in a level where they aren't likely to be low-diffed by Yonko, but objectively cannot defeat a Yonko.
Is Cracker a "top tier Commander"? He fought Luffy, and nearly defeated him, mere hours before Luffy took on Katakuri. I would argue Katakuri is objectively stronger than Cracker, but that the match-up system is at play here. Katakuri is more well-rounded, so he defeats both.
Has Marco defeated anyone notable? Does the answer to that question make him weak? Does the fact that we've never seen him defeated objectively make him strong? Who knows.
Ace has been called weak on these forums despite fighting with Blackbeard, a now-Yonko and someone even Shanks struggled with. Was Ace ever worthy of being called weak?

TLDR: This isn't DBZ. While "rankings" work for some fighters, they utterly fail with others. At the end of the day Oda makes characters as strong as they need to be in the moment. For example, is Shiryu stronger than King? We don't really know. What we do know is that Shiryu will likely fight Zoro, and Zoro has defeated King. Yonko Commanders have little overlap in their matchups, and apparent vast differences in strength (ranging from "you're really a yonko commander?!" to "spars with WSS" and beyond). Look at comparisons objectively. Cracker isn't a "YC2" - whatever the fuck that means - when you want to compare him to Zoro or something. He's a fighter with a strong ability who pushed gear four Luffy at a time before Luffy had advanced COO / Ryuo and COC. He was as strong as he needed to be at the moment he fought Luffy.

Idk man snakeman could of fared different against cracker in the early on fight. Had he used snakeman early on before cracker created way more biscuit soilders i think he's fast enough to KO him

I don't see how the YC1-2-3 or just trios in general can be fiction or fan made. We have:

-3 Admirals.
-The 3 Calamities. Their actual names imply a hierarchy among them.
- The sweet commanders. While there is no implied order among the sweet commanders it's very clear from context and bounties that the hierarchy was Katakuri -> smoothie -> cracker (which to be fair could change over time and there are other members who were said to be comparable).
- Marco, jozu and vista clearly held special relevance during the great war. Though it is worth noting that other commanders could potentially be as strong as them given the time they spent with WB and seniority.
- The monster trio is something that has been mentioned in the manga at least a few times.
- Within shank's crew beckham, yassop and lucky have been singled out when speaking of the crew's strength. Not definitive but it's hard to think that this isn't relevant going forward.

There's no real disagreement regarding who are the YC1-2-3.. At the most we haven't been told who they are at a specific time.

The only fan fiction nonsense that's not backed up by evidence is that the trios in groups are not a thing, regardless of whether it is implied by context or literal ranks that are held within crews.

regarding ace:
If we go by the episode ace bit we can see that he grew a lot stronger within a short time frame. By the time he tied with jinbe he was unable to scratch WB... and eventually got to the point where he could scratch WB... And even fore WB to try a bit. Feat wise this puts ace quite high in the pecking order. He probably would have defeated jinbe with a reasonable margin at this point... Unfortunately there isn't more information to compare ace to other WB commanders.

I am also not sure of how good or bad the aokiji vs fire/magma matchup is. Ace did cancel aokiji's attack but that was a mere one attack. Not too long after that aokiji fought akainu for 10 days. To me it's a hard sell that aokiji could have been at a disadvantage against akainu for 10 consecutive days of non stop combat 24/7. Also, while there is a hierarchy between fire and magma, they aren't the same thing. Fire and magma could have different functionality when confronted with ice.

Regarding marco:
I am a bit of the idea that we shouldn't necessarily think of his blue flames as flames... In a comparable context to other more conventional flames like ace's, sanji's diable jambe or even king's flames. King's flame has special properties but it at least burns stuff. Marco's in turn are not even hot. He can use his flames offensively but it's unclear what effect this has on the target other than it hitting hard. Prometheus mentioned how marco's flames hurt but we have no context regarding why this is. Maybe it was simply because the flames were cold or drowned out prometheus. With king we learned that his flames serve defensive purposes when ignited on his back and offensive properties when applied to his sword (and I assumed projected elsewhere)... however marco's flames seemed problematic even when fire was on king's back. But I have no idea of what that means. Marco ultimately seems stronger than king to me but I doubt he would have won against both king and queen.

Cracker:

why is vergo even on that list? Cracker was able to engage gear 4 luffy in CQC in spite of his low hp bar. Vergo was an officer in doflamingo's crew. Doflamingo probably doesn't or barely cuts it to be a calamity.. Vergo is so far off cracker's weight class it's not even funny.

It's true that vergo's cracker ability can potentially be hard countered. Water is a confirmed weakness though I wouldn't rule out fire users being able to burn the biscuits to a crisp. That said, I wouldn't rule out cracker against jinbe. Cracker is still someone who could keep up with luffy's gear 4 speed and it took a pretty strong hit to take him down. In general though I do believe the fanbase tends to misrepresent cracker as a one trick pony when in reality he is fairly versatile.

jack:

Jack is a fighter i feel mostly cheated with. One of the world's top pirates and most of his combat was off screened. We barely got a decent look at his hybrid form and up to now we are mostly unfamiliar with his fighting style.

Again with vergo... Jack is way above vergo's weight class. We saw vergo barely overpower an injured sanji in punk hazard... Meanwhile in dressrosa sanji got nearly foderized by doflamingo while being in his best condition. I honestly doubt vergo would last against any of the more relevant executives in the older yonko crews. Maybe vergo would make for an ok headliner at the most while falling short of the tobiropo or the supernova...

Queen:

Queen seems like a pretty versatile fighter in general. He feels slightly underwhelming but I kinda blame oda on this one for not making more of a show with him. We also didn't see queen use poison pink. Queen is an incredibly versatile fighter with his dinosaur fruit, cyborg body and germa tricks. He never evidenced advanced forms of haki but perhaps his absurd constitution and weaponry were enough to make him competitive as one of kaido's top officers. I am not particularly sold that queen, who is a dinosaur, a cyborg and has a ton of enhancements would be particularly at a disadvantage against swordsmen. This series treats most martial arts as being competitive rather than them having advantages over one another. Queen is like a quadruple DF user... given his massive cyborg arsenal.

As an scientist it seems like he replicated everything he saw but he didn't exactly make advancements of his own.

King:

To me it's a hard sell that the very unremarkable tobiropo would be a threat to king... or queen or jack for that matter. The lot of them feel incredibly underwhelming. Even jinbe, whom I would argue got cemented as clearly behind zoro and sanji within the strawhats during this arc, mid diffed arguably the most dangerous looking tobiropo.

I am not sure if the implication here is that king's flame is comparable to the mera mera no mi. It does more than mere fire and at some point it was even compared to magma. And to add to what you mention regarding king's flame:

  • Lunarian:
    • Advantages:
      • Fire manipulation *shown to be near on par with the Mera Mera no Mi
      • Increased durability (when manipulating fire)
      • Increased speed (when not manipulating fire) --->Also get to use flame as a weapon.

A bit nickpicky but I think this is the core of king's ability works. Clad himself in fire for absurd endurance or "project" his flame for a speed boost along with the advantages of weaponizing his flame in a manner similar to ace. I don't think king could have kept his flame on his back while also throwing it at people. At least I don't think we saw that.

I don't think a lot of that is very clear at all. The YC1-2-3 stuff is literally fan made, and the concept revolves around a fiction. Are you under the impression that Oda or his team released these terms? Because he did not. Oda's fans are the ones who obsess about power level. He's never said much that I can see to indicate he cares much about "ranking" his characters in terms of strength, and on the contrary has said story is always going to come before power scaling. This is why opponents are as strong as they need to be at a given time. Luffy threw punches at Fujitora in the end of Dressrosa, and Fujitora was in a three-way match with Law and Doflamingo. Is Fujitora on Law / Doflamingo / Luffy's "Dressrosa level"? I'd argue not. However, if he'd simply owned everyone then the plot wouldn't progress.

With Smoothie I'm not sure other than bounty how there's a clear hierarchy. She hasn't had any interaction with Cracker, and the most we've seen out of her has been being outmaneuvered by Brook, "juicing" a giraffe, and pursuing the Straw Hats in a very lop-sided navel battle. I'm not saying she's weak, but it's anything but clear that she's "stronger than Cracker." If all we're going by is bounty, then you should know Sabo's bounty is less than Perospero, but I'd argue it's questionable at best to say that Perospero would defeat Sabo.

Jozu got stopped by Doflamingo's strings, and his arm was broken off by Aokiji.

Most of the items above are pretty disjointed, for instance:
Jack is possibly the best litmus test of "strength" as he's fought a fairly wide array of people, still, not much overlap with other commanders
Smoothie hasn't had any notable battles or done much in general. She has a high bounty, but for reference, Usopp's bounty is higher than both pre-Shichibukai Crocodile and Hancock, and close to Jinbei's pre-shichibukai bounty (and Moriah's pre-shichibukai bounty was higher than Doflamingo)
Perospero was ultimately defeated by (sulong'd) Neko, and made short work of Pedro who fought with Tamago
Katakuri only really fought Luffy
Cracker defeated Urouge and fought Luffy
Jozu was stopped by Doflamingo's strings, which Luffy broke out of. His arm was also shattered by Aokiji, who Doflamingo was able to "shake out" of his ice
Regarding Whitebeard in general - Oda specifically mentioned that every fleet had equal standing, and was intentionally vague about power-scaling. The only one who's been held in any form of reverence has been Marco (who the Gorosei acknowledge as strong / near yonko level)
Shanks - not enough data to really be useful in any kind of way. Oda also mentioned Shanks has fleets similar to Kaido and Big Mom, so his crew is structured more similar to Luffy's fleet than other Yonko (where he has his own "monster trio").

Main point though is that there isn't enough overlap to form a meaningful ranking system. It's not like Cracker kicked Jack's ass before fighting Luffy, then Jack went and low-diff'd Doflamingo. It's more like every fight has been fairly isolated, and the best metric for which to measure them is based on their point in the story.

There's no real disagreement regarding who are the YC1-2-3.. At the most we haven't been told who they are at a specific time.

Magma and fire share a single similarity - they are both hot. I believe Akainu is at a disadvantage against Aokiji, if anything. What happens when you 'cool' magma? It becomes rock. Rock doesn't move, and isn't very permeable when formed.

Fire is plasma, and what happens when you throw ice on fire depends on the ice, and depends on the fire. Throwing a cube of ice into a bon-fire melts the cube, and throwing a brick of ice onto a lit match will put out the flame. We haven't really seen how Ace reacts to being hit with water that I can recall, or how Akainu deals with heat. I think it's hard to make any assumptions about these match ups other than the one that was clear: Magu Magu no Mi dominated the Mera Mera no Mi.

Regarding marco:
I am a bit of the idea that we shouldn't necessarily think of his blue flames as flames... In a comparable context to other more conventional flames like ace's, sanji's diable jambe or even king's flames. King's flame has special properties but it at least burns stuff. More or less how I felt about this.

In general though I do believe the fanbase tends to misrepresent cracker as a one trick pony when in reality he is fairly versatile.
I mentioned in my original post that "good match ups" are good in that they favor the YC I was talking about, and included "low diff" fights up to "high diff" as a "good match up". From this perspective, I put Vergo as he's a brute-force haki user who would struggle against Cracker.

Vergo is one of the very few people we have seen in the New World as an enemy who doesn't have an ability, and relies on physical strength and haki all the way, so he was a good example of someone Cracker would do well against, seeing as how he has no trickery.

I honestly doubt vergo would last against any of the more relevant executives in the older yonko crews. Maybe vergo would make for an ok headliner at the most while falling short of the tobiropo or the supernova...
See above. Vergo actually has very few data points that are overlapping with Jack, though. He's a good litmus test for brutish fighters, too, as that's all he is. Vergo low-diffed Smoker, was low-diffed by Law, and hasn't been seen doing much else other than breaking Sanji's leg. I think Vergo is objectively above a headliner; I mean, Robin and Franky defeated Tobiroppo members. Is the implication that Robin or Franky could defeat someone who low-diff'd Smoker, and fractured Sanji's leg in a kicking match?

This series treats most martial arts as being competitive rather than them having advantages over one another. Queen is like a quadruple DF user... given his massive cyborg arsenal.

As an scientist it seems like he replicated everything he saw but he didn't exactly make advancements of his own.
Didn't really mention swordsmen in general, but Zoro alone. I think a quick fighter (and after seeing Zoro successfully hit King when King was in "high speed mode" I think it's safe to say Queen wouldn't be avoiding shit that Zoro throws at him) with high attack power would be Queen's ultimate weakness, actually. I can't really see Queen taking Asura on.

Also, I think most of the science stuff unique to Queen were his fucked up viruses.

I don't think king could have kept his flame on his back while also throwing it at people. At least I don't think we saw that.
The comparison to magma is something I wish Oda would do a little research on. I get that the point was "REALLY HOT ATTACK" but in actuality magma's temperature range is 700C - 1300C (it can't go higher than this). Fire ranges from 200C - 5000C. Weak magma is hotter than weak fire, but strong magma is weaker than strong fire. I'd also argue that being plasma is better than being melted rock.

The comparison to the mera mera was merely that his manipulation could do attacks similar to what we've witnessed of Sabo and Ace. Nothing more.

I have made it well known that I hate the YC[1,2,3, .. N] ranking system, as it's rooted in non-sense, fan-fiction, and often used as method of trying to prove their favorite character is more powerful than someone else's favorite character. The system is flawed in a few key ways:
Well written post.

In general appreciate your thoughts.

But this isn't true at all.

YC1, 2 and 3 have solid basis, and as far as I know it is based on beast pirates commander hierarchy.
This is a decent way for characterizing PLs, especially true when it comes to beast pirates, which have a strict hierarchy based on power

This in general works with BM pirates as well.

The Yonko crew where this means of division falls apart, is when it comes to Whitebeard Pirates. Because Oda has stated that the commander positions aren't based on powers or something, and all commanders are essentially equal in status.
Still, Marco, who was 1st division commander, ended up being the strongest commander. Weird lol

Also, did I miss anything, or does King have conqueror's haki?

He doesn't, as far as I know

I think it'd be best to shave this thread down to just the Commanders and give the Admirals their own thread (if they don't already have one.) Any potential comparisons when it comes to abilities can be taken to the Power Level thread.

When I get some time, I'm going to break down King and Queen's real potential and why I think Zoro and Sanji were lucky they were the protagonists.

Listing characters would suggest one is stronger than the other….With One Piece that can only be done with so many characters as the difference in strength is minuscule. Tiers suggest characters share similar stats and have higher or lower stats that don’t fit into tiers above or higher.

Fans have simply used the fiction of the manga, The titles/Position given to characters within the story. To rate & rank them. Kaido calls them his All Stars, Big Mom’s Sweet Commanders, WB Division Commanders….All of their top troops are not equal and there is a power hierarchy within these crews, 1st Mate, 2nd & so forth….

It’s not fan made lol. When we address other characters as commander lv, it makes sense because there is no other title or position that signifies such strength.

Using ranks makes even less sense than using bounty.

Just some feats and tidbits of information on Marco that should be considered as well:

-He was exhausted, as noted by Perospero, after helping with the Ice Oni virus and he still held back King & Queen effectively for the most part
-He damaged defense mode King with a knee strike (with ambiguous haki application) and made him bleed

And if we're considering Databook entries:
-He fought equally with the admirals (controversial take, ik) according to Databook: Blue Deep:

"il a affronté d'égal à égal les amiraux de la Marine"

I think it was also Prometheus that was injured by him, not Napoleon, and this was I guess because of his whole 'magic fire' vs. 'regular fire thing.' And for this reason, I would also say that he would be a horrible matchup for Ace in terms of DF ability if he can in fact override 'regular' fire.

Didn't really mention swordsmen in general, but Zoro alone. I think a quick fighter (and after seeing Zoro successfully hit King when King was in "high speed mode" I think it's safe to say Queen wouldn't be avoiding shit that Zoro throws at him) with high attack power would be Queen's ultimate weakness, actually. I can't really see Queen taking Asura on.

Also, I think most of the science stuff unique to Queen were his fucked up viruses.

You might hate the Yc1 , Yc 2 etc system but the conclusion leading up to it is pretty implicit. Here it is :-

Yonkos are roughly the same strength & balance each out other out. Whether it is the yonko captain balancing out other yonko captain (as has been repeatedly shown via sky splits) or the rest of the crew which means the no.2 , no.3 , no.4 of the yonko crews, they must balance each other out as well to keep the yonko crews roughly the same level in strength.

So even if its not explicitly stated in the manga still it is implicit that Yonko captains, crew no.2 (yc1) , crew no.3 (Yc2) etc must balance each other & be roughly the same strength , therefore the terms Yc1 , Yc2 to refer to those levels.

Weird lol
I still disagree on that. I haven't seen a lot of consistency in YC levels at all.

It's by Oda's own doing. If Jozu can be stopped by Doflamingo, who can be taken out by Luffy, who struggles against Cracker.. It's like a snake eating itself trying to explain the power levels. We've been shown that Doflamingo's strings can be dealt with by strong enough fighters (Fuji in the anime, Luffy in both manga and anime), but Diamond Jozu was unable to move once stopped by Doflamingo.

There's way too little info to create any kind of meaningful ranking. Not to mention we have next to zero information about the levels of Shanks' crew other than knowing they're incredibly strong. With Blackbeard his crew has grown into fleets similar to Whitebeard. Trying to put them into buckets just doesn't work.

Burgess (an OG Titanic Captain of BB) - low-diffed by Sabo. Is Sabo a Yonko-level, or is Burgess bottom-tier? Also was "no match" for Ace. This shows that Yonko Commanders CAN be beaten quickly, in the fashion that King and Queen kind of were.

Jozu was both frozen by Aokiji (an attack Doflamingo shook off) and stopped by Doflamingo (an attack Fujitora prevented easily, and Luffy broke out of with relative difficulty before his fight against Cracker).

Basically we have some info on:
  • WB Commanders:
    • Marco
    • Jozu
    • Vista (sparred with Hawkeye)
    • Izo (arguably we don't know a lot about him in 1v1 situations)
    • Ace
  • Blackbeard Commanders:
    • Burgess
  • Big Mom Commanders:
    • Katakuri
    • Cracker
  • Shanks Commanders:
  • Kaido Commanders:
    • Jack
    • Queen
    • King

That's 11/35 = 31% of commanders that we have info on (in 1v1)

Of that 31%, the fights we know of:

Fought King: Zoro, Marco
Fought Queen: Sanji, Marco
Fought Jack: Inu, Neko, Ashura
Fought Katakuri: Luffy, Ichiji
Fought Cracker: Nami / Luffy
Fought Burgess: Sabo / Ace
Fought Vista: Hawkeye
Fought Jozu: Aokiji (random other skirmishes)
Fought Marco: King, Queen, Kizaru, Akainu, Blackbeard
Fought Izo: Pacifista, Kaido (9v1)
Fought Ace: Blackbeard, Burgess, Whitebeard, Akainu, Aokiji

The only useful overlap that can serve as a comparison of any kind are that King and Queen fought Marco, who fought Kizaru.
Burgess got low-diffed to a point that he's hard to rank. We know Sabo is very strong as he took on Fujitora, and AFAIK is the only person to get through the bari bari no mi (*though may have been a joke).
Most of the data from Ace is useless, as he died two years prior.
Jack's only useful overlap is that he fought Neko, who took out Perospero. This was Sulong'd though, so it makes the comparison much more difficult.
All the WCI data is relative to pre-Ryuo / ACOC Luffy and not super useful. We don't really have a good idea of how Zoro and Sanji compare to the Luffy of now, or that time.

The only thing I can really establish is that some commanders could potentially hold their own against Yonko (Marco, King, Ace*, probably Katakuri).
Many would be low-diffed by Yonko (Burgess, Izo, Queen, Jack).
Most have no information at all about where they stand in any kind of ranking, and a ranking that excludes 69% due to lack of any data whatsoever is meaningless enough. When you cake on the lack of relative data for which to compare the rest, making any kind of ranking gets silly.

In real life terms what Yonko commander ratings are trying to do is as though you were issuing a standardized test that's graded on a bell curve. Instead of aggregating all results and forming the "curve", you are required to place each student on their own bell curve based on their own score, with a maximum of being relative to the score of 1-2 others. You'd basically just end up with 1-2 students "ahead of the curve" and literally everyone else in the 50 percentile, due to a lack of relevant data.

Also, did I miss anything, or does King have conqueror's haki?

He doesn't, as far as I know
Don't think he does.

Don't think he does.
Doflamingo caught Jozu off guard.

The thing is, once you get caught in Doflamingo's strings and are unable to change their body, there are very few people in the verse than can break free from his strings.
The reason Luffy could break free was because he can expand his body while being coated in armament. In a way, Luffy's rubbery armament was a hard counter to Doflamingo, it was heavily hinted at that in the arc

Doflamingo could break free from Aokiji's ice, because he used conqueror's haki IMO.
A basic function of conqueror's haki is pressure.

I agree however that it comes down to matchups.
Jozu would comfortably beat G4 Luffy in Dresrossa/beginning of Wano arc (one of the hardest bodies in the series, plus high in strength and speed). The same Luffy could beat Doflamingo. But Jozu vs Doflamingo would be tricky, because if he gets caught in the strings, it's over for him.

I've always been of the position that "stats" don't fully decide a fight, though it does matter to an extend.
Matchups/DFs matter a lot as well.

The YC1, YC2, YC3 are more of a placement about where you think characters perform "generally" speaking.
The commander system itself, is based on beast pirates hierarchy as far as I understand. And beast pirates value power and hierarchy a lot

In general, I think we can all agree that Marco, King and Katakuri are the strongest amongst all the commanders who have feats, and operate at a very high level?
At best, someone could make the case that, say Ace and Vista (who each about equally fought casual Yonko level characters in WB and Mihawk) should be close enough to be in same tier as them. But again, I haven't seen anyone arguing that they are stronger, but just that they are close enough to be in same tier. The 3 right hand men are on top of every other commanders in every list from anyone I have seen.
It gives credence to the idea about "YC1" - they are very special, even amongst the strong commander level characters.

I can agree on Marco / King / Katakuri, and hell even probably throw Beckman / Shiryu in there with zero data. My divergence is that going further down the pipe and trying to classify every YC is a futile effort akin to fitting isolated data points onto a bell curve and make it work.

IMO people read too much into doflamingo stopping jozu at marineford. It's a lone event in which doflamingo snuck up on him....

I disagree, but I can see where you're coming from.

Because the 2nd in commands seem to be so superior and special to the rest, that we can easily see that they belong in their own tier.
But for others, they have their own strengths, but the gaps aren't quite as noticeable.

I assume that is your point?

If yes, I can understand where you're coming from

More or less how I felt about this.

I mentioned in my original post that "good match ups" are good in that they favor the YC I was talking about, and included "low diff" fights up to "high diff" as a "good match up". From this perspective, I put Vergo as he's a brute-force haki user who would struggle against Cracker.

Agreed, the magma fire thing makes no sense whatsoever if looked at from the heat angle. Maybe if it was about magma drowning out fire but that's not the framing oda presented. Still, within OP's internal logic we should assume that magma > fire when presented with the comparisons. So king's fire being more like magma should be taken to mean that in general it is greater than regular fire.

Didn't really mention swordsmen in general, but Zoro alone. I think a quick fighter (and after seeing Zoro successfully hit King when King was in "high speed mode" I think it's safe to say Queen wouldn't be avoiding shit that Zoro throws at him) with high attack power would be Queen's ultimate weakness, actually. he YC1-2-3 thing is just used by fans for the sake of convenience. True, it's not a manga term but it's fairly clear that yonko crews have a pecking order. I would argue the opposite, oda in general makes a point of throwing ranks and a pecking order into the story, though it varies by arc and enemy and it is done implicitly and explicitly. Seems like a weird thing to take issue with.

I am not of the idea that bounties across crews tell us much of anything regarding characters or how they compare to one another. To me it'd be a hard sell that the tobiropo would be stronger than their analogues in BM's crew at least (nowadays perospero, snack, compotte, daifuku, oven at least). Barring joke bounties these should be used to get a rough idea of what is going on within the same crew. Imagine comparing pre time skip luffy to oven because their bounties were the same....

I could see vergo as a headliner within a yonko crew but no higher. Out of doflamingo's officers the only one that seems good enough for a position above headliner is pika IMO. Because his ability is BS. I am not a fan of oda gave robin and franky feats as big as BM and sasaki with no meaningful victories on the way there but I would argue that even the tobiropo should be higher in the pecking order than most of doflamingo's crew. I suppose we just kinda have to accept that robin could just strangle vergo and that franky's shogun robot punches at least close to the yonko executive level (I still think kaido's non calamity executives were subpar).

Quick with high attack power is just a strong fighter lol. I definitely think zoro would beat queen in a fight though I don't think zoro is something like a weakness to queen or his style is particularly troublesome for him. The series applies a bit of rock-paper-scissor to devil fruits but when it comes to martial arts and fighting styles and such it generally presents them as not holding any inherent advantages over one another.

Sort of. Mostly just that the data isn't there to form any kind of correlation in strength for the "next strongest" of each Yonko Crew.

I can agree that Marco / King / Katakuri would all probably have a fairly high-diff'd fight against one another, and probably be capable of holding off or surviving an encounter against a Yonko, and in some cases it'd be undetermined who'd win if an Admiral was in play (since we know very little about Fujitora or Ryokugyu's strength, just that it's vast).

I can't honestly say how say, Smoothie vs. Cracker would go down. I have no idea how Jack would fare against Lucky Rou or Yasopp. I can't say that Catarina Devon would take out Smoothie with ease, or that they'd high-diff.

There's also the fact that with someone like Marco we know he's extremely powerful, but we haven't really seen him in a non-supportive way. In the Great War he was too distracted to accomplish any solid win against a strong opponent, but we DID see him go blow to blow with Akainu, spar with Kizaru and take a nasty hit from Garp. We saw him clash with Big Mom but simultaneously be worried about Perospero's arrows. The confusing thing is that Jack is NOT on par with King, and Jack was defeated by Inurashi while Perospero was defeated by Nekomamushi (where I'm assuming we can probably agree the cat and dog are equals for the most part). So, characters like Marco do feel threatened by characters like Perospero, but are clearly stronger. Makes it way more ambiguous for me, and Perospero is one of those where while he's not a YC, I wouldn't know how the heck to rank him because he's clearly strong enough to toy with Pedro, fend off Sulong'd Minks, and be a serious threat.

Yeah the reason I use Vergo is he's a good physical fighter wall. He likely isn't a YC level and I don't think I claim he is, but he's definitely a good barrier of entry for that. I'd argue he's stronger than the Tobiroppo, but weaker than Jack.

"Quick with high attack power" is just my way of saying no bullshit involved in the fight. King is "quick with high attack power" but he has a quirk you need to figure out to effectively handle him. Cracker is quick with moderate attack power, but definitely quirky AF and figuring out where his real body is is key. I actually think Zoro would have been more well suited against Cracker in a 1v1 situation than Luffy was, because Zoro kinda had the similar experience in his dealing with Pica.

Out of all the Yonkou commanders, only Katakuri has impressed me immensely, but mainly because of his Future Sight. Hurting him would be difficult without AOE, speed, or Future Sight.

I consider admirals above every Yonko commander 1 we have solid data on.

Marco would be the closest to an admiral, I think he can push at least Kizaru to a high-extreme diff.

King can push them to a mid-high diff due to his defence mode and generally good stats.

All Admirals we know of, have great AOE, which counters future sight + mochi body. So I think Katakuri goes down mid diff

I can't honestly say how say, Smoothie vs. Cracker would go down. I have no idea how Jack would fare against Lucky Rou or Yasopp. I can't say that Catarina Devon would take out Smoothie with ease, or that they'd high-diff.
I completely get what you're saying here.

For YC1s, they are clear superiors in stats, and have something that seem "broken" on top of their superior stats,.
Like future sight for Katakuri, broken durability for Marco, insane defence for King.

But we don't know how things would turn out between other commanders.

Queen is portrayed as a clear superior to Jack by Oda, and I will respect what Oda has portrayed.
But Jack honestly feels like a superior fighter. He has good CQC (can fight forever against Cat/Dog who are speedy and good in CQC), has great stamina and durability
While Queen wasn't able to defend against a single attack, and relies on his tech, brute strength and dinosaur durability to carry him.

In this sense, we can't just look at the other commanders, and say with confidence that one is superior to another. It isn't "obvious", unless Oda outright portrays otherwise (like with Queen/Jack, Smoothie/Cracker)

The Jozu vs Vista debate also supports your point. People have varying opinions about Jozu vs Vista.
Jozu is commander 3 and Vista commander 5, but Vista IMO is looking a lot better with his feats. He fought equally with casual Mihawk, and earned his respect.

But again, Oda has stated that Whitebeard has no real hierarchy in his commanders, and all 16 commanders have equal status. Also why Oda, WB's 2nd in command, was commander of 2nd division.
Maybe WB crew is the exception here, and the YC1, YC2. YC3 are the norm? We won't know for sure, let's see if the hierarchy exists within Shanks' crew as well (we'll likely see him next arc)

Regarding Marco:
Well, in the great war, he fought against all 3 admirals at different times.

He fought Kizaru equally for almost the entirety of the war. Had enough attack power to match Akainu's attack (long enough for Jinbe to pick up and escape with Luffy)
I don't think these are support feats (I assume you mean stalling/healing type with this?).
One is an overall combat feat (against Kizaru). While the other is a pure attack power feat (against Akainu),

Regarding his "worried face" at Perospero's attack. Honestly not sure what to make of it. I can't imagine him getting injured by Perospero after we saw him tanking attacks from Yonko tiers and admiral tiers.
I suppose it would just hurt him, inspite of him being able to heal? It isn't like he won't feel pain from those attacks, maybe he was just worried about the pain, idk

Regarding Perospero:
Yea, we can agree Cat ~ Dog

Perospero honestly has the same aura as a Yonko commander would have. In both power and persona. But, Jack would be Perospero's clear superior. Jack fought against a bunch of stronger Minks in their Sulong form, solo'd them all. He was defeated then by Sulong Cat and Dog, before they fought Kaido.

It was injured Jack who seemingly extreme diff'd an injured Dog

Perospero fought just two weaker Sulong Minks, and was relatively fresh when he fought against an injured Cat

If you ask me where Perospero would fit in. I say, stronger than all Tobiroppo (except X Drake, depending on if you consider him a Tobiroppo anymore). But weaker than Jack.

Yeah the reason I use Vergo is he's a good physical fighter wall. He likely isn't a YC level and I don't think I claim he is, but he's definitely a good barrier of entry for that. I'd argue he's stronger than the Tobiroppo, but weaker than Jack.
I don't think Vergo is stronger than Who's Who and Ulti

If he was in Beast Pirates, he would fit well within Tobiroppo IMO, somewhere in the middle.

I think Vergo could cut it as a Tobiroppo. Not the strongest among them by any means, but around somewhere in the middle

I completely agree on your take on Frany and Robin getting Ws on the Tobiroppo. Seems like complete BS to me man, that Robin and Franky improved so much with no explanation.
But then again, this arc is in no shortage of wacky powerscaling.

Queen relies on his durability to tank attacks, and wasn't shown to defend or counter them.

Zoro has good speed, great CQC and high attack power. Zoro would smack Queen without much trouble. Even before getting advanced conqueror's

Queen fare well against characters with low attack power and/or slow brawlers

So... who do you regard as the middle among the topo robi? By all appearances the least interesting tobiroppo was page one... And even he recovered almost instantly from attacks from raid suit sanji and later on from onigashima luffy. Vergo had an edge over sanji but if you factor in that vergo obviously can't have grown since then and that sanji just in general probably just hit a lot harder in wano (in spite the utter lack of development and whatever character driven nonsense which oda failed to sell with sanji's cake) the power scaling simply does not favor vergo. Add to that the headliners actually being problematic enemies even for luffy and zoro during the initial stages of the raid.

I suppose with franky you could argue the shogun thing was always that good... But that leaves the question of why it wasn't more of a thing before. Franky would have bulldozed through a substantial part of doflamingo's crew if he had the damn thing available.

Queen did show he could defend from sanji's attacks though. He didn't just take an endless beating from sanji. Sanji was definitely faster than queen but even in spite of that he managed to land plenty of attacks. That said, it is true that queen was at least partially gag driven, unlike king.
